  • In this episode we look at the classic Yamaha DX7 MK1 from 1983, a synthesizer that introduced FM Synthesis in its algorhythmic form and has created confusion and stress for some synth users. This is not an FM synthesis tutorial but this is just an alternative insight into music composition and production! :)

Great video of the DX7 and I find this video very inspiring. I believe the DX7 has set a standard others still follow.

Is there a particular reason why you record the synth´s audio into Audacity and then move it to FL intead of recording it directly into the DAW? I also use FL so maybe it comes handy.

Hi, this was actually recorded while I was still using an old 2-channel audio interface and didn't understand how ASIO worked so I just used the FL Studio ASIO so I could hear what I was doing. However I now use a 4-channel audio interface and its own ASIO (and understand ASIO better now) so it's recorded directly into FL without issues. I hope that's answered your question!

So switching from poly back to mono makes it a "lead". Yeah right.

Any synth can make a complete song with overdubbing. The question is why? Are you poor, and only have the money for one synth and refuse to use software synths? You are a rare FM programmer on the DX. I bought the Yamaha Reface DX to learn FM sound design. 4op but with feedback to have saw/square/sine waves without using up modifiers. Fewer algorithms, but a better interface for sound design. Was thinking about a Korg FM synth but discontinued now. I don't know if FM is worth my time? I have spent the last 5 years with it and not getting any great sound out of it yet.

Have you ever watched the series of FM Synth tutorials with the DX7 from a RUclipsr called madFame?

No. I watched the series by stochastic design: ruclips.net/p/PL_w4Ti4gfAw69woWPVixIQf3CZSoHyEuW . I will try yours too, thank you!@@electronicsoundfactory8528
