A character from season 1 that nobody really cared for, a typical bad guy that only looked out for himself. Yet, this time it would be different. Lets get into why the surprising actions of Mayfeld created one of the best moments in the series...

This is a perfect example of what the series like the Mandalorian and Andor had time to do right where the movies would cut content like this due to time constraints.
Both the prequel and sequel trilogy movies tried to squeeze way too much into far too little time. They often sacrificed plot and character development for big action sequences. Action sequences are important, but they need to serve the narrative, not replace it.
And it’s this kind of stuff right here in this clip that makes you care about the characters.

Season 1 and 2 of the Mandalorian were good. The Mayfield episode of season 1 was awesome. Bill Burr played himself in the Star Wars galaxy so of course he's one of the best things about the show.
The points Mayfield makes and the themes he introduces, that you've highlighted here, are interesting but in usual Disney fashion, they're surface level and never explored or expanded upon again.
So, people reacting to the meandering and incomprehensible third season have become prevalent. It doesn't mean these episodes and ideas are underrated and underappreciated. It just means that the lack of direction they took with the show spoiled what we had, to the point where the whole thing becomes irrelevant or at least tainted. Meaning if you go back and start watching the mandalorian again the knowledge of the bad later episodes is always nagging in the back of your mind.
This is also going to contribute to the failure of the movie. But that's outside the scope of this essay.

I remember watching that scene and being completely awestruck by both the writing and acting. Westerns are my favourite genre of fiction and in that moment, I think Star Wars was the most like a western not with a pistol duel or showdown but watching a man who lives his life a certain way take a stand he doesn't expect due to his in the past during a war. Favreau certainly seems to get westerns and wants to emphasise the western aspect of Star Wars and I'm here for it!

And when Burr's character shot that officer, I nutted a bit while imagining it was Dick Cheney. Not kidding, I thought his character's lines had more thought provoking dialogue than most political bs nowadays. I mean, I was over there for love of country, but there were never any wmd's. Dick Cheney and friends convinced Bush, the military, the country, and the world that there were wmds there bc it made them rich. No one talks about it. Most guys I served with just dont want to talk about it, or they deny it, or they get mad and really deny it and call us traitors for speaking up for our fallen brothers and sisters. And no one ever addresses it bc it is too scary or... i dont know. But no one talks about it really. And the idea of my friends and I being abused for money and power while millions of innocents die in the process.....Yeah, when Burr's character shot that officer it hit me different. Bc I felt the same. It was a huge artistic victory in my book bc Burr might have just been playing a character, and it may have just been good writing, but honestly that was some serious truth telling. This was amazing.

I think Pascal does a master class for a character that wears a uniform to hide his emotion and humanity. Burr's character is my number 2 though, I do think the writers and him add an awful lot to the star wars franchise. Mayfeld shooting the imperial officer is very reminiscent of Micheal Corleone shooting the cop and the mobster at the dinner in ‘The Godfather’. You see in his face and eyes his mind racing with doubt and contempt until he shoots. Great acting and writing.

When his face drops, right before he shoots, when he made the decision without knowing he made the decision or what he was doing.
All portrayed very well in his face.
    Great acting.

It should also be mentioned that din djarin didn’t even reprimand or get mad at mayfeld for shooting the officer.
Like he respected that or he just didn’t blame him.

people definitely talked about this when it came out
but what i dont see people talk about right now is the fact that season 2 was a step up and a masterpiece next to a fair 9/10 season 1
everyone seems to have gotten collective amnesia and apply the brilliance of s2 to s1 and say "the series was going down with each season" which i simply not true and im really confused at those statements

This is the type of Star Wars storytelling I want to see more off, but Disney wont let that, Andor is the only place else were they did such things.

No more Mayfeld until Disney runs the show. I don't want to see his character thrown in the trash. But later, I will love to see him more.

Edit: I don't know if this was intentional but from these clips it looks like Bill is left eye dominant. This means he is looking through the scope with his left eye but he is still holding the rifle right handed. This is most likely because he is right handed, though many on many fire arms (most) the bolt action is on the right hand side. However laser rifles do not have bolt actions. So I now wonder if Bill hunts or goes to the range in real life.
