Hunter Or Prey - Freediving Azores with Hammerhead Sharks, Mobulas, Baitballs, Bluesharks

- This is an homage to immersive freediving, filmed during 4 days on the ocean of Faial in The Azores, Portugal. A very special place for us as it is not easy to make it your own. It takes time and experience to be able to find the right place at the right time to witness such diversity. We are grateful to be allowed to follow Fred Buyle, one of the world most experienced freedivers into his backyard. We discovered once more that freediving in the open ocean with Blue Sharks, Mobula Rays and Hammerhead Sharks requires a good sense for your own body, as well as a lot of knowledge about the animals. Around bait balls the behaviour of the Sharks is much more direct as they interpret your presence as a competition for food. You can feel like the hunter and the prey from one moment to the other. A humbling experience which we are happy to share in the form of this video.

Narration:
To everyone who is in quest of the oceanic experience, the supreme kick. It’s incredibly important to get our mind clear of thoughts, and a direct view of the world. So when you allow thinking to stop, and you find you are in an eternal here and now. And most of us if we got into this state of consciousness might feel extremely frightened, because we are used to the idea, that nature consist of controllers and controllees, things that do and things that are done too. Who’s in charge? You must simply listen to it and obverse its beautiful patterns, go into its complexity. The great experience. You get butterflies in the stomach and all kinds of things.

I guess manta rays are at the Princess Alice banks - 3 hours from Faial on a Zodiac-class boat, Blue sharks - 90 minutes. Where did you film the Hammerheads? I know there is a colony by Capelinhos...

Bait also changes the behaviour of preditors in that they associate divers with food. That changes the manner in which these animals approach divers. This leads to accidents and attacks. Because of that this practice is considert as irresponsible among divers. It makes this video the result of a questionable practice...
