  • After three days in a smelly blind under the hot Florida sun we managed to capture the first footage of a Mexican spiny-tailed Iguana feeding on a Key deer carcass. These non-native lizards are thought to be herbivorous species, so this is a pretty interesting behavior. Note how the Turkey vultures react, they are quite scared of the animal but as soon as the iguana leaves they finish the carcass quickly.

In an area previously occupied by numerous Iguanas, a flock of 40 buzzards have started roosting. Near my Condo's pool area, is a cannel and buzzards have suddenly appeared and decided to stay. They are ugly and wondered what they are attracted to. Suddenly remembered, we used to have a lot of Iguanas in same area that are now gone. Do Buzzards attack & eat Iguanas?

no, they don't attack and kill much of anything, but they will find and eat the eggs of the iguanas which takes a big toll on their population!
while the vultures may seem ugly to you they are actually crucial to the environment in many ways and are great to have around. they may seem gross but vultures = cleanliness! they are excellent at preventing the spread of disease. in areas that are meant to have vultures but the vultures are dying out, like in many places in India, there are massive outbreaks of things like rabies and other health issues spread by the feral dogs that take over eating dead animals in the absence of vultures.
in florida you are going to see black vultures and turkey vultures, both are good to have around. i would guess you are seeing more black vultures because they are more common in florida and they are more likely to be digging up eggs and eating them but it's perfectly plausible that you see both species 😊 the vultures that live near you will not make you sick, attack you or your pets, or so anything like that. they're just hanging out and enjoying the food.
