Palpatine as Anakin's "Father"? It's Up to You, Star Wars Fans

  • Did Palpatine "father" Anakin Skywalker? Ever since Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith debuted, I've believed that -- and it was recently erroneously reported to have been discredited by Lucasfilm, but simply isn't the case. With some help from Sam Witwer (Starkiller in The Force Unleashed, plus voiced of Emperor Palpatine, Maul and more in games and animation), this video makes the case for Palpatine -- while also making it clear it's ambiguous and ultimately your call as a fan.

I always thought this was kinda obvious, since when i saw the ROTS as a kid. It really surprised me that many people don't even consider it a possibility

I've thought of Palpatine as Anakin's father for as long as I can remember, especially after I saw that original Revenge of the Sith script where he even tells Anakin to look at him like a father.
And now, I'm not sure. After Matt and Charles debunked the comic book panel that people thought showed Palpatine, creating Anakin in Shmi's stomach, I'm confused.
I still want that to be the case, but I can't make out if the whole theory is debunked or what. I, too, feel like there is a loophole in their debunking, but I, honestly, hope we never find out which is true or false. I wish it to be one of those things that people theorize and talk, but never get an answer to because, well, where's the fun in that?

I hope we don't find out either. There are no loopholes in their response -- just continued ambiguity. The vision has Shmi already pregnant anyway, so that still doesn't suggest Palpatine was actually responsible for her being that way to begin with.

I think Palpatine came back as a clone which his spirit then possesed, hence no lightning scars in his face. Cloned body, same spirit.

Added together more people believed that Anakin was created by Plagues or Palpatine then the Force alone. Also this writer said "unreliable" not "100% no". It's still open ended I think.

I watched the Red Letter Media review and Mike brought up how the actual Palpatine wasn't in the other movies at all. The real Palpatine was on...I'm not going to even try to spell it and a clone of him was the one moving about the senate and what not.

I have wondered about this for awhile. That dialog always stuck with me. It laid so many breadcrumbs. All along it's been there.
And excellent use of highlighting the various fakeouts & truths as well within the series
    Another touchstone:
Here me out, I know it's bizarre
In Kingdom Hearts, Xehanort is split across time and space, similar to a certain fellow. But the unity of those souls within his organization are not just host bodies, but those from the past. Drawn to his dark energy. As one
I get the feeling that SW built a similar parallel, waiting for fans to connect the dots.
Even the Knights of Ren were possible followers, but became Ren's highly ranked soldiers, influenced by a power unlike their own. Nobodies? Possibly. They were to be the next generation for the Light side, but darkness corrupted their hearts.
Especially with the Armada hidden away until the time came. The First Order essentially pawns within this vast chessboard. Where the real Armada was brought to this Sith homeworld.
And seeing how Xehanort / Palpatine seek another to take as a host body. One with essence, energy, and strength that is already powerful, but has to awaken their true potential.
I admire the narrative still. There is so much depth in Star Wars, and it's influence in other forms of storytelling.

Wow, thanks for the awesome comment! I haven't played Kingdom Hearts, but I see what you're saying. I went a little nuts theorizing in relation to another favorite pop-culture touchstone myself... 😀 medium.com/@cbake76/how-id-do-it-the-rey-snoke-palpatine-spider-man-clone-saga-connection-76c5f42173dc

Why would Palpatine start this experiment then abandon it. If he knew there was a potentially powerful child on Tatooine. He'd have collected him to train like he did with Darth Maul.

Good question! Good be a number of things, but I think it all comes down to it being such an extreme use of Force powers that he hasn't had experience with. The actual process of manipulating the midi-chlorians may not have been confined to geography, a specific person, or a given timeframe (it could have taken decades).

Well, having the most powerful jedi (chosen one, member of council, close friend to chancellor) become a traitor and killing the order from inside doesn't seem like an abandoned experiment
