Judging by internet search history statistics many men and women need this…. Myself included….. how this doesn’t have more views already is astonishing
It truly is possible to break free from that. I was in your shoes, I thought I’d never be able to give that up. But my first confession broke the hold that online material had on me, and through diligence and prayer I’ve removed the rest of the attachments. You can do it too!
Although I used my imagination instead of the internet, confession really helped me overcome self abuse. We quite literally have to run from the urge. When the feeling comes up, physically get up, walk, find something to do, clean dishes, something. Wear a scapular, keep a rosary in your pocket, and pray it everyday. Surround your living space in holy images as a constant reminder. Also, try saying a prayer to St. joseph and St. Raphael for purity that by God's grace, you can break free. Doing these helped me out so hopefully they can help you too.
Fr. Joseph Anthony, meditating on the temptation of the Lord in the wilderness: Temptation happens in isolation.
Thank you, Father Joseph Anthony, and Father Gregory!
I tend to be critical of other people, most especially in my mind. So, sometimes, I find myself nurturing resentment against a certain person by replaying in my mind all the scenes where that person had "failed me". God help me.
Grateful you exist, Fr Gregory 🙏🏼
I have not been tempted to self abusive for a long time. I never looked at anything online but my imagination would get the best of me.
The Latin mass, weight lifting, learning a trade, and prayers, put me to ease me and one day, I hope to marry. I'd love to have a future with one particular girl I know from mass but if it isn't God's will, I'll still be patient. I'll continue being the best I can now for whoever my future wife may be. I pray everyday and night I can make it work with her since I believe we'd be just right for each other but, we'll see. (my mom, grandparents, and even my sister wanted me to pursue her for a while too but I was hesitant because of my sins)
This one passage has also helped me overcome that struggle
I now am taking this kinswoman of mine, not because of lust, but with sincerity. Grant that she and I may find mercy and that we may grow old together. And they both said, "Amen, Amen." - Tobit chapter 8 verse 7-8
The thought of Tobias and Sarah peacefully sound asleep after everyone thought he would surely die, makes me smile and i hope to feel that warmth one day.
I also struggle with my imagination.
It's terrible to be at war with one's own thoughts
@marvalice3455 all we can do is let God reign in our minds as my priest told me. Although It can be hard as we go about regular work and life, God escapes our minds and they wander off.
Father Pine's advice about planting good things in place of the bad thing, in order to win against temptation, has proven true in my own life (5:57-6:10). Overcoming temptation involves more than just refraining from the sinful act. Just trying to grit your teeth and endure the temptation until it passes will not work in the long run. You must fill that void with something positive and wholesome. I have struggled with gluttony all my life, which caused me to gain 100 lbs. over my ideal weight. I yo-yo dieted many times in an attempt to lose the weight to only gain the weight back with a vengeance. Eight years ago, I finally achieved a permanent loss of those 100 lbs, because I did not just rely on cutting calories and white knuckling through the hunger as I did in my past failed attempts. Rather, I replaced the bad junk food that amplified my gluttonous behavior with nutrient dense whole foods, and this facilitated both the weight loss and weight maintenance.
So edifying. Delivery is excellent. And hilarious. Great balance. Do you have any Dominican nun friends who can organize a women's retreat with hiking and cliff jumping? Heck, I'll organize it if they can direct it.
Finally a video from Pints on how to deal!
This is gold - I’m going to take your advice Father, and ‘crowd out’ sources of temptation 👍
I did not really understand this very well but it sounded like it was good. I don't know why I did not understand it. I understand temptation and salvation. And sanctification is a thing I am learning about. I understand asking God to help me through temptation. Well, thank you.
Great video 🙏
Thank you ❤
very good video
Really appreciate this video.
What are the kinds of thing that tempt us?
Things we desire of course, because if we didn’t desire them they wouldn’t tempt us.
Satan therefore tempts us with the things we desire. Therefore the things we desire ain't necessarily good for us.
Jesus tells us to deny ourselves every day. How can Jesus be so cruel, right? Isn’t He supposed to love us?
I can see why God says, `My ways are not your ways’. And why Jesus says `The way to salvation is hard.'
If temptation comes from the "heart" does that mean the person is already sinning? For example, if you really want to do something that's sinful but you don't do it, didn't you technically already do it in your "heart" because you wanted it?
No, wanting to sin and actually following up on that desire are two different things
It’s a sin to allow the temptation to continue, to allow yourself to continue to desire it.
Matthew 5:28 - "But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."
Based on Jesus' exhortation, simply a man's lusting over a woman who is not his wife is tantamount to adultery even though he never even touches her. So the answer to your question is yes.
Simply being attracted to an idea is not a sin. Even if the idea of something sinful.
But dwelling on a sinful idea is a sin
Did you entertain the thought? Did you covet? If no, then you did not commit sin in your heart.
Or, if you said a prayer. . .especially one of praise and thanksgiving. . .then you also did not sin in that moment of temptation.
Eg. Lord, bless your son and thank you for this daughter of Yours. May she be blessed and we both be kept in Your hands.
