Rose Valland is poorly depicted in this movie as the fiction character of Claire Simon/Cate Blanchett. While the Nazi plundering was being carried out, Rose Valland, art curator, began secretly recording as much as possible of the more than 20,000 pieces of art brought to the Jeu de Paume Museum. Valland kept secret from the Nazi the fact that she understood German. The Nazi never discovered she was actually an art historian and that she could understand German, they banned all the male historian from the Jeu de Paume, but somehow underestimated her. Working with the French Resistance, she saved thousands of works of art. Rose took action in first person (see the movie The Train), she never went to prison for collaborating with the Nazi (as shown in the movie) on the contrary she risked her life daily passing information to the Resistance. She is one of the most decorated women in French history, pity this does not show up in the movie
I live at the city of Siegen and pass this place where all those artefacts where hidden in the last time of the war every day on my way home. The tunnel still exists, but it is closed now.
Art is our history and its not to be stolen nor be destroyed we should protect it. It will be the base of the modern society and people shouldn't destroy the paintings kasi yun yung achievements nila (nung artist) , if the paintings were destroyed it's like they never existed.
The sad fact is, that there are still many works of art in museums all over the world that were never returned to the families of those from whom they were stolen.
Beautiful!! It made me remember all the history of art classes in high school. It is not the same looking at the artists' work and the ordeal behind some of them. Thank you
A movie which is worth watching. In addition, it makes my point that good films need a good cast, a good director, a good story, and someone who will put a hand deep in the pocket. There have been low-budget productions which made wonderful movies in the past, e.g., the Straight Story, but quality generally (also) depends (and always will) on budget size.
Up to today you would not believe how long i have been trying to find the name of this movie, this Brilliantly put together, a fantastic cast, they played there parts so very well, thank you Super Rona for sharing this with us, and thank you RUclips. 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you for uploading this it's one of the better film uploads I've seen here on RUclips. The only complaint I have is the lack of subtitles for the bits spoken in German & French. It would have been nice to have had these included.
@@dodgem259 It's one of the better uploads for RUclips. Considering that it's free its very good - it's in focus. The scenes don't jump about & there's no badly sinched dialogue. So yes it's quite good when you take into account what it is.
It is partially true as there were multiple operations like these during WWII. Also, during the first years of the war in Syria, the was also an art saving operation. The BBC covered the story, look it up.
I confess I wept .. just briefly mind u .. but I wept. How close it was. The gold teeth got me .. hmm, that got to me. We better wake up 2 ourselves … evil doesn’t sleep/just waits. Thank you 4 posting
So rare. if see anywhere, but side-lines....name Rosa Valland::::"Rose Antonia Maria Valland (1 November 1898 - 18 September 1980) was a French art historian, member of the French Resistance, captain in the French military, and one of the most decorated women in French history. She secretly recorded details of the Nazi plundering of National French and private Jewish-owned art from France; and, working with the French Resistance, she saved thousands of works of art.[1] """ /Wikipedia
This movie really does not do good justice to Rose Valland (Cate Blanchett character), she was really an heroine and the rescue of the work of arts was mostly her merit.
The famous, splendid painting The Venus of the Mirror by Velásquez was stolen from Spain by English soldiers during the Independence War against Napoleon. It should be returned to Madrid, where it belongs. Spain should claim for it even through lawsuit before High Courts.
Funny when you know that much of this film was actually shot in the old East German zone, as the only part of Northern Europe that hasn't changed much since WW2. And Mr. Clooney looked very daper in the bar of my local 5 star hotel I seem to remember. As I was restoring a beautiful period listed house not a 100yards from the Hotel !
To the reference of the question weather people who died for those art pieces would be remembered: More than half of the Europe does not remember people who died to liberate it from the fascism.
22:38 Haha. The Translator has a strong accent, but the germans were whispering in actual German. The "German" Moument Man at the other end wasn't a native German speaker either.
I know that it's totally irrelevant and that probably noone else cares but it kinda annoys me that the "Altaussee salt mine" in the movie is not the real one but some other mine...

A fantastic movie...Funny, deep, historic at the same time. Such a great cast!

A very underrated movie.
George really is good director.

This is. One of the best ww2 movie ever made...

The sad fact is, that there are still many works of art in museums all over the world that were never returned to the families of those from whom they were stolen.
The madona scene is the best one of the movie. That one scene is essence of this movie
Thanks a bunch for uploading 🙏🤗🙏

If only 1 quarter of this tale is true, it gives us food for thought on so many levels.
It is partially true as there were multiple operations like these during WWII. Also, during the first years of the war in Syria, the was also an art saving operation. The BBC covered the story, look it up.
We must point out that "The last supper" had already been carefully covered with sandbags and scaffolding before the church was bombed...
Da Vinci's "The Last Supper" was already badly damaged half a century after it was created.

This could have been a good mission for Indiana Jones if they'd made one in the 90s.
