    This series regarding the silver on copper sludge/ residue reminds me very much of a few deplating runs I did on silver plated on copper flatware and trays MANY years ago where I used Sodium Thiosulphate as the electrolyte in a silver deplating cell. I treated the solution after decanting from sludge if memory serves me right after it was "saturated" with HCL and then refined the silver chloride the same as you... either that or I may have treated a sample of the residue with nitric and then was able to get some (extremely small amount) silver from it.
    what I mean is that the silver would deplate quite easy in this cell but a real mucky looking sludge would form. used distilled water, a piece of stainless on a terminal and then the silver plated on the other. very much like you using your gold deplating cell but instead of using lead using stainless and also using a 5 gal. aquarium as the vessel
    It reacted again if memory serves me right in a very very similar way after putting in under a torch but for some reason I was thinking then and am still thinking now that it might have contained additional silver. at the time I didnt go any further with the testing or experimenting but was hypothesizing that an oxide of silver might be in the residue either I or III. I was going to see about reducing the residue in a crucible with a sacrificial piece of iron, or possible treat it with nitric (if I didn't already do that... again this was many years ago), or some other method but one thing lead to another and here I am a number of years later still wondering. might be something to look into as if there was anyone who could work it out I'm sure you would be!

    • @CoinSilver800
      @CoinSilver800 3 года назад +1

      the reason behind my not going much further with this at the time was the price of silver and the availability and cost of nitric for me

    Good stuff, Sr. Chief! This is starting to get me inspired to set up the home lab I've wanted for a while (BS Chem). I'll probably never use the sulfuric acid method, with the troubles and time seen here, especially since creating nitric acid is rather easy with potassium nitrate stump remover (see Doug's Lab video for a fantastic tutorial... you likely have all the glassware except the water jacket condenser to make your own at home).
    I'm concentrating lately on getting my reloading bench set up first, though. 👍😎

    • @BattleChemist
      @BattleChemist 3 года назад

      @@sreetips No doubt, No question! While getting my chem degree, I was doing an experiment with hot sulfuric acid and made a mistake (used manganese sulfate instead of magnesium sulfate) which meant the color change didn't happen, so I kept heating and it started to boil... unfortunately I was in the half of the Quantitative Analysis classroom that didn't have a fume hood above my bench and it started quickly filling the air with sulfuric acid vapor and causing coughing from me and the TA's. I had to hold my breath as I grabbed it and ran it to the fume hood about 30 feet away to cool down.
      Having worked with "the hard stuff" as far as deadly chemicals in hoods, I'm not only aware, but happy to see you repeat the need for a good hood.
      As you've mentioned recently, a larger hood will really improve the ergonomics and safety of your home lab with the large glassware you're working with. I think overbuilding a hood is probably one of those items in the "buy once, cry once" list, hehe.
      Keep up the fantastic work, good sir! Would love to buy you a drink of your choice someday if I have the chance.

    Great video series. Seems like what you save in Nitric Acid, you lose in time and leftover waste disposal. If you are out of Nitric, or can't get your hands on any, It will get the job done.

    • @macoppy6571
      @macoppy6571 3 года назад

      It would be valuable to calculate the time, materials, and waste processing cost difference of the Sulfuric Acid refining process versus the Nitric Acid process, including in-house distillation of the Nitric Acid. It might reveal that in-house distillation of Nitric is cost effective, when it cannot be sourced in the market.

  • @bluegreenash

    makes me think that dissolving and cementing out the silver is a much easier process as the chemical transformation seem much more time intensive than just pouring it into a bucket and letting the copper plates do the work.
    what do you do with the copper you recover from cementing out on Iron? do you re-use as sacrificial material for the silver cementing?

    So i have a question I had some silver shot leftover in my anode basket i went to re-melt it with another batch of impure cement for a run thru my cell but when i melted the shot from anode basket it would not fully melt do you have any idea what could cause this sreetips?

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  3 года назад +1

      I’ve not tried what you described here. The left over shot will be in the slimes in the anode filter. These slimes are probably impeding the melt. I redissolve the left over silver in nitric. Then separate the palladium with DMG.

    • @sreetips
      @sreetips  3 года назад +1

      If there is palladium in those slimes (high probability) and you remelt that with the silver then the palladium will tend to build up in your cell. Best to remove the palladium. If concentrations of palladium are allowed to get too high then it could start to plate out with the silver in the silver cell and contaminate your pure silver crystal. Contaminated silver is not the problem here. The problem is palladium is worth one hundred times more than the silver!

      @sreetips I thought i had sent you an email before, but i can't find it (to easily send the message about the tokens) ... Plan is... My organization i am a part of (one of the leaders), we are going to make an NFT and are considering a limited run of a physical token, made of high grade silver, and I have asked that we consider acquiring our silver from you, specifically some of that über-high grade stuff.... So, i guess if you're interested, let me know and i can maybe post a comment (for a short time) with my email (so we can discuss this further). Tons of love to you and Mrs. Sreetips. 💛

      Jason, I’ve got some double refined silver coming up in this current batch from my latest video. I sell it on my eBay store. Thank you.

      seems like that wouldn't be worth the value of the chemicals.

      It’s not worth the danger of handling boiling sulfuric acid

      Ok I figured as much I thought it would look cool seeing how it's thin..it would dissolve quickly I wondered if you could make aluminum crystals in a cell like you make in silver videos but I'm still a fan and I'm not missing a video. 8)

    So after only about two weeks time and $20 for acids/chemical then some gas for the melt you've got yourself a couple oz of silver worth $60-$70. Silver is way too cheap right now

      Agree - don’t sell any cheap silver!

    Every time you rinse something in the sink, I fear it will slip down the drain😖. How about a stainless steel sink drain screen for piece of mind? Only 1$ at the Dollar store.

    My question is why put .999 fine silver bars through the silver cell? You've a fine silver. Just a question and I'm curious.

      He kind of explained this in a prior video a while back... he sells his silver in crystal form because there's no question on the part of the buyer whether it's at *least* three nines fine; with a bar, there could be 1% copper in there and no one would know the difference until it was tested for purity.
      Same reason he doesn't leave his sterling in sterling form, even though it will rise with the price of silver... by refining, he *knows* it was sterling and not fake sterling and can sell the pure silver later.

      I don't think that ended up as pure as the runs done with nitric so he was making sure.
      Messy process that has many opportunities for impurities to carry over.

      While that silver from the wire was probably very close to three nines, the only way to be sure is to run it through the silver cell.
