It's point based, not KO. So please spread your hate somewhere else. It's testing speed, distance, and timing, not power. At least Karate works practically, this is not to show what would happen in a real life situation, although I do agree that it should be more combat orientated instead of sport. But that doesn't mean that you should treat people who work hard with disrespect.

try sparring with this rule. I am sure you will not attack and attack but wait for the right time. It is bad being punch at the face with bare knuckles. Go and watch kyukushin if you want to be entertain.

Thanks for everyone's comment - got heated a bit, nothing wrong with that :) Well, not easy to understand what these people are dancing about, the key is: full control of body and mind. Being able to reach the target with full speed and full power without causing any damage to the opponent, that's the essence of traditional karate.
...and sometimes we don't succeed, then it's Dirty Dancing/Blood Sport :)
That's all what it's about, no need to search for more. For fighting fans probably contact sports are more interesting to watch, that's also fine. In UFC normally it's quite obvious, who is the tough guy, huge respect to the winner and the other guy, they both earn it. In traditional karate "life or death", point or knockout is decided by millimeters. And I believe that level of self control also deserves some respect, even if it's a different game :)

@@KaratedoFocusThx for the upload and the explanation too! I want to ask why is there no protection as in other competitions? Cause its Japan only? And is it all styles mixed or based on one style? When I look at the 65th they also hit relatively hard and I thought this was just for Kyokushin like styles?

This is what I like, in a kumite where the opponents are barehanded, no body and and protectors, and barefooted; and the face and body could be punch or kick, no one has the bragadocio to attack and attack. If to be hit with gloved hand is bad surely more bad for one to be hit with bare fist and knuckles. I experienced this kind of sparring but no hit to the face but only to the body and it hurts when got hit with a bare knuckle fist; and sometimes an error punch to the face. It really hurts to be punch with barefist and knuckles at the face.
