I really don't agree that wedge/wedge matches are automatically boring. Vladiator and Diesector put on some fantastic matches back in the day. Their first one got a "THREE MORE MINUTES" chant from the crowd.
ImportAustralia Neither one of those robots were pure wedge robots... Vladiator had a lifting arm and Diesector had 2 hammers plus his claw (didn't even have a wedge at all...). The boring fights are pure wedge robots like Original Sin.
ImportAustralia A lifting arm is a moving part. Making it completely different than a wedge. In the same sense that a mounted stake on front is different than a crossbow. Same effect; different function to cause the effect. The bot's strategy being to flip opponents over isn't what spectators find boring. Sewer Snake for instance impresses me despite being a wedge bot. the fact that he's built to flip himself around with his ramps adds a lot of "trick-shot" maneuvers (for lack of a better term) to his fighting style. I think what spectators find boring is when it's just a plain ramp-with-wheels vs another plain ramp-with-wheels. At least when it's nothing more than watching robots roll over each other like ramps.
ImportAustralia A better example though would be Vladiator vs Maximus. That was exciting because they weren’t just lightly touching one another with pitty-patty-shoves; they were slamming and tossing each other around with immense speed and power. Same case can be made for the Devil's Plunger/Max Wedge saga.
remeber that blade broke of metal fatigue. it had already taken so many hits from previous matches. normally the whole robot would be torn apart before that blade would brake.
But Now In Battlebots Fight Night In Las Vegas, Ray Billings And His Battlebot Tombstone, Had A Rematch And Won By Judges Decision Over Gary Jin And His Battlebot Free Shipping!
thats a pretty big disadvantage making Last Rites turn around at the beginning like that. Had both bots been facing each other ORiginal Sin might not have gunned it straight forward so quickly to start and this might have started much differently..
Last Rites is the only exciting bot in this league. A design that isn't a wedge and causes some actual damage with entertainment value. Please ban wedges.
Roberto Richardson I hear ya. No robot battle is more boring than two wedge bots. In almost every case it's just a matter of which wedge is lower to the ground; lower wins. Back when I watched Battlebots it'd actually piss me off if it was a Wedge vs wedge episode because that felt like an entire episode was wasted. But with Combots it's just as simple as checking the next youtube video. That said... I don't think banning wedges would be realistic even if they're pretty boring to watch.
***** Oh yeah I totally get that. They're very practical. If you're playing to win it's the way to play according to the finals. No exposed moving parts aside for wheels (if that). Seemingly often high armor and high power - there's a lot of space and weight that weapons use up, so I imagine a wedge saves in that area and doubles as a shield and weapon as well. But I'm not really debating if it's practical or useful. it's undeniable that they're probably the most useful robots since so many favor them. But they're also usually boring to spectate. No more interesting than watching two people ram any two normal RC cars into each other. Not, like, TV worthy. You know? People think of robot fighting and they think of battle damage. Wedge-bots hardly ever cause that. It's just the inner childish nerd in us thinking "ROBOT FIGHT! EXPLOSIONS! FIRE! TWISTED METAL! WRECKAGE!" Know what I mean?
Aasha There are two other advantages weaponless robots have that aren't so obvious: They're the least expensive kind to make, and they're also the safest to test. For these reasons, that makes wedges, plows, and rambots ideal first bots to make and to use. I personally am excited for any kind of robot combat duel; the only type of robots I don't like seeing are individual ones that win too much (like Hazard or Behemoth) or ones where the operator is a jerk (Ray Billings looks like a nice guy in these videos, but he comes off as a heel in the 2015 BattleBots competition; I'm guessing that's ABC's editing making him appear that way). My favorites to see winning are rookies and/or underdogs, and I don't care what kinds they are.
Well if I'm really honest as long as the fight is interesting I can enjoy it. It's just that most wedge bot fights aren't. There have been a couple I found fun though. Sewer Snake especially. A wedgebot? Sure. Those agile twists and flips make it feel like watching a performer though. I don't pay much mind to the drivers themselves.
Wow, wait a minute... Last Rites facing the wall? Safety standarts - ok. But after everyone left the arena? Couldn't it be spinned during that kind of warming up they usually do? It seem unfair to me, Last Rites starts the match turning to face Original Sin, which simply had to run asap and blast against Last Rites... and that's what makes it hit the wall. If both robots had run to the center, that wouldn't have happened.
I'm not sure that Last Rites started facing the wall because of safety standards. I think it's a strategy used by the driver Ray Billings to buy "extra-time" to spin up his weapon to full speed. Competitors with spinning weapons are not allowed to start spinning their weapon until the countdown timer ends its sequence. It's very easy to stop a weapon from spinning up when it hasn't built up sufficient rotational inertia, so the first thing Original Sin was looking to do was hit Last Rites' weapon early on before it could become very dangerous. Last Rites was trying to simultaneously avoid Original Sin's initial charge and spin his weapon up as quickly as possible. It almost worked, but running into the arena wall must have put a very well-placed stress into the blade, making it crack in half. It may seem like a "cheap" win, but a lot of wedge/rammer strategy depends on forcing weapon failure for their opponents and then dominating in the subsequent pushy-battle.
Rob Grassi The announcers said it was for safety reasons, not intentional strategy, (last rites gets to full speed in 2 seconds anyway, so why do it any other way)
Rob Grassi thats more, anything that isnt a spinner or overhead, and overhead can just lose if someone built, lets saaaaaay a beta blocker, but noone would spoil the fun a- oh wait
...And probably one of the FEW opponents that presents no real weakness towards Last Rites. WOW, that blade broke so easily- the metal must have already been fatigued to the point of fracture from previous battle. And thus LR/Tombstone's biggest weakness, lose that weapon and you're done for. Original Sin is a TANK, but no active weapon-which I'm glad Battlebots made having an active weapon a requirement for entry. But yeah, LR/TS is my favorite fighting robots, but by no means are they totally unstoppable-close, though! ;)
So basically a box on wheels with a wedge is the best robot of them all, seriously? they the most boring and most uninspiring, it just seem they cannot stop a robot that look like a box even without a weapon lol, if that is true then why just copy the same box disign to win more battles?
I actually like this Combots low key video coverage. It’s nice to see the competitors personalities and ideas more up close.
i loved combots! definitely one of my core memories watching all of these robots as a kid with my friends.
Alright, Last Rites vs. Original Sin, who's gonna-- *SNAP* --oh, it's this one.
Not even 5 seconds into the fight and its already over man. :l

Mat DeAngelis The entire match was just them ramming into each other and pushing each other, though, and lifting arm is a more effective wedge, so...

+ImportAustralia Wedge vs. wedge matches are only fun if you have two AMAZING drivers going at it. Otherwise, boring.

There's nothing to gain by doing that. Unlike Robot Wars or Battlebots, Combots wasn't televised.
Last Rites/Tombstone worst enemy is itself !
Holy shit, super cool to see Steven Felk again.
I like how they include the contestants in the ending credits...not sure why...just like it. Credit, where credit is due. Kriton.
remeber that blade broke of metal fatigue. it had already taken so many hits from previous matches. normally the whole robot would be torn apart before that blade would brake.
Before anyone knew what Tombstone was.
ROFL yeah

Pretty sure rey did that on purpose so original sin couldn't hit the blade as fast and stop it
what no picture of the wall last rites hit?
i love that at 1:22 in to the video they tell you who won it all by saying original sin won 4 and 5 this video is for cup 5
yeah aluminum is bends and dents before shattering. Brittle is to fracture
I love bot fights

Aasha There are a lot of pure wedges because they are very useful though. They're plain, but they're practical. They're function over form.

holy hell last rites is strong! nice match guys
Did you see the match? Last rites got pushed around like a ragdoll
steel more brittle than aluminium?
Free shipping vs tombstone :D
Better free shipping vs worst tombstone
Both Original Sin and (at least the heavyweight) Tombstone came far before Battlebots' Free Shipping and Tombstone
And now that is actually happening.
@@ChaosBlitzBeta who would expect rematch at battlebots ? im looking forward to see it.
dose look like steve dosent it
Hi Felk :3
3:41
7:24 is that Steve Jobs?
Nah!
Ray Billings should put some kind of wedge on his similar designed & current Tombstone. Just 4 occassions like this.

Danielle Flannery thats the vast majority of spinners. Also they shouldnt make shoving a defencive mover
I smell Sabotage... possibly for the sake of showmanship....
