Pictures taken at 12800 ISO are very grainy, but it does allow you to shot portraits with a single candle as the light source. At 6400 ISO, the image quality is much better and you can still shoot in very low light. I had an EOS 350D before this one and the 500D blows it away in sensitivity. Also, the flash is actually usable on the 500D.
@Bestofshooter88 You're right, it is a photo camera, but the film quality is fine. Shooting video is a bit awkward because of the form factor, but you'll have that problem with the 5D2 and 7D as well.
@OktoberFilms the 60D? awesome... that's the camera ive been looking at now actually... i think i'm going to get it in the next few weeks. i'll stay tuned to your channel and look for the test footage :D
The T1i CAN focus when taking videos - you just have to enable it via a live view function. It's slow, and the noise of focusing does get recorded so you'll hear it during playback - but it does have the ability to focus during movies.
No, that is incorrect. You can film up to 4GB. That is closer to 10 minutes, if I remember correctly (depending on resolution). I have never hit that limit, so I'm not sure.
why your video is so sharp and clear ? Is this default lens kit or other lens also, is this on 1080p ? did you use any software for editing... I woud appreciate if you could tell me how to shoot like that in my case exposure light changes ....
What exactly is compression? I'm trying to get into all this photography and cinematography business but I still need to learn a lot. Thanks in advance.
@alexfair8589 I bought a 16GB Kingston Class 4 card with the camera and have never had problems with full buffers, lag or anything else. I read at the time that you needed class 6 for video, but the store didn't have any. Bought what they had, thinking I'd replace it soon, but I still use the original card.
@alexfair8589 Nope, recording in 720p because of the frame rate. The first clips, including this one, were shot in 1080p but I don't see the point in 20fps. Anyways, I'm passing this camera on and getting the 60D in a few days. I'm bound to post some 60D footage here real soon.
@TheTiivik The 500D shoots at 1080p20 and 720p30. That's the options we have. The 550D has more shooting modes and manual controls. Thanks, Canon, for leaving us early adopters out in the cold.
@OktoberFilms well in a strange turn of events ive just bought this camera like 1 hour ago, it really is quite a beatiful bit of kit for my first proper camera im well happy i doubt i will be doing much videos though
@alexfair8589 Maybe both. I shot everything in 1080 to begin with and it does seem a bit jumpy. I'm using 720 now and it looks much more stable. Check the clip I uploaded yesterday to see the difference.
@OktoberFilms i heard the type of SD card you use can affect the frame rate and quality of the final video. Have you or has anybody else experienced this?
This was shot with the kit lens at 720p. I used Final Cut Pro to edit, but used no colour correction. The ISO button freezes the exposure, so you won't have the video changing in brightness.
Compression is when you use data from different frames to compose the file. Guess your best bet is to google video compression. There is a lot of info online.
@times9 It can get pretty bad at 1080p, but I haven't seen any problems when shooting in 720p. Haven't tried the Nikons either, so I can't say which ones are better.
if this is your first, definately get this one. its even got a mode where you can gradually learn how to get used to the camera. look at other reviews of this camera, especially "Canon EOS 500D / Rebel T1i review" by cameralabs. amazing review. and get the lens kit, as you wont be able to take pictures of anything without it. and im also guessing you dont want to pay another £/$500 for the lens too, so just stick with the kit. it works amazing.
@suutari13 Its getting better. It has to, as Vimeo is a real contender. Check the one I uploaded yesterday. Not bad quality at all if you elect the 720 version.
4gb limit per video, 1080p = 12 min, 720p = 18 min. But once the 4gb limit is hit, it will start over with a new file. So: 32gb card, 1080p = 96 min, 720p = 144 min
how can you post this vid ....? i can't ....my vid 2:45 890 mgb (720 HD) but I've lost 12 hours to put this video on youtube and only 50% can you help me,my PC Ram 4gh VGA 512 Mgb
@suutari13 you may check chinese video website, they suck even more ! mostly are 15fps/second, and a video like that 720p, can't be damned like 240p or worse ! can't do with it !
@BigBaggaBlues the Canon rebels are widely known, not only for pictures, but is famous for extraordinary video quality, one of the best VIDEO quality digital slr's. It is widely used by the professional skateboarding community to film, being the most favorite camera for filming, second in line to the dcr vx series.

i just bought this camera yesterday with 18-55mm and 55-200mm objectives, great cam
Well, the picture quality is not that bad! :-)
Nice Dutch scenery!
Which artist is going to be the lucky one to be shot with it!
The Netherlands is a cute country.
Oh, and thanks for the sample video!
really good test! thanks
are you enjoy a quality this video?
for how long can record full hd?
@DJMalkasten It's not crappy by any means. A 1000 dollar lens will leave it in the dust, but the kit lens is perfectly adequate for most uses.
@OktoberFilms oh cool! fantastic! thanks for that :) have you been recording in 1080?
Thanks! Made some nice shots since. Need to find the time to edit and post them.
@Bestofshooter88 You're right, it is a photo camera, but the film quality is fine. Shooting video is a bit awkward because of the form factor, but you'll have that problem with the 5D2 and 7D as well.
@ronneshab Absolutely. Only problem is, you get two of those for a 7D. The 550D looks OK as well.
@thealed29 The 500D shoots at 3öfps in 720p mode, the 60D shoots @ 50 or 60fps, depending on PAL or NTSC.
@OktoberFilms the 60D? awesome... that's the camera ive been looking at now actually... i think i'm going to get it in the next few weeks. i'll stay tuned to your channel and look for the test footage :D
Good video :) what Movie format is it on the computer? Avi?
The T1i CAN focus when taking videos - you just have to enable it via a live view function. It's slow, and the noise of focusing does get recorded so you'll hear it during playback - but it does have the ability to focus during movies.
@TheGrownUpAdult
Exactly. A lot of people don't realize how much RUclips compresses everything. HD video never looks quite right on RUclips.
@FredagsAlle The 18ö200 is very heavy, but if you can handle it, it's a great lens. Very convenient not having to switch lenses.
The next artist.

@OktoberFilms What is the frame rate at 720p, if it's something greater than 20fps I'm no shadow of a doubt gonna be buying one of these things
WOW that is STUNNING! Im most probably getting this camera this summer
What exactly is compression? I'm trying to get into all this photography and cinematography business but I still need to learn a lot. Thanks in advance.

i doubt i will be doing much videos though
How did you upload this video?
My videos shot on 500d don't look as sharp when uploaded.
Thank you.
I'm using FCP and Compressor. I downloaded a youTube HD preset for Compressor some time ago.
@alexfair8589 Maybe both. I shot everything in 1080 to begin with and it does seem a bit jumpy. I'm using 720 now and it looks much more stable. Check the clip I uploaded yesterday to see the difference.
@MBDbxl I'm not sure how long you can film. 720 lets you film longer and it looks a lot more stable. I'm not using 1080 anymore.
@OktoberFilms i heard the type of SD card you use can affect the frame rate and quality of the final video. Have you or has anybody else experienced this?
This was shot with the kit lens at 720p. I used Final Cut Pro to edit, but used no colour correction. The ISO button freezes the exposure, so you won't have the video changing in brightness.
what program have you used to put together all the clips? (:
@FredagsAlle Fungerar den bra? tänkte köpa en

Probably because I shot it in 1080p at 20 frames per second.
HI I have a 500d too (sorry if my english is bad) how can I do to make an auto focus when I make a film?
@nickercrusher not sure at all. I have a 16GB Class 10 card and I can take up to 80 minutes of full HD video.
@chanaez Yes, but it can be tricky. You need to practice before it looks good.
Is it 20fps @ 1080p and 24fps @ 720p? I've seen people telling its 30fps.
does the 500D have image stabilization?
the video quality is pretty good!
@OktoberFilms how much longer exactly?
If youre into filming, EOS 500d, because the d5000 only shoot 24 fps and has no autofocus at all
The kit lens, 18-55IS
@suutari13 Its getting better. It has to, as Vimeo is a real contender. Check the one I uploaded yesterday. Not bad quality at all if you elect the 720 version.
@nickercrusher No, you can film a lot longer than that.
I think this is a very high quality video !
are u using 18-55 lense ?
@BigBaggaBlues I can do whatever I want. I also take a lot of pictures with this camera.
what lens did u use?
can you zoom when you are filming ?
which one better?
nikon d5000 or canon eos 500d?
i need your help
@nickercrusher I think maximum is at approx 30 min
4gb limit per video, 1080p = 12 min, 720p = 18 min. But once the 4gb limit is hit, it will start over with a new file.
So: 32gb card, 1080p = 96 min, 720p = 144 min
@nyalasteve99 Could be. Check the clip I uploaded yesterday. It had 720 and 1080 footage, so you can compare.
@ApplefanXXL shoots in 1080p as well.
awesome man thanks for this, i needed to see how the video was :)
you could not wait any longer?
Good work!
Acceptable quality also in dark situations...
550d or 600d would be better for taking videos. but if your sticking with photos. this is fine. i have this camera.
Is this the 720 or 1080
nice,i bought mine today with the 55mm lense,ill try it soon.......
@LithiumHammer I'd get the 550D instead of this one if you're interested in video. I posted another video last night that shows better what it can do.
@LithiumHammer Yes.
the slow movement of things is because its 20 fps!!??
how can you post this vid ....? i can't ....my vid 2:45 890 mgb (720 HD) but I've lost 12 hours to put this video on youtube and only 50% can you help me,my PC Ram 4gh VGA 512 Mgb
Nope, temptation was stronger than I.
this is pretty good.
can you change the shutter value and time for filming? or is it only auto mode?
So you can just stop the video at 3,9 GB and then start again to avoid the overwriting? Sorry for the bad english ^.^
Köpte min på Expert med 18-200mm objektiv.
why are you filming with this? You should be taking images there anyway
Great video, i maby will bye this camera :)
i think i will buy it! :P
Aww, i have the same cat
how text NAME?
best land ever! =D
LOL only 720p
@OktoberFilms :)
@suutari13 Thanks.
the video is kinda jumpy... is that the camera or my shitty computer?
The fish =)
Beautiful scene only, it makes your video looks like high quality video, but I got same quality in my videos with my digital camera :'D
looks nice i got that camera too =)
@suutari13 yeah try vimeo. com the best
bout 30 minutes
lol! we indians are everywhere :P
@suutari13
you may check chinese video website, they suck even more ! mostly are 15fps/second, and a video like that 720p, can't be damned like 240p or worse ! can't do with it !
youtube quality of video sucks
18-55 IS kit lens its not the best...i wuld say...she is crapy! To enjoy the Kamera you have to Buy other Lens....
