Wendell was using a Schiit Freya pre-amp (solid state version) and a single Schiit Vidar amp to drive the LRS+ at the Toronto Audio Show. Amazing sound from such a modest set-up...!
Until you hear something better. And, yes, the Schitt stuff seems adequate and appropriate.
I have the Freya+ and two Vidars with the original LRS in an upstairs, relatively small apartment. I also have a pair of REL Tzero MK3 subs. A couple days ago my local Magnepan dealer let me know he just got 4 pairs of the LRS+. I bought a pair and wow!! Whatever “secret” changes were made are definitely an improvement! I just hope I’ll be able to sell my original LRSs now. lol

I believe my Martin Logan Classic 9's from their Masterpiece series are very similar, but the low end with the alum. bass drivers a bit deeper. There is a video on this platform that compares a much larger Maggie, a Martin Logan and a very good dynamic tower speaker.
The ML and Maggie sounded very much the same, very relaxed on the high frequencies for sure. I find this with my ML estats. No harshness what so ever compared to TWO other systems in my home with dynamic drivers in their boxes LOL. Fun review guys! 😊
Adrian, thank you for your review insight. I also appreciate your music selections. I spent time this evening listening to your selections on my nearly year old .7s……very nice Powering .7s with vintage Bryston 4B. Very happy with this combo

Great review! Thank you for the playlist suggestions. My LRS+ was delivered on Oct 1st after I switched a Jan 2022 order of the LRS after seeing Adrian's interview with Wendell. I paired the LRS+ with an Oppo 105D as a preamp / DAC / Transport and a Parasound A23+ power amp. Like you I find the sound is fantastic at low, mid and high listening levels! I own electrostatic speakers that cost 15x the price of the LRS+ and I enjoy listening to both pairs of speakers equally.
That's the thing - liking the LRS+ doesn't negate the other. I always have more than one system going.

I ordered it in late May and I finally received my LRS+ for about a 10 days ago, it’s sure a super amazing speaker, it’s very transparent, just beautiful sound, 3D staging, it sounds super fast, the sound of a drum rim hit made me look up while listening and texting…yes, it has more bass than I expected, the bass is different than a dynamic speaker, the bass of LRS+ sounds more like a acoustic bass compare to a bass guitar bass sound…amazing value, it’s a must have for stereo lovers!

I’m so stoked. It feels like stumbling on a secret. I’ve rarely see almost unanimous praise about anything in the audio realm let alone something that is attainable for even those who are on the lower end of the audiophile budget. The size too is so perfect for someone like me. Very excited for my LRS+ this summer

Thank you. I have a smallish rectangular living room, with my LRS on Magna Risers facing straight ahead with zero toe in, positioned 5.5 ft from the front wall, tweeters on outside, about 7ft apart, chair pretty close at only 6ft from each speaker. I can’t EXPLAIN to you how much depth and vastness of soundstage there is. It’s that front-wall reflection (behind the speakers) that astonishes. Pass X-150.5 drives them like nobody’s business.

I just love hegel. The 390 is now drivning my b&w 702 s2 and its amazing had h190 before and it was good 390 is still big upgrade the bass depth is just mindblowing with h390😊
I was at the Magnepan LRS+ demo room at the show, and I believe that the rave reviews that you show in this video are actually for the new subwoofer, not the LRS+, which didn't get much air time compared to the new subwoofer, which I believe covers frequencies up to 8 or 10khz. We were fooled into thinking the LRS+ was playing in tandem with the subwoofer, but it was just the subwoofer playing and covering almost the full frequency range. That was a shock!
Not that the LRS+ didn't sound good, but the wide range subwoofer got all the attention when I was there. And the new subwoofer was stupendous, with shockingly deep bass, and an iron grip.

I only have experience with the LRS not the +…let me say that it really had a profound effect on me. Ive been in Hi-end audio since 1994. Decades of box speakers and ESLs.
This “little” speaker was PHENOMENAL.
It so “rocked” my world so to speak I had to have MORE. So I went for 3.7is after about a year. Best decision ever.
Maggies rule. Just admit it box speaker lovers. You love it too for what dynamic cone drivers can’t do…or maybe you don’t know yet….??? 😎
I say have TWO systems if you can do it: Magnetic planar (or ESLs if that’s your thing) and box speakers. Best of both worlds cake n eat it philosophy imo.
Horses for courses. My living room system is Magnepan 3.7i + Jeff Rowland 625 S2/AGD Audion. Alternate system: Tekton Encores (for now) + Pass Labs X250.8 (visits my living room system as well). *Note: You will need fast hi-quality subs if you play more modern music.

I bought a slightly used LRS because I plan to add the GR-Research crossover. Not only much higher quality caps and air coil inductors, but smooths the frequency response, and pulls enough low end off the tweeter that the cheap fuse is no longer needed. With the stock speaker, I don't find a single Vidar delivers enough current to drive to reasonable volume without overheating. Vidar sounds great w/ my Merlin TSM-MMe w/ Mapletree Ultra 4SE pre w/ NOS RCA tubes. MacMini feeding a Schiit Bifrost DAC.
I have the orginal LRS model and really enjoy their sound. My room is difficult even though I've installed bass traps, a diffusion screen and absorption panels and yet these things still sounds great. I do use a small but very tight sub for hard driving tracks. I have 2 pretty powerful amps.... an school AB dual momo and a new school class D with even more power. Both sound good if a bit different. Don't hear any loss in the highs.... seems smooth and detailed. Also.... these things do seem to draw you into the music emotionally with their depth and wide sound stage. If the + is better then it represents an amazing bang for the buck in a market with many extravagantly priced products.😅
A cheap tweak that really opens up the LRS+ is to replace the steel bar used in the Tweeter Attenuator. It's easy to do. Just swap it with a solid piece of Copper wire, or a piece of good quality speaker wire.
Copper is the 2nd best conductor. Steel comes in at #26 on the list. So get it out of there. It's creating a bottleneck, limiting the tweeter sound quality. I think you'll be surprised at the improvement.
So, just give it a try and see what you think. If you don't agree with me, just put the steel connector back. Simple as that.

Well, we did mention the LS3/5A. Yah, maybe one of the Audionotes - E or J. From my own collection - past and present: Wilson Watt/Puppy 6. Quad ESL57. Martin-Logan CLS. Spendor BC1. Altec 604E. Klipsch LaScala.
I went to my local Magnepan dealer to purchase a pair of LRS. Ended up with the 1.7i instead. The way I interpreted the difference between the LRS and the 1.7 is that the 1.7 was three times the speaker. It was one of those rare instances where you literally got what you paid for. I still have them and they are still amazing to me.

I just set mine up, the LRS+, and am blown away. How can they do this for a grand? They are cleaning the floor with my Zu's right now. Simply incredible sound. I knew they would be good from the reviews I saw, but I think some of you reviewers were holding back. These are staying.
Vilip and Adrian, you are so enthusiastic about the LRS+ that it feels like you’d prefer the LRS+ over all the bigger Maggie. It’d be interesting to see a comparison of the LRS+ with 1.7i.
The 1.7i is also an awesome speaker but it is more than double the price of the LRS+ and really requires even better power amps. And because it is so much bigger, the 1.7i needs more space to set up properly - you can't get away with the compromises you can with the LRS+.
@@vilipmak3973 I don't like speaking or asking superlative questions but is it safe to assume in some respects that the LRS + may have bettered the .7? I'v been locked in a battle of which one is better for me, but starting to feel like from an all things considered stand point that the LRS + may be the away to go. Care to give any further perspective of the + v the .7.
I bought a pair of .7s last year just before the price went up. Now they are double the price of the LRS+. The LRS is direct from Magnepan, so I didn’t get to audition them. But I did compare the .7s to 1.7s and some Martin Logans. If I had the room, I would’ve gotten the 1.7s. But the .7s worked out wonderfully, especially since I added a REL T7/x sub a few months ago. My H90 does great with those Maggies. I’d love to hear the Stooges compare those three Maggies.
@@greganderson1681 I have the 1.7i and listened to the LRS+ critically for a few hours but I prefer the sound from 1.7i more. Its bigger life size sound stage is more enjoyable. I don’t find the 1.7i require more space than the LRS+. Both require at least 6ft apart to have an open soundstage. Overall, to my ears, the 1.7i has more body to the sound. I was considering the LRS+ for my 14x16ft room but the placement is almost the same as my 1.7i.
I didn’t think my 1.7i could sound dynamic, or have impressive bass, until I connected my JC5 to them with Kimber 24tc- high current speaker cables. Imaging improved also.

Vilip, are these now audiophile speakers? You stated the LRS (or any Magnepan) speaker can not because of it's inability to image. Great job guys! I have my LRS+ on order.
You guys listened with panel 33 inches from front wall. What was your listening distance and distance to back wall? Thanks
I have no idea what improvements Magnepan has made to the LRS+ vs the original. I have a set of the originals and recently added a pair of Magna Risers (Air). The stands have made a huge difference. Listening to Saint Saens' Symphony No. 3 "Organ" - Eugene Ormandy, Philadelphia Orchestra with Michael Murray (organist) - Telarc 1980 has brought the biggest (in recent memory) smile to my face. If you can locate a copy, you should play it with your LRSs+.
The Magna Risers do make quite a difference. +1 👍🏻
Can you drop a tip how LRS+ compares with 1.7i? What would you advise for 13' x 13' room. I can sit a maximum 9' away from them and have them 4' from front wall. I can also support LRS+ with 2x subs if necessary and kinda like a bit lover profile of them. What do you think should work best? LRS+ or 1.7i?

The price is certainly appealing though. Question; all that chat about imaging/sound stage reminded me, I've been wondering if you folks have had a chance to audition a Bacch processor/brought one into your store yet?
How does the distance from the front wall affect the sound? Would 12”-24” be sufficient? Or is more distance required for good sound?
I guessed and got it right, I decided to get a Peachtree Gan400 for my LRS+’s a few weeks ago. Along with the Schitt Freya + it is a very well Integrated system.
I accidentally got the right things. I got a vidar 2 just for my kefs n then stumbled on to learning of Magnepan n then the LRS+ n just got a freya N on close out. Seems random but my timing to get into this hobby was perfect
I just received my LRS+ and wonder what your recommendation for a DAC/AMP in the under $2000 range.
It’s good to know we don’t need to spend a ton of money to get “audio excellence”😂. I’m curious Vilip, do you ever go back and listen to the tracks (e.g., Diana Krall) on other gear soon after and see if those subtleties and nuances are present in the same way? If so, are they more similar than you originally thought or are they really distinctly different. I understand even the most minuscule of detail can be important. I always enjoy your take. Good review guys!
So, I listen to the same tracks over and over again. There is a Diana Krall track that lends itself really well to reveal the capabilities of gear - "A Case of You" from Live in Paris. I listen to the first bit before she starts singing. The recording has captured an extreme amount of the stage - with good gear, you should be able to hear all the shuffling and coughing and fidgeting and so forth and also have a real sense that there is this giant stage. With the LRS+, I definitely hear all these things easily. However, there's no real way of measuring how much of these things I'm hearing. The important thing is not how much but that I am - hearing these nuances, that is. And really, this spatial ability is only one aspect about why a speaker might be great.

It’s ironic but seems like direct to consumer/small dealer network American brands are delivering higher end and lower costs. Wether you like them all or not it’s hard to ignore the value combined with tech Magnepan, Schiit, and Rythmik are bringing. I just started getting into all this last year via Vinyl n im so glad about my timing.
I’m not a bass head, but do like bass. Will these work well enough with a sub?
Is this a good speaker as the base of a hifi setup? Would a cheap amp like a fosi drive these?
Pros and cons. It is all about compromises. I combined an old school Marantz 15" woofer with a newer Danish Triad (MTM). Is it as analytical as an LRS? No. Can I crank it and rattle my windows with killer base and balanced mids and highs? Hell yes.
Great job!😊. After all those raves, here's my question: In absolute terms (not bang for the money), is the 3.7 or 1.7i better? Can I get more absolute performance buying a 3.7 or 1.7i ?
What do you mean by "absolute"? Should be the "right" kind of performance and that is essentially a preference thing. In absolute terms, the 3.7i is more. Most will find it "better". The 1.7i plays bigger than the LRS+.

Good question! I think Adrian and Villip both own Magnepan but not their primary speakers? Adrian has mentioned his 6 figure Wilson’s and Vilip vintage AltecLansing.
I'm using Klipsch LaScala at the moment. And I have owned the LRS. And lots of other speakers. I just got another pair of Wilson Watt/Puppies. And too many other speakers including ALtec, JBL, Tannoy.
How would these compare to similarly priced Martin Logans ?
Vilip, have you ever heard the vintage Sony V-Fet amps? The upper models with lots and lots of Vfets inside? Within 30 seconds of hearing one for the first time, I thought "Vfets don't have any hint of TIM distortion. Completely free of grain. All the transistor amps I've heard have a certain sound that I thought was just inherent with transistors. It's hard to describe, and you don't realize it's there until you hear an amp that is totally free of it.. Maybe it would be heaven to use an LRS+ with one of the bigger beefier vintage Sony Vfet amps. Sony warns against using them with impedences below 4 ohms. Because of their rarity and value (in the thousands), many people who have the upper model Vfet amps pamper them and use them in smaller rooms where they don't have to tax them making them do high volume , and using them in a smaller room; well, their not spatiality champions anyway.. Tone colors extraordinaire, deeper than I've heard with other transistor amps are their forte, along with smoothness galore, and the musicality of the bass is amazing for some reason.
I know nothing about electrostatic speakers. Can they be used for home theater?
To Vilip's comments regarding the frame being a bit more "twisty," I believe the LRS+ no longer has the side trim pieces which the original LRS had and I think are present on the .7 and the 1.7. That might contribute to this mechanical phenomenon. Impact on the sound? It's hard to say. Seems like the omission might be more along the lines to help reduce the overall manufacturing cost. Pure speculation on my part. Food for thought.
So, no wood stiles, yes. And also with the speaker being 1 inch less wide, the frame is actually less wide at the side. The membrane looks about the same width as on the LRS.
@@vilipmak3973 Understand. As indicated - the reduction of the frame width might be contributing to a small reduction in lateral mechanical strength of the entire structure.
Wow listening levels with the LRS+ 90 to 98 db!! I have the Maggie's .7's with Magnarisers stands and they are in a fairly large room My amp has crazy watts/current ie 1,200 watts at 2 ohms I'm no spring chicken so my ears are not what they use to be and l listen typically around 75 db with peaks in the low 80's I can't imagine listening to my .7's at 98 db!! Great review of the LRS+ guys !! Also lots of really good information for anyone considering the LRS+
What about the fuse of the Magnepan. Is there an audible upgrade by changing them? And if yes by what? Thx
I would look at the GR Research kit, mine will be here Monday. It eliminates the fuse, and replaces all of the nasty stuff from the factory with better quality parts. Go watch the video Danny did over at GR Research and you will understand. I just changed both fuses out, no clue what happened. I just set up these speakers and they are blowing fuses. I need to head up to Home Depot and get some more. Grrrr.... It could be the gain on my active crossover that is doing this, will turn it back and see what happens.
While waiting for the LRS + to get from your store to Vancouver, I have an opportunity to purchase a pair of PS Audio M700. Vilip and Adrian have mentioned the H95, which I currently own, may shut down during high spl playback. Have any of you tried the M700 / LRS+ combo? Any insight is appreciated. whaaat ? because you can twist the frame it has more sparkle ? haha :) it means there is less wood supporting the driver.... at best it would hurt the low end since the smaller the frame the earlier the 6dB rolloff will occur

Curious to hear from Maggie enthusiasts here (or the AE team) what systems (streamer, DAC, cabling) they’ve decided on? (I know I know). Sticking w pro Belden/Mogami cabling or the audiophile route? I have a Hegel H190 paired w .7i.
We used Peahtree PreDAC/GaN400 combo with an ifi Zen Stream. AQ Carbon Digital Coax cable. Nordost Blue Heaven RCA IC between the pre and power. Nordost Purple Flare speaker cable. Stock power cables plugged into a Shunyata Venom V16 power distributor. I think, just off the top of my head.

I paired the LRS+ with an old unused MacBook Air for a streamer, an Oppo 105D as a preamp / DAC / Transport and a Parasound A23+ power amp. The sound is amazing! And all for less than $4000 USD. Existing cabling is 20+ years old which I plan to update with pro-audio Neutrik XLR NC3M(F)XX-B / Mogami W2534 quad cable and Canare quad 4S11 or Mogami W3104 quad Speaker Cables.
I have 2 questions. I guess you guys didn't hear it with the new magnepan subwoofers as i have seen there was a video from it on "the audio bell" 3 months ago on the texas audio show. Would be a different story for the low notes. Also, how does it perform at late night low volume listening? Great video by the way! thumbs up!
Dude I was there at the Texas Show. With the new woofers the system is simply freaking awesome!! If the set was available for purchase at the show, all 3 or 4!of there would have purchased the LRS + and the woofer…. !!
@@JuanGarcia-kv7yv And still it reaches only 50 hz...That sub was not mentioned in the video. I thought it was only about the lrs+ without the subs.

To use the wide band bass system, you would need to measure the room acoustically and apply a crossover function in the DSP to blend with the panels. Wendel did not bring the DSP to TAF and could not demo the panel and the dipole bass towers together.
Ahh ok. I guessed it was like that. They were on the Texas audio show but it was only the lrs plus that was reviewed in this video without the new subs that are about to be released or just released. There is another video of magnepan to be found on youtube where he uses both the lrs+ and new woofers to shown. But again not commercially available at the time of that video.
Would you guys go with the LRS+ in BLACK or WHITE, and WHY?
they're good i have a pair but not as good as my 30 year old esl 57s, both are helped by small subs

I like the LRS+ better. Better is subjective. However, the .7i is excellent too.
Did any of you try tube amplification during you evaluation. If so, your impressions.
I’ve tried my 1.7i with Icon Audio Stereo 60 tube amp with KT150. I didn’t expect much from it. The mid range sounded ok but the bass is very muddy and slow, lack definition. It affects the whole balance at the midnight and treble. Tube amp generally has low damping factor which is unsuitable for Maggie.
That's a harder thing. Tubes can drive magnepans adequately. You might be a little less satisfied with the quality of the bass output.
What’s the best amp match for these speakers . Should I buy a McIntosh, peach tree , Hegel , rotes ?
"Best" is so subjective... I know I like Parasound A21+ paired with Magnepan
Under $3k, Wendell’s Schiit Frey/Vidar combo is probably a safe bet. I have my .7i driven by a Hegel H190. Very dynamic and refined.
Parasound A23+ (or any Halo amp) is a great match with LRS+.

The demo was in two parts. Bass tower and then the LRS+. They weren't demonstrated together.
That sounds odd. I thought Thomas & Stereo indicated the subs were playing first then everyone was told that the panels were off and then the amp was switched on for the panels
@@stephennarayan Thomas was wrong. Wendel did not bring his DSP setup. He used two Vidar amps. One was connected to the bass towers and the other was connected to the LRS+. He alternated between the two. The bass towers could play up to at least 10kHZ. So, yes, it could fool the majority of listeners.

So I suppose one of the "problems" with the LRS is that it is cheap, but requires a good amplifier which is not cheap. Would there be a good amp to pair with these LRS+ that does not break the bank? Maybe cap around $1500? Would a Hegel H95 work well with these?
Parasound A23+ ... The 21+ would be better IMO

@@larrywe3320 That would still require a preamp like the Halo H6 or the like. So, A23+ and the P6 would be in CAD around $4500.
The H95 might very well be completely appropriate. The LRS+ seems to be a bit easier than the LRS. Both Adrian and I have used the H95 to drive the LRS and both of us have experienced the H95 shutting down after a hour or so of high volumes with the H95 set at a volume of 65 to 70.
I Drive them using the H95 and when I want to listen to them loud, I remove the top and install a small fan underneath the heatsink. Sounds great and can't hear the fan at that volume anyway.

I think it is very simple: there is nothing coming close to the Magnepans (even beyond the price range) if you are listening to classical music and specifically everything with choirs and voices….and that is not only true for the LRS. If you want a wall shaking rock concert experience….then there are better choices.
no box. very light membrane. controlled dispersion in horizontal and vertical planes. why buy TAD Reference with diamond cones and diamond tweeters when you can have slightly better sound above 100Hz from Maggies? Match it with OB bass and...

It might be a very good sounding speaker for the money, but its not good design extreamly innefficiant 80 db sensitivity only and is at all times below 4 ohms in impedence, that takes some insane amount of power to drive that speaker at high volume, for loud volumes their is a lot better speakers to go for

Yeah, they should have the speaker at least in the same room while talking excessively about it. Also because they unfortunately NEVER give (gave) us any listening samples (and no! The „argument“ of not being allowed because of music rights etc is not valid as others do it constantly!!)

@@bikemike1118 Well they probably have them set up in the room already, and listening samples in my opinion doesnt really make sense anyway as there are too many variables from the actual room to your ears.
@@bingoberra18 yes, there are variables…that‘s true. But nevertheless with some listening experience you do get an impression in comparison to other speakers (or your own pair at home). So it does make sense regardless of variables which are surely there. Talk alone doesn’t help either as it’s also subjective and …in this case from people whose actual profession is to sell.

Say it again: extremely light membrane and no box = creates lifelike sound. Its not rocket science, but try to beat Maggies in that department. You would need to go Alsyvox..

Magnepan speakers are a novelty at best. They draw so much power they destroy amplifiers, and the people that work there are not informed about the products enough to be answer questions about compatibility. Also, the sound is directional and don't film the room well. Buy SVS instead and save yourself the headache. These aren't "great," speakers by any measurement.

Hmm is this plus with no wood sides truly worth 350 dollars more than my original lrs with oak sides? Cough cough bullshit. Doubtful. In any event the cheap crap magnepan does in the back with the steel jumpers would be a place to start modding. The plus may be better but 50 percent bettet? Yeah sure pal. I do find that each improvement I have made on electronics the LRS has kept up with. I use Bryston the best gear ever the best company and service. Period and nuff said.

Actually they are poor set of loudspeakers, they measure poorly every where. The frequency response is all over the place, and the panal suffers some resonance issues.

Some speakers measure perfectly well but sound like pure crap! I suggest you go and measure other things out there. LOL … idiot, absolute beginner in this hobby!
I prefer to listen to speakers, measuring is boring.
An anechoic chamber measures perfectly - you wouldn't want that to be your listening room.

I have MG12 Q/R speakers that I bought used a couple years ago for $500 cad. It was my introduction into Maggie's while I was considering getting the LRS. I've not heard the LRS or LRS+ yet I hope too soon if the subwoofers ship so that I can hear them either at Audio Excellence or at the next Montreal Audio Fest
Hi I had the the mq 12 and I liked it better only problem I found it bright but I'd rather have the option of tuningbthe treble than have a warm speaker that I need to use the lrs it without the resistors I loved the Mg12 QR keep them theybare much bigger these are small
