  • I arrive at the historical market town of Rugeley. I have heard good things about the town, so it is now time for me to go and investigate for myself. I'll take you along with me for the walk. So get out your walking shoes it is time for a stroll around Rugeley.

It is amazing how big the town has become over the last 20 years. The population has increased by 30% in that time, and 20 years ago it had a quite middle of nowhere feel to it. Now it just feels over crowded. Even from the cut, now it is just lined with new estate after new estate.

Like just about all old English market towns they have grown out of proportion to the original. I lived in Basingstoke for quite a few years and that is a prime example of an explosion of growth during the late 60's onwards. From a quaint market town to a sprawling mess.

Interesting place! I do love your town tours!😊. I enjoy all the brick buildings..something you don't need much here..Not in Nevada anyways!..I remember a the hardware store in the little town of Bonners Ferry Idaho..it smelled like an old Hardware store..it had everything. For everything from cleaning to fishing and hunting to stove pipe and canvas for your paintings and paints for your house or your hobby...marvelous place. 😊
Nice vlog..hope its warming up for you!..😊

Hi Susan. It is quite amazing with all the big box stores similar to places like Menards over here how many small hardware stores there are. Especially in old market towns. The weather after a couple of days of rain seems to be improving

Hi Trev, really interesting channel - I live a stone's throw from the Red Lion pub! One of my friends owns the 'Crumbs' snack store at 17:52.

Superb video showing the real town. Not the usual shabby old churches and statues of people no ones heard of.

Thank you. I am not saying I never show churches and alike, but I have to be walking passed them anyway to include them. I try to show what I see and what I am thinking at the time. I do not plan my walks, so much of it is a surprise to me also.

I’m surprised you never found the Weatherspoons Trevor. Some cheap grub and beers to be had there and worth a visit.

IO did not realise there is a Wetherspoons at Rugely. Mind you I only had one quick pint when I was there.

Interesting as always Trev. Love 'off the cut ' videos. Looks like a nice clean little town, but it has been heavily knocked about by the cursed modernisers by the looks of things. I wonder what the town centre used to look like; damn sight better than it does now I'll bet. All the best mate and thanks for the upload.

I would guess so too, but it is the first time I have visited the town proper. I have passed before but just stopped for grocery shopping and moved on.

I am not sure - but I think that in those days - the land lady at [The Shrew} - would do her face every night in the colors of a peacock ] - it was quite a sight - This was 1968/69

Thanks for the tour, Trev! I dare say that the old indoor market was probably a hopping place when it was new (in the 1970’s? as the decor seems to be of that era - better colours than all the one depressing gray the world is painting everything, these days). Lots of things to buy, services to partake of, and food/drink. Great to understand the town name origin , as well. Happy cruising!

I have passed though Rugeley twice before, but I had never been into the town. I found it quite interesting. I am sure you are correct, it did look very 70's to me also, and to me there is nothing wrong with the 70's, my teen years was during the 70's lol

It use to be so busy back in the day was the place to meet friends, all stalls open, it was thriving! Sad how times change ☹️

Sadly the indoor market has now closed and is currently empty. I don't know what the plans are for it as yet.
