My dog had 2 seizures 5 hours apart just today, I just stayed patted him, tried to be as calm as possible for him put a folded blanket under his head, it was hard to watch, both times were under a minute each under 30 seconds even, he's 17 and hopefully the vet can see him in the morning...

Man, i know that's scary. My 13yr old chow just had a seizure for the 1st time. We all freaked out not knowing what to do. This has never happened before. He's literally had dog bloat requiring surgery & almost died. I was told both times it's extremely rare for his breed to ever even get bloat once let alone twice, especially bcuz of his build. Sofor him as a senior to now get a seizure outta nowhere is heart wrenching. No dog owner wants to see their best friend/ fur baby go thru such a traumatic event. I thoughts & prayers go out to everyone of you & hope your babies are better now.

All my three dogs (Italian Greyhounds) experience seizures. Epilepsy I believe. Is terrible and it brakes my heart. Sometimes I think they can die and is terrifying.
I hold them and talk to them and caress them until is over. It takes some time for them to go back to normal, and then I realise how good is to see them well and happy.
I love them so much. They are wonderful. ❤❤❤

I had a male Vizsla that had seizures starting at six months ,we tried everything,Valium up the nose etc, nothing helped. I have to admit that I think this pup was destined to be mine,I’m an RN and this was boy. Went to the University of Minnesota neuro vets and one suggested ocular (over eye) pressure during my boys clustering seizures,it worked, I have to admit that without my medical skill my dog would have been dead.He lived to 14 !! PS we also gave him ice cream because it helped with the clustering, seizing burns up a lot of glucose. If anybody out there reads this and it is helpful,I’d love to hear of it ,peace out

Hey, what exactly do you meen with over eye pressure? I dont fully understand in. I’m sorry. English isn’t my fist language. Do you mean covering their eyes softly to keep light out? My 12,5 year old pomeranian had her first seizure today and it was heartbreaking. I do hope she can get old with this. After the seizure she was very calm and we cuddled a lot. After 10 minutes she was back to her happy self but was tired. The seizure lasted about 90 seconds. I’d love to know of covering her eyes work and if you have more tips🐾

@@veganreality4844 Just the one episode and he’s back to his normal happy self. The vet said if he has another within 6 months anti seizure medication might be recommended. Otherwise maybe it was something environmental. It’s possible because to my great consternation he constantly and I means constantly is licking, smelling, and nibbling on everything when I take him for a walk.

The 2nd recommendation is B/S you should cradle your dog and prevent them from injuring themselves while not restricting their movements but guiding them instead ❤️ they can easily chip and break teeth if left alone during an episode.

Thank you for breaking it down like you did. My Standard poodle has her 1st one 2 years ago this week. She seems to have about 10 a year. The first 2 she had (4 months apart) were well over 3 minutes. The rest have been about 2-3 min. Comes out of them very euphoric and happy. She just had one Dec 28th, 2022 and it was almost 8 minutes long. I know this because I try and video them in case my vet or anyone needs to see them. She is on 125mg Zonisamide twice a day. Anyway my point is that I very much appreciated your video. Valerie

An Era is over .. but he Rests in Blissful Peace at last.

My dog had her second seizure in 5 months last night. The convulsing itself didn’t last long but the postictal lasted 2 hours. She drooled and trembled and seemed restless and disoriented. It was very upsetting. I called the vet this morning and they didn’t seem to worried about it since she’s fine, acting, eating and pottying like a champ. She’s about 2 and she’s a rescue so we don’t know much about her history, but I feel more equipped and ready to start testing and treatment if this happens again, as they advised me at the vet. They said it’s best to do blood test within an hour of the episode to see which levels are “off”. Last night was terrifying but I’m so happy she’s feeling herself today. And it’s relieving to see everyone’s comments here. Seems to be a common issue 😢

When my Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix had her 1st seizure it was scary I rushed to the vet and they took blood tests but couldn’t find anything suspicious.
The seizures continued intermittently and I just stayed calm and stroked my dog very gently and said it’s ok it’s ok.
The seizures lasted from about 1 minute maybe 3 minutes sometimes.
We had more tests done but did not have a brain scan just blood tests but still found nothing. So I never gave my dog any medication and none was recommended by the vet.
Overtime the frequency of seizures decreased from 1 every 2 months to 1 per year and then they stopped completely.
She lived a long and healthy life.
I was always interested what it was that brought on these seizures I visited a holistic vet who told me it could have been the food I was giving my dog it was a top brand but he suggested a more natural food with less carbohydrates and this might have been the issue.🌷

I think it has something to do with the dog food as well. We have a French Bulldog puppy who is 6 months old and recently started having seizures after we started feeding him Taste of the Wild Grainfree food. Took him to the vet. The blood tests were fine. I stopped feeding him Taste of the wild and seizures stopped.

After testing ruled out other possible causes like liver failure, brain tumor, etc., Keppra was prescribed. My 11 year old dog had two seizures about 4 days apart. She passed after then second seizure. Its a horrible experience for the owner. There is no way to comfort your dog during a seizure.
Of course after the first seizure I was there to comfort her. For about 5 minutes she was disoriented and searching rooms in the house. 10 minutes later she was fine, and told me that she wanted her afternoon meal.
What I find confounding is possible seizures that she had that I did not witness. I could have been running errands or simply in a different room.

Ive read that past head trauma increases the risk of seizures for dogs bij 15.5% but no time indication was given - last year my dog was hit by a car and suffered head trauma, he recovered from a severe concussion. Does this mean that in the future my dog is more likely to suffer seizures when he gets older?

Well it is necessary to record because if any dog have seizures attack more than three minutes it will be dangerous for the dog and doctors are always suggested for recording because it will help them to know which kind and level of impact dog have due to attack and what is the condition of the Dog and to understand the situation and process accordingly so don’t judge anyone without knowing whole situation

    Hello
My dog can't do MRI because of some relationship
The doctor judges whether he is GME or NLE
    Currently actively treating Cytosar 200mg/m²
I want to ask about the treatment probability of GME and NLE
    Thank you

    • @SEVNeurology
      @SEVNeurology  3 года назад +1

I believe your question is “what is the likelihood of successful treatment with cytarabine?” I hope I’m answering your question. Please let me know if not.
For dogs that are diagnosed with GME (eg ‘proven’ with MRI and spinal fluid analysis), about 40% of the time they make an excellent recovery and go back to normal, however most need lifelong treatment. The next 40% respond to treatment, but have relapses at some point, often within the first 6-8 months. 20% do not respond at all.
It’s tough to predict for an individual dog. It’s even tougher when it’s a pet that hasn’t had any testing and that I haven’t examined in person.
I believe we have a video about encephalitis on our website and on our RUclips page.
Please realize this is general information, as I can’t diagnose or treat your pet without examining in person. Best to follow your veterinarian’s advice.
      Best wishes.

Hello. If an underlying cause for a dog’s seizures is discovered, it is imperative to address it as soon as possible.
Epileptic dogs can live long, happy lives, but it’s important to realize that treatment will almost always require lifelong commitment. Anti-seizure medication is used to control the frequency, severity, and duration of episodes. There are a number of options, and your neurologist will talk to you about the best fit for your dog.
You can learn more about seizures in dogs on our website - sevneurology.com/blog/dog-epilepsy-treatment/

For small dogs it may be low blood sugar so you can apply honey to their gums

    • @SEVNeurology
      @SEVNeurology  3 года назад +6

Yes, low blood sugar may be a cause in small dogs or in older dogs. Applying honey to the gums is unlikely to hurt most other causes of seizures and would help IF the cause is low blood sugar. IF it is low blood sugar, the reason for the low blood sugar needs to be found. Heading to the veterinarian for some blood tests and an examination is best for any dog with seizures.

Not that it’s that big of a deal but it’s kinda annoying when you are looking up what to do when your dog has a seizure and this girl immediately starts flapping her lips about irrelevant information. It’s not even my dog but my sisters dog is shaking and she’s holding her upright in her arms and I said “why are you holding her upright”. Kinda just looking for do we leave her on the ground or is it okay to pick them up. Next time start the video with “hi I’m mavy and if you see your dog having a a seizure don’t panic…etc”
