I used this in my 29 gal. tank as directed and had my favorite fish get extremely sick and die. when I noticed he was not eating I took action, I did a 75% water change, with stress coat. He was an Oranda Goldfish and was so beautiful. His sides were matalic gold with black accents. He was so friendly. I'm just sick about it. Please don't use this product in your tank.

It doesn't deprive the tank of oxygen to kill the algae, it puts the algae hyperdrive and the algae consumes a lot of oxygen as it burns itself out. I just looked in at my bottle and it's got a boldy highlighted warning that you must ensure you have vigorous aeration to prevent low-oxygen in the tank. I've been using it for years, following the label, and have never injured a fish. Use of any chemical comes with risks and responsibilities. Not API's fault if an aquarists over-doses or doesn't follow instructions on aeration.

Omg thank you. I dosed melafix and most of my fish like to stay on the right side of the tank but for some reason they were avoiding that side. It was kid of cute, they would swim back to the left but realized "nope go back go back". So I assumed it was the melfix but quickly did a water change. Then I came across your video and I'm so grateful that you confirmed it may have be the algea fix. Glad most of your fix are ok

I used LESS than the recommended amount, and it killed all of my fish. I am astounded now that I am doing some light research on the stuff, that it is even still on the market. I now have an empty 55 gallon aquarium and am angry.

Just had this happen a couple days ago in my guppy tank. I tend to dose lightly as well, but this product completely shocked my fish. Almost instantly, they rose to the surface of the water and floated all funny. I immediately did a 75% water change, followed by another 20% water change. All the adults have been slowly recovering but I lost quite a bit of fry. I'm relieved this didn't happen in one of my cichlid tanks.

I'm so sorry you had to experience this. It sounds like you acted quick and did what you could to save the fish. This product is awful and absolutely has no business being sold to the public for use on aquatic life. I have to agree with you, if this happened on one of your cichlid tanks you would have been sick to your stomach for sure 🥺🥺

I have used this product for years and never lost fish or plants. Folks need to understand a couple of things; An algaecide (kills algae) works like an herbicide, but it’s specific to algae, not herbaceous plants. As with anything meant to kill something specific, you MUST FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!! If you have a heavy algae problem and kill it off, the water essentially becomes polluted with dead organisms and oxygen levels drop. It's why you follow directions. Water changes and air are important. Poly[oxyethylene (dimethyliminio) ethylene(dimethyliminio) ethylene dichloride SOUNDS really scary (active ingredient in the product). But so does Dihydrogen monoxide (also known as hydric acid) and has been responsible for injury, death, and property damage all over the world. (otherwise known as water). :) Again, I have been keeping aquariums continuously since the early 1970's, I have used this API product for years, and NEVER lost a fish or plant because it's use. Read the label. Follow the instructions. {{I have no relationship with the API company, nor any retailer that sells API products}} "Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers" Alfred Tennyson

I used less than 1ml in a 16 gallon tank. Within one hour 3 albino cats are laying listlessly on the substrate, one mountain minnow that is always at the top level was stuck or hiding under the substrate, 3 gouramis are ok, sucking from the top a bit more. Most of the bad reviews involve and accidental overdose, mine does not. Warning is real. I don’t know longterm outcome, this just happened tonight.

I’m brand new to the hobby and had a MAJOR algea bloom within the 1st week. Completely ALL my fault, I over fed my fish and over applied the tank chemicals.
I watched this video and 4 or 5 others and started to completely avoid. However what I noticed was that people DIDNT read the instructions properly and lost fish. I do realize that’s not the case in all situations.
For me, I followed the instructions to the letter. I noticed a major clearing within 2hrs. The next day, the difference was like night and day better. My fish are healthy and behavior seems normal.
This product worked VERY WELL for me. I have juvenile M’Buna Cichlids

Thank you for this. I realized my error too late, did a water change, had one of my fish laying on the floor and tried to save her. They all lost color and none had appetites. The biggest of them was on the floor so it made sense with what you said about the size of the fish. It took 4 days, but just came home to find that one gone. The other 3 are thankfully acting normal now and finally having appetites. Im still tore up over the one I lost because I am blaming myself and am truly upset. I added a warning on Amazon where I purchased it. Hoping ppl take heed to our warnings.

I'm happy to hear you were able to act quickly to help reverse and improve the conditions in your tank, sadly this product is so hard on the fish and their internal systems that sometimes it's too late. It sounds like you made out ok with all things considered except for your one fish, I'm so sorry to hear about that, our fish are our pets, we care for them in the same way we do any pet or animal and clearly are upset with the loss. I made this video to bring awareness to this terrible product and others like it on the market. I do feel strongly they should be banned. I'm happy to hear you left a review for others on Amazon. I hope people read the reviews and heed the warnings. This stuff is no joke and is dangerous for aquatic life.

I used this product not knowing the dangers and it’s been weeks and my betta fish is still struggling and can barely swim to get food at the top. He spends all of his time at the bottom not moving. I’m so upset with myself for using this terrible product. I threw it away immediately and will never use any products again. I’ll be happy to see algae in my tank again. And I’m still hopeful my fish will recover. It’s been weeks but he’s still hanging on.

I love the stuff. I had algae bloom and hair algae that got outta control quickly. This stuff cleared my tank in less than an hour. I’ve never seen my water more crystal clear! The hair algae started dying by day 2 and I’m currently on 2nd dose of the “every 3 days” directions. So far, no signs of oxygen deprivation and everything seems stable. Hopefully it stays that way!

here's the thing, I totally recommend this product under very specific conditions, and that is: if you only have a couple of fish that you can transport into a separate container, THEN then use the dosage and leave it in the tank for an hour... then do a water change of about 50% then add your fish back

Thank you for posting this video. I used this product because of algae problem, I’ve done a Manuel cleaning added new rocks replaced all plants and did about a 50% water change to scrub out the entire tank. I then got this product to help prevent from coming back. Immediately after watching this video I pushed my fan up to the top and created heavy waves to prevent suffocation. Fish seem ok my biggest fish is fine but it seems some of my smaller fish did have a negative reaction. All of this was from proper dosage if not slightly under. I will monitor and update thanks for the video.

this product really is misleading and it sounds like in your case even though you used it properly and even underdosed you still had a reaction in my opinion that should tell people everything you need to know about this product. I am so happy to hear that through all of your efforts your fish seem to be doing okay. can I ask how their appetite is that was one of the longer side effects from them bouncing back for me.

It makes sense you'd lose your largest fish; the largest fish in the ocean are cold water, huge oxygen intake fish...same as large body of freshwater/pond fish like Koi and most Monster Fish. I am surprised you got to 6" on your Green Texan at your regular temperature, it is unlikely to reach their in-captivity length of 12" max over 76 degrees or breed at their favorite 72 degrees; and should never kept over 78.. This variant isn't even an American cichlid, btw. I believe it's more for ponds...like where even if you plan placement of the pond you have to deal with "Acts of God" when it comes to weather and exposure, what have you. Indoors, not so much. There are only "Acts of You". Especially with plastic decor! Take the plastic stuff out and put it in a bucket to treat separately if you're gonna splash chemicals around? Wait, rinse, soak in Prime treated water for 10 min and chuck it back in. I do this with bleach and I've never had a casualty. This was your negligence. Read directions. Pre-Mix in separate container...even store it pre-mixed? Every single fish product that says "safe for fish" will kill your fish if mis-used. It's like saying you thought it said 20 Ibuprophen every 4 to 6 hours instead of 2 ibuprofen every 4 to 6 hours, then blasting Advil on RUclips when you kill your child. You are the caregiver of your fish. Now you are online trolling misinformation. If you wanted to share this with the public, you should have said exactly how much you didn't read the directions by sharing the amount you put in that killed fish in a 125 gallon tank. Tell people the consequences of carelessness and maybe reassure them with data....what if someone realized they only mis-dosed a tiny bit and want to know if they will prob be ok? Then you'd actually be contributing to the hobby. P.S. Live plants help tons for algae, there are plenty that cichlids will not eat and can't dig up if you secure them properly- or even not-tasty floating plants work wonders. Assuming you don't overdose food as well, believe it or not adding plants really is your only option for best algae control if you don't either completely eliminate the sunlight by relocating or cover it with something when being hit by sun..Algae usually is caused by too much to too little light, and picking hi-light needing plants when you needed low lighting plants and vice versa. Anyway good luck and please take some responsibility for yourself. This product has been around a lot longer than you have been a fish keeper. And I'm not even in to API, just saying. What did you have to gain by freaking people out and insisting they return their purchases? Hopefully it's something sensible like you work for Seachem or something.

This video is extremely misleading. I have used it for years with my freshwater fish and snails with zero negative side-effects. One dose usually does it. I always make sure to underdose some. Now with my snails I had to supplement their food for a few weeks to let some minor algea build up some. Tbh my snails mostly eat Snello now anyways, so I was not really worried about it. I do note all my tanks have HOB filters and sponge filters, so oxygen is always in the water. I need to note when an algea bloom crashes, there will be oxygen issues observed in the water. I would recommend to everyone to use an airstone or sponge filter when doing this treatment. API really needs to put this on their instructions. I guarantee hypoxia killed all these user's fish.

I have a tank with a bunch of guppies with friesand apple snails and all are well. Some did move above near the water line and some moved near the substrate but it's just like less than 5 mins. Just read, understand and follow the instructions. Happy Fishing.

Anyone reading my comment do not listen to this guy i literally just used api algaefix for a massive algae bloom in my 220ltr community tank which has many different kinds of fish and it works like magic within 1 hour my tank had almost cleared all the way up with all my fish doing just fine. The product works very well as long as you have some sort of Common sense unlike old mate in this vid.
