    The score being dependent on your cards is not really a problem with project sekai specifically, the entire idol rhythm game genre has that 'feature' and its understandibly not for everyone. And with it being an idol rhythm game the many currencies are just a norm, one currency for one menu. You just go around the game menus and level everything you can/want to and then get on with your life. That's generally how I play these sorts of games.

    oh i totally get how you feel... before project sekai's release, i was really bitter. i thought it would never top diva for me, i thought the characters were boring, and i thought the rhythm game was lame. but everything grew on me SO hard. diva was special to me, and as much as i hate how sega tries to profit off of it by making rehashed releases, it will never stop having a special place in my heart. and when i heard of project sekai's release, i was angry because i thought "why would they make original characters when they can make a game with vocaloids alone instead!" or "vocaloids in a story setting again? ugh!" or "this is corporate trash!"
    and no, the mvs aren't better. the vocaloids don't shine in the story. and the vocaloids aren't even the main focus of the game. but i somehow love the game now. and i think it's because i realized i wanted the game to be something it was never intended to be.
    the characters are all so fun and unique. i love the conflicts and themes in the story. i love a lot of the charts in the game. so much of the card art and the concepts behind it are incredibly creative. the song selection combines old and new vocaloid songs. and the vocaloid's personalities vary throughout the groups, channeling a part of what vocaloid always is and always should be; varied and artistic.
    everything in this game is varied, actually. the vocaloid's personalities, the styles, the aethetics, the art, the symbolism; everything.
    this game never was what i wanted at first; a game that uses vocaloid characters and is just a plain old song list. instead, i got something better, being a game centered around the perspective looking INTO vocaloid. it's the perspective of vocaloid nerds and lovers, or just those who experience the genre in general. this game feels less like a game about vocaloid characters, and more like a love letter to vocaloid as a whole that is contained within a game. it's detailing what vocaloid is to people and how it can help them (side note, one of the themes in 25ji story being about "saving people with songs" made me feel deeply understood. it's something that not only i have noticed in the vocaloid space, but something that i am able to relate to. and seeing that the creators of the game's story understand that..? god. it fills me with a feeling i can't describe. it's like the community i love is finally being understood by artists who can put their work out there and reach a larger audience through a game like this. it just feels... good). vocaloid, something near and dear to me, has been put in hands that i trust. and it's being used so incredibly well.
    oh also adding this! i just wanted to give my take on leveling cards for your score. i honestly don't think it's that bad. in fact, i think it just adds more to the game. leveling cards just gives me more incentive to play songs. i've found that i don't return to games like project diva (when it's not watching mvs) much anymore because i really have no incentive to play since i've unlocked everything. but the gacha system makes it impossible to own everything, and logically, you can never run out of cards to level because of 2 stars and new 3 stars getting added every week or so. without leveling cards, a lot of fun grinding and other features dependent on card strength would be lost. i don't see it as them saying card stats > skill, but more as it being card stats AND skill matter. with skill, you can get full combo crystals, and with cards, you get score crystals. plus, that makes it so players who struggle with rhythm games as a whole don't miss out on major rewards while still rewarding players for their skill in other ways. but this might also just be because leveling up cards is just satisfying for me alskjf

      holy shit YOU should've made this video not me lmao. I never thought about sekai this deeply before but this all makes alot of sense to me and is pretty much the arc I went with this game.
      Vocaloid (DIVA especially) is something I hold in a very special place, I probably wouldn't be the same person and wouldn't have met some of the great people I know now without it.
      Appreciating sekai was a challenge but it really did grow on me (don't know if I made that apparent enough). I'll take DIVA over it any day but I'm more inclined to see it's positive aspects now

    Ichika being more of an observer in the main story is kind of the point. It’s been mentioned that she used to be more initiative when she was younger, but constant rejections made her withdraw. She starts gaining back those traits at the end of the main story, and she grows a lot in the event stories - to the point that she’s currently one of the quickest characters to take agency when something goes wrong. She’s well aware that she changed from when she was a kid, and at the beginning, she considers her past self to be better than her present self.
    She’s also a huge ass dork, I love her. PJSK in general has an issue where the main stories are pretty much just the introductions to the characters. There’s like three years worth of development missing.

  • @corndawg9595
    @corndawg9595 Год назад +250

    I’m pretty sure Ichika is supposed to be the game’s self insert character. She has a relatively simple design that reminds me of a standard isekai protagonist. Also her being an avid Miku fan to make her more relatable to the audience. Tbh I think she was done dirty on that front but LeoNeed is my least favorite group right now so I haven’t read through most of their events.
    Also something I really like about MMJ’s story is that in their first key event (which takes place right after the end of their main story) they try to get into an agency and when no one will take them they decide to freelance instead! Since you said you hate idol culture I thought you might like that part? I think it’s cool that they have control over their own group and don’t let an agency break them up. From what I know about idol culture a lot of the toxicity comes from the agencies. MMJ is committed to being authentic and doesn’t lose sight of their real goal to encourage others like them. :)

    • @mau1368
      @mau1368  Год назад +44

      Yeah you're on the money with Ichika, it feels really weird that she's sorta the only character who acts as a self insert when you could start with any other group if you answer the right questions on first boot, and they all don't have someone like Ichika (maybe Kohane?). Makes me wish they did more with her as a character
      I'll have to take your word for MMJ. I haven't completed the story but if that's how it ends then that's pretty neat. My stated view on idol culture is admittedly surface level since it's an industry i don't involve myself in, but alot of what I infer from it is usually toxic agencies as you've pointed out. Doesn't stop me from occasionally dropping into a hololive stream or two every few months but yeah

      U dont get to realize how well written ichika is of a character if u dont even try to look into more event stories, she develops and becomes less of a “self insert” in the event stories (as someone who’s read ALL of her card stories and every event story in the game) She wasn’t done dirty. Her whole character is that she was COMPLETELY alone for 2 years with only miku as her comfort while her two best friends were constantly avoiding her and her other best friend was hospitalized and she couldn’t tell her a thing because she didn’t want her to be upset with her condition, So she had NO ONE to tell about anything that she was going through. Ichika is timid and cannot speak up well for herself, She comes back to it MULTIPLE times in her development how she was someone weak and could only stand while things happened in the past and regretted it so much, But later on, She is able to speak her mind properly and become more confident as a person without having any doubt or fear anymore and idk how to explain it better, It’s just smth rlly good if u watch the stories themselves and see it for yourself

    Side note: characters will appear in different places of different characters for the intended MV dep. So if the original lineup is Kaito, Tsukasa, Rui, Emu, Nene and you have the team Luka, Miku, Toya, Mizuki, Mafuyu, then Luka=Kaito, Miku=Tsukasa, Toya=Rui, Mizuki=Emu and Mafuyu=Nene

    I like how the gacha has a more "I like this card" appeal rather than the more traditional "I want it because it will make what I have stronger" appeal because it isnt like getting a incomplete set of items in a action game,where a lot of the power is locked from you just because you don't have an item or weapon.Gacha is made to feel bad when you dont get something,because that will make you spend money,so not having this feeling mixed with the practical usage aspect feels a lot better

    for the mvs i think there were specific reasons why the two you mentioned (bring it on + senbonzakura) didn't have mvs
    bring it on was sort of like a group introductory song for the group Vivid BAD SQUAD, which, along with all of the other introductory songs (roki for L/n, happy synthesizer for MMJ, sweet magic for WxS and jishoumushoku for N25) were used in the project sekai trailer as an introductory to the voices and overall vibes of the said group. In the trailer, they had to showcase the 3D mvs for whatever reason I have no idea for, so they made only 3D mvs for all of it. They didn't add the original mv probably because it was one of the earliest songs the vas recorded (I think the earliest for the vbs group even before their commissioned ready steady) and they never. went. back. to. it. like ever. they ripped bring it on off.
    senbonzakura on the other hand might be seen as a controversy issue, because project sekai tried to cater to all audiences, i dont think the rest of the world was really big on the themes of "ooh yuh japanese nationalism and anti westernization!!!1!) of which i think it even got taken down on the korean servers for it (edit: they did 💀), but it is a really iconic song so i think the devs just wanted to lowkey add it in and forget about it.
    idk thats what i could find but theres really not a lot of info about this online (esp for the senbonzakura one the bring it on one was easier)

    she's a teenage girl, not an adult, of course she's insecure and scared about her relationships with her classmates. She's a victim of bullying that was caused by ostracization, of course she wouldn't wanna risk going through that again. Is it a justifiable reasoning? No, but it's definitely not a criticism for the story. It makes sense with her character and she comes clean with her selfishness by the end of it. A character doing something morally wrong doesn't equate to bad writing

    30:46 Regarding the scoring system in MVP during co-op where it only relies on the team strength, actually the devs had make another option of gameplay to take care of this. Idk whether it's on global yet but it has been for awhile in JP server. There's this thing called Rank Match. So basically it's like a duel. You would be paired with other random player, picked random song with random difficulties. Don't worry the randomness of song choice would not be out of your rhythm game ability radar. Like I'm sure I would fail miserably for Master song level 32 above but the game never picked those songs to me. It also would not choose songs that would be too easy for you too. I can FC most on Expert Level hence they never gave Easy or Normal difficulties to me. The scoring is simple where at the end your total Perfect notes is timed 4, great timed 3, good x2, bad x1, and miss x0. The one who gets higher point wins. If you win, you'll get a batch, and if you lose you lost a batch. It also got trophies (don't remember how many) classified as bronze, silver, gold, platinum, etc. Each trophies has 4 level with 5 badges each. So technically every trophies have 20 batch. It works like rating system. The 3 first gameplay is to determine where's your initial trophy placement. If the result is quite good, you can be placed quite high. But remember you can win and loss, so at the end of each season there's a possibility your placement is lower than your initial placement. Each season occurs for a month if I remember correctly. There's also reward depends on your final placement.

    as a person who's been playing rhythm games(mostly mobile) almost their entire life, is heavily into vocaloid, and has barely touched the gacha genre, this game rly just found a way into my heart :'))
    i first heard of this game before it was released through an old friend, and thought of maybe downloading it,,, and i finally did in july 2022 and oh boy i GENUINELY thought i was going to simply play the rhythm game part of it and ignore the gacha and other stories, and i did for a few months,, until another friend of mine decided to pull on a gacha for me and it was honestly a rabbit hole from there HAHA i started with grinding for 4* cards that i thought looked rly cool/pretty, to actually trying to read other stories and events that weren't only VBS and N25, just so i had more of a reason to want cards of other characters
    and lo and behold i became attached to certain characters and just the whole thing of vocaloids helping people out in the game(it resonated with me as vocaloid is such a huge part of my life) i already loved playing the rhythm game itself with its rather simple interface and the fact that i knew a LOT of the songs and artists in the selection and just wAAA i didn't expect this dumb little game to mean this much to me now, and i don't regret downloading it :'DD
    the whole "idol gacha rhythm game" genre is still not my type (i've downloaded bandori before but got too intimidated with the amount of stuff shoved at me so i uninstalled), but project sekai managed to make it easier for me to understand it a little more :D i will heavily agree tho the amount of currencies are annoying and are still annoying to me *cries* i don't even use a solid 1/4th of the currencies,,, and the thing with scores being solely based on the cards instead of skill😭, i used to be so pissed when i'd fc a song and all i get is a C, but the more i played, the less i paid attention to the scores tbh LOL i still find it a bit weird but e h, i've eventually accepted that it's how it works and had fun grinding my cards instead
    very well made video btw

    tbh my biggest gripe w pjsk is the gacha system. they’re so stingy with currency that i would often go multiple events without being able to pull. it’s also practically impossible to get. a featured character, and the pity system resets after every event. i’ve probably gotten a total of 2 featured characters, only one limited, and i’ve pulled on, like, a hundred. it’s hard to even get a 4*.
    i just saw a vid where a girl pulled on the evillous banner 170 times and got 2 4*s and only one was the limited one. they don’t even make up for it by letting you choose which card you want, so you may not even get the one you’re pulling for.

    also, i was incredibly hyped when they commissioned niru kajitsu like i was so excited. every so often theyll add a song to the game and ill go "ohhh, i havent heard this one ! this is great, im going to listen to it more outside the game" and thats the story behind me rediscovering hiiragikirai.
    i do kinda agree the amount of menu layers and currencies are a mess but i think ive gotten used to it by now.
    on topic of the gacha: i kind of use it as a motive to keep playing regularly. i often find myself falling out of stride in games without a clear objective or further progress, so the fact that i can get by on my mastery 5 3stars well enough, but i could ALSO log in to get more crystals for enas birthday gacha... thats the extra dose of motivation that gets me logging in past my chronic lack of energy

    I just need to vent my frustration with this game.
    I saw some YTers I like play the game and I wanted to try it. Everything was going fine for a long time. Sometime in last summer, the performance just dropped. Now my phone is old, but if I can run Star Rail and it lags way less and rarely crashes, where as Project Sekai it’s more common to lag more than not and I’ve crashed numerous times while just watching the story. Why does watching text scroll and pngs that barely move make my phone more hot than playing hours of Honkai Star Rail? Virtual lives have been bugged for like 4+ months now. Most of the time I just ignore them because they’re at like 2am. On the rare occasion where I don’t have to ruin my sleep schedule to catch them, it lags EVERYONE out and we wouldn’t get any rewards sometimes. I think for a while they just gave up and gave people the full rewards instead of partial even though the text still says, “partial rewards”. The buttons also don’t work while I’m the virtual live. I just gave up and downloaded Bandori and what do you know? It works perfectly fine. At this point I’m just playing for the story because I really like it. Now it’s getting crazy how much more monetization is getting added ONTOP of freaking gacha that’s apparently only in the EN version.
    After looking some stuff up, it seems like the team working on EN is either VERY small, new, overworked or all 3. I can’t really blame the devs if it’s any of the 3 above, but it’s just annoying.

    The VOCALOIDs aren't supposed to have any canon personalities but they could easily write them well and tell everyone that the personalities in the game are not canon.

    Watching this video 11 months after it got uploaded made me realize how little content PJSK used to be. As someone who is in love with rhythm games but almost knows nothing about vocaloid, more so because i didn't grow up with it in my childhood. Project Sekai literally dragged me into knowing more about vocaloid than my sister (who is a fan of vocaloid music) ever could.
    Listening to your (almost outdated) criticism about this game clearly miffed me a bit, but it's still oddly interesting to listen to. I learned about this game when i was still a middle schooler who only has discord and anime as my comforter from my harsh and dull reality, and i admit my first impression of the game is not that great either but it's probably due to me playing the game with the Japanese version instead of the global version at first, and because of that i dont understand a thing (my mistake on that part). I thought the game was a waste of my time, but somehow, i gave it another chance (with the correct version, of course).
    And it absolutely grows on me. The stories, the characters, and its system in general made me love PJSK as a whole. Maybe it's because im still a teen, but the characters and their story are so relatable to me that i instantly got attached to the majority of the PJSK characters. And this is one of the things where i feel miffed about your review. Is that the gameplay is by no means easy, oh no, it's getting more painfully hard by the day (proof of JPSEKAI's hell charts), and because of that, it kept me entertain by having to hurt my thumbs everytime i have to play a lvl28 charts just to get rewards so i can get my desired (gacha) cards in the future 💀.
    I dont know how it happened, but because i got to know about PJSK the way i did a year and a half ago, i now became obsessed with this game that it became slightly unhealthy (im dealing with it-) and i know alot more about vocaloid and its producers with their community. I'm honestly not sure why i like this game in the first place other than its feeding my need to gamble on pulling for pretty png cards and feeling accomplished whenever i got an A/S and getting FC when i finished a song, but it will always has a special place in my heart.

      I agree with their distribution and lack of real use, but imo that in itself is an issue/redundancy. If you hardly need them then why are they there to begin with? I understand it's to grind for those who want to but it deters me from engaging with the rest of the games systems because stuff needs one specific currency because...reasons
      Personally, having the player choose carefully what they want from multiple things with a more centralised currency system would be more engaging and memorable for them, as they'd think more carefully towards what they're actually getting from purchases instead of the equivalent of filling a quota for something specific.

    project sekai is clearly not all about the rhythm game part, so your skill does not matter that much (unfortunately), that’s why your team/cards determine your score. your accuracy, full comboing and all perfecting songs should be more focused on in the rhythm game aspect
    thank you for giving it a chance!

    Tbh i stopped playing because maybe i was doing something wrong but leveling up my cards just took to long for it to be fun.. plus, it's so annoying that people will just disconnect because they didn't get the song they want in co-op. Like,, if you only want to play one specific song play it by yourself??? Right now i play d4dj and sometimes enstars. For some reason the characters in those games are also more interesting to me than the ones in proseka idk

    • @mau1368
      @mau1368  Год назад +1

      There has to be some sort of punishment for quitting coop for not getting a song you wanted tbh that's annoying.
      And yeah you're not alone in levelling up cards, with the energy boost multipliers they're pretty easy to level up at the start but even with them maxed out, you'll hit a point where it'll slow down alot. Having a goldfish attention span didn't help either so I just kinda trudged through it

    • @silverstar7187
      @silverstar7187 Год назад

      @@mau1368Actually, if you disconnect too many times within a time period, the game bans you from going back into Co-Op for a while. If you do it too many times, I'm pretty sure your account can be banned (but it would take a LOT of times to get there)

    The best way to enjoy this game without getting hooked up on all the in game currencies is to skip all the stories, I legit do not know the names of most characters because I know that if I don't form an attachment via the story I will have less reason to obsess over getting 4* of certain characters. I can play the game as much as I want. The score system doesnt matter if you just wanna play a rhythm game. ONLY thing that keeps me back is the Music Cards, because if you want all the songs you need to buy some of them, and you cant buy them with crystals. The events and grinding the ranks etc is the only way. Took me a few days to finally get all of wowaka's songs in the game.

    honestly, the thing that annoys me the most in this game is the concept of sekais itself. i find the whole "emotions giving birth to songs" thing a little underwhelming, because one of my favorite parts of idol franchises is seeing how the characters come up with songs. it's one of the reasons i didn't play the game when it first came out, but i was pleasantly surprised at how catchy some of the music actually is.

    It’s late so I’m not gonna write much but what I will say this as a project sekai player I actually really liked this video. I actually liked how you too a more critical (or cynical) look at the game instead of just saying it’s the best thing in the world (I’m not saying project sekai fans or others are like that tho). I definitely agree with you on your takes on the main stories and specifically LN and Ichika, I get she gets more development in the event stories which is nice but she just stills feels like a nothing burger of a character compared to characters like Tenma, Mafuyu, Mizuki, and Saki and Shiho (I think that’s her name??) from her own band. And when it comes to the story and characters as a whole they just kinda feel…eh. Like just…eh. Excluding the vocaloids the only three characters in the whole cast of characters which I actually like are Mizuki, Haruka, and Mafuyu. Maybe it’s just me but I really don’t see much of the attachment factors in the other characters. I had more to say but maybe I’ll say it later in a different comment.

    • @mau1368
      @mau1368  Год назад +2

      Tbf I haven't finished any of the stories besides LN yet theyre all more interesting to me. I get Ichi is supposed to be a self insert cause she's a huge Miku fan but thats all she has for character in that story. I think the characters are more interesting than the actual stories for the most part, almost none feel like wasted space so far. For something I was expecting complete boredom out of, I enjoyed what I got.
      I wished I talked more about that component of the game but I feel weird knowing thats the longest part of this video tbh
