- The Sculptor's Funeral host Jason Arkles gives a brief description of the statues on the facade of Orsanmichele in Florence. This video is a companion to episode 41 of The Sculptor's Funeral Podcast.
I remember having severe culture shock walking down this street for the first time, absolutely chilling and life changing
This is excellent. I wish I'd spent more time with these sculptures when I was studying in Firenze.
Enjoyed your comment about drunken American tourists.
This is the only Orsanmichele Pronunciation video I could find. 🙂
❤️😊
❤❤❤ I remember you introducing me to this building! I love the story of St George and learning how this fit into it’s time history from you was so awesome!
Hey Lou! Long time! Hope you are doing great.
Nice video, Jason. Thanks for posting it! I don't suppose you were able to go inside rhe church, and if so, did they have much sculpture inside as well? I'm glad these pieces outside survived the War.
Thanks! The church on the inside is really interesting too - there are remnants from the time is served as a grain market as well as the utterly fantastic tabernacle by Andrea Orcagna, probably the most spectacular example of late Italian Gothic architecture in Florence. And actually, ALL the culptures on the outside of the church are copies! The originals have been moved inside and to the first (or second, if you are American) floor of the church, which is the museum. Which is great, because the statures are pretty much at floor level, and the statues are visible all the way around, out of their niches. Really interesting to see how much or how little each sculptor finished them in the back.
Do you happen to know what direction the corner that has both the St John's on it is? Northeast by chance?
Southeast.
