Hey everyone, if you are using a version later than 17.4.12, please adjust the following settings: -Keyframe dissipation on the pyrosolver to 0.7 at frame 1, 0.5 at frame 48 and remove the keyframe at frame 72. -Adjust boundary size on the smoke object to 8x8x12 -Ensure sufficient padding on the gas resize (Padding of 4, and then 2x2x2 on both upper and lower scale or 8 on main padding alternatively). This should remove any issues with clipping and dissipation. The reason that this became an issue is due to a change in 17.4.12 where the following change was made: "A bug has been fixed in the smoke solver that affected simulations with animated timescales, cooling, and temperature diffusion rates. The solver works correctly in those regards now, meaning old simulations to which this change is relevant will produce different results." This resulted in keyframing not working as intended. Hope this helps solve the issues that many of you have encountered. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!
Hi, I'm new to Houdini and doing this tutorial in version 19.0.561. Just wanted to post this for anyone who may have been running into the same Attribute Noise node problem I was having. Since SideFX changed the Attribute Noise node in version 18.5 it was hard to get the same effect Nine Between got, but the closest fix I found after searching was to use an Attribute Adjust node instead of the Attribute Noise. Attribute Adjust allows you to change the Pattern Type to Noise and seems to work how the Attribute Adjust works in the tutorial video
you should go houdini assets--> asset manager --> configuration-->> change asset configuration toolbar drop down to show always. close now for every node property window you will have drop down menu in top part of tab, where you can change the version of that menu.
Kinda deceiving having to go through the whole tutorial to end up using a custom made node made available only to patreons. But to each their own. Thanks for the teachings...
Great tutorial, thank you for this one! One thing I'd like to point is that I ended up downloading v17 because the Attribute Noise node changed significantly and since I am new to Houdini I was not able to replicate the settings on the new nodes. Still it opens fine in v18.5 and renders much faster. So this is well worth working through if you are looking to use this effect in your next project.
I love your tutorials they are really easy to follow and informative! If I may make a small suggestion for future tutorials. If the tutorial involves anything from your Patreon, like this one involved the lightning HDA, could you make that clear at the start of the video. For those of us who aren't pledged to you, it's a really bummer to follow it this far only to realize that we can't complete it and put the lightning in.
Thanks for the feedback, admittedly it is unfair to those who follow until that point. I will ensure that it is stated upfront in future tutorials. My apologies. Thank you for watching!
A really great tutorial! Wouldn't mind hearing some reasoning behind the scaling decisions of the fields though. I mean, if You'd be willing to go into a little more detail on why density, vel, temperature where set one way in SOPs and then imported with different values into DOPs, it would be greatly appreciated. Any specific reason for not setting them up to that size already in SOPs? I see Houdini shelf tools do the same. A great fast paced and informative tutorial anyway! Thank You!
Well, that's a bold statement... I was able to finish it. I just don't have fancy lightning bolts inside the smoke belt. But imho that's a detail compared to the rest of the very valuable information in this tutorial!
Would be cool to do the disintegration effect from Avengers: Infinity War on a actual live plate, There aren't a lot of Houdini live action tutorials so I think it would be great if you could do one.

anyone not getting the smoke to appear near 24:00? Another odd detail is that the primitive vertice numbers are negative, unlike in his tutorial. Up until clean, it looks the exact same.

Hi I am a noob to houdini which version are you using Free, Indie, Artists, Studios, Education or Houdini engine. Idk which version to get so I'm hoping you tell me which one you have. Thanks
Hey, quick one to clear it up: Houdini apprentice is the free version, it can do everything but renders with a watermark. Houdini Indie is the cheapest option which most people use and you can use it as long as you earn less than 100,000 dollars per year from Houdini. Houdini FX is the same as Indie but it's used if you earn more than the 100k. Houdini core has slightly limited features but is cheaper so studios that don't need everything don't have to pay for Houdini FX. Houdini engine is what's used to get Houdini tools into other software such as Unity or Unreal. I use indie but I do have an fx license. I'd recommend indie to pretty much anyone.
I followed the tutorial pretty much exacly as the video, but the end result is WAY less impressive. The shadows of the smoke are non-existent, the smoke itself has barely any "texture" of smoke, and the colors inside are barely visible, any ideas why this is happening? Using the Apprentice version of Houdini. Edit to say thanks for the tutorial, 50 minutes of pure Houdini knowledge, you rock!

Thank you! I have one question/problem regarding the dopio filecache at 42:00. When I try to scrub the time line after caching it is very slow when I have the cooking brain icon checked on, but fine after I disable it. Did you manage to avoid cooking times in some other way even if the "brain" is on? Thanks!
Hi, the issue may be that you still have your DOP network displayed. If you disable the display flag on everything except the caching node, it should no longer cook the DOP network. You should also make sure that the 'load from disk' option on the file cache node is checked. Hope that helps!
Great tutorial and the effect is awesome! I'd like to know what your pc specifications are, because my pc took a long time in particle sim. Could you provide the CPU, GPU and RAM info for me? That will be a good reference for my pc setup, thx :)
Hi, I followed the tutorial but my portal is very non-smoke like and the particles are coming off as spheres in the render and after the VDB from Particles in the Smoke Doptnet work. I'm on Houdini version 17.5.229. Any tips on making it more smoke like rather than all the tiny spheres shape? :)
I just finished the tutorial and I'm seeing the exact same thing. I spent a lot of time playing with values to try to fix this without any luck. I know the apprentice version of Houdini limits render to 1280x720, does this limit also apply to the viewport? Is this the reason why it looks so ugly compared to the tutorial?
@@TheFlukeism Erm not too sure about the whole rendering limitations, but I'm pretty sure it's because of the amount of particles is too low for a sharp looking enough smoke portal (correct me if I am wrong!). You can try going to your Curve Particle popnet > source first input > birth tab > increase your impulse count to maybe a 100000. It's denser for me now but I will fix the final look in comp.
Increasing the particle amount was one of the first things I tried without much luck in making it look like what I see in the tutorial. I'm also struggling with applying the pyro fireball shader for render, I can't get the fire color ramp to display any color. Let me know if you manage to get a good final render result. This tutorial has been awesome, I have learned a lot and I've probably spent about 15 hours on it now. I would really like to finish it with a nice looking final render but I feel like I'm missing a few key pieces of information.
I managed to get the cloud to look pretty decent. I did this by tweaking settings in the popnet, I think I was getting problems due to the file caches. I had them bypassed and had load to disk turned off but it wasn't until I wiped and made new caches that I saw the good results. Now just to need to figure out what's going on with this fireball shader and why I'm not seeing any color from my temperature.
