Thank you for posting this. I live on Maui, and I see this kind of thing happen all the time to unsuspecting tourists. It's nice that there are warning signs all along the hike, but it would be even nicer if permanent stories like this could be posted along the way. The signs do state "fatalities," but they do not state how those fatalities have occurred. To me, that gives a little extra permission to those who think "it'll never happen to me" when they don't have any idea of knowing that "it" is. Glad you made it out safely. Pipiwai is a gorgeous hike.
Thank you so much for your comment! It is so true. We weren’t going to go past the sign but then we saw some locals go so we thought it would be okay. We were lucky and we know that if we can even convince one person to not go past the sign it was worth sharing. Still an absolutely beautiful hike that we totally recommend!!!!
Was just there last week and watched a younger couple undress and get under the waterfall for insta-selfies session for a good 45min. Then a elderly couple came and asked them for pictures under the waterfall. My g/f and I sat about 150 feet away on the creek edge and enjoyed the waterfall without taking the chance of ending our beautiful Maui trip early and on a sad note. As a rock climber I could clearly recognize the rockfall danger in that area let alone that of flash floods. Darwin/ Nature just seems to work this sorta stuff out on it's own.
Thanks for posting the video. Many people go past that because they hiked all that time to get to that point and they feel entitled to see the falls close up. The sign is there for a reason. They didn't post that sign to take away your enjoyment. I have been there many times, sometimes there is a very small stream to cross, and sometimes it is a really deep stream. Don't go into that stream if it is that deep, you may end up in deep trouble! If there are boulders and you are standing on one, it wasn't put there by someone, it fell! I wish they would build a small perch, or a lookout spot that is taller at that point so people can get a better angle of the waterfall. Obey the signs! People think stats do not include them. They do. Glad you didn't get hit by that boulder. Beautiful hike.
You should see the infinity pool on the top of those falls, the coolest (can be dangerous too) place in the world. The old Maui Revealed book used to detail how to get up there.
Also I believe there was a book written bunches of years ago that called Hawaiian islands one of the most dangerous places to visit. When signs are posted believe why. Go see the beauty but do not venture close. Unfortunately the beauty can be a deadly thing
easy hike, family type. No steep hills but if you have young kids, you can't let them run alone. Some areas are dangerous, only a sign will warn you from falling in a deep ravine.
Ben my matey, glad ye didn't end up in Davy Jones locker by the hand of the waterfall goddess! We pirates be a bit of a superstitious bunch but we think she was either trying to kill you or give you a great souvenir for visiting the falls to show on RUclips. She be a fickle goddess! Dead men tell no tales so be mindful of the warning signs that ye come across as ye explore. If ye see goddess Pele, let her know this pirate deeply appreciates her gifts of volcanic rocks that me sister brought back from the dominion of her fire palace. Your videos are making this pirate want to cross that place off the bucket list so very badly! Stay safe!
I hope your sister hasn't had bad luck since she brought that volcanic rock off the island. There is a lot of superstition around that! Apparently Hawaii gets tons of volcanic rock shipped back to them every year to try to get rid of the curse. We visited this waterfall about 4 years ago and there were a lot of people hanging out, standing directly under the water and on the rocks. We'd had such a good time we were really looking forward to doing it again this time, but thankfully we made it out okay. There was a weird, unsettling feeling being there this time, and then the rock fell. We definitely learned our lesson.
Konkin Can Do I told my sister to send me only the Chinese made knock offs of the Tiki gods made of volcanic rock. Apparently it is volcanic rock is sent to China to be manufactured into small Tiki gods so the Chinese get the curse!
Should be bigger fines than $100.00. These fines can surely help the economy. Hold tourists accountable for disregarding the warning signs. Remember, the park rangers do not want to rescue busted up bodies
Lmao what? Nobody is native to anywhere. Real Hawaiian “natives” believe that. And that’s why Hawaii is so welcoming to tourists for the most part. But nature will always be nature. Mysterious, dangerous and not to be messed with unless your openly accepting of the reaction of your actions. Luck has nothing to do with it. And who is doing the blessings that is also biased?🤔 Sounds like wishful thinking…

People don't obey signs.
Beautiful falls! This was a great lesson for others, it was awesome of you to share it!
Thank you Lynne! We were really scared when it happened...I still think about it all the time.
Don’t forget to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you every day. We are lucky to be alive. Don’t be stupid like us.

Starts @ 4:48 for those who are impatient like me. 😁

Squish Warren agreed. We followed a bunch of locals in and were fast shown the reason for the sign. Just glad to be okay.
Keep in mind what happened at Sacred Falls on Oahu years back, when Hiking near any steep canyon waterfall in Hawaii.
Awesome video 🤙
Nice! Where you guys got the cap? They looks nice ;-)

How is the hike as far as endurance?

So glad I was able to spend years experiencing Maui before jerks like this started showing up...

LOL! Well I hope nobody gets cursed, but I am glad to hear you had a work around.

Always going to be disrespectful and ignorant hard-headed individuals no matter the cost, no matter the dangers no matter where
Locals were rolling rock T them to leave.🤙
woah
You're lucky.
You're complete fools.
you pay the fine? since you broke the law or just happy to be alive (sic)
Jester435 no fine was issued but would have paid it happily after all of this.
That's our ancestors telling you, you don't belong there. Which is why we always say follow ALL signs posted. Natives have blessings to be there.
OH SHUT UP SARAH! You ain’t nothing like your ancestors!
