I have been dehumanized my entire life. Particularly when I was younger a kid with an Islamic name , with 9/11 fresh on everyone’s mind .
Belonging to an ethnicity (Somali ) & immigrant background that had high hostility towards it .
The stigma of being a poor male for so long & all the pain & hurdles ,
The hell i went through with having an undiagnosed neurological
    Problems for decades
Hell there have been times last year , when I was asked myself
Are you less then human ?
Luckily I recovered from my trauma & I’m doing great this year , taking classes , writing ( hopefully soon for a publication) starting several ventures,

How do look at another human beings skin colour and immediately feel afraid of them. The indigenous people are all but ignored as if they do not exist and we're initially described as lesser than human by early leaders of this country. As a subscriber to David's weekday and bonus shows, I have to say this was among the very best of the many excellent interviews I have seen. I'm delighted to find it posted on RUclips so I can share it.
My opinion on how to "resist" dehumanization comes after years of asking that question. We need to spend far more time that most do in the process called "self-reflection." Raised as a Roman Catholic, I first got a taste of this as a second-grader preparing for my first confession -- in the process known as "examination of conscience." Which, of course, is tied to learning the difference between wrong and right.
Later in life, I would find out that other cultures engaged in this practice as a routine, especially in Asia. A really terrific documentary where this was done in a prison in Alabama is called "The Dhamma Brothers." (2007). thank you, again.

  • @AmaraJordanMusic

A lot of my older relatives (in the south) want to act like racism has nothing to do with them and civil rights dealt with it all long ago. But... my dad spent his summers on land that STILL had some slave cabins up, he’d play hide and seek with other kids around them. Because various slaves “stayed on” after slavery was abolished, he believed the idea that his ancestors were “some of the good ones, treated them very well.” But I saw less than a dozen black people until I was 16 years old, the neighborhoods were still starkly segregated when I left the small town I grew up in, and there are still towns in my state that people kind of... just need to drive through.
I have a friend who passes as white and every time he goes on vacation and uses the road going through one of those towns, he’s as careful as possible and tries to get out promptly, because of a pretty unnerving incident he had about a decade ago. They told him to put the town in his rear view and never come back, because his kind wasn’t wanted. And that was “the law.” I can’t imagine.
We like to think we’re so much smarter, kinder, more evolved than people were just a few generations ago. But even those with malice in their hearts know how to smile when it’s called for, and others are far too trusting.

  • @NathanAMeyers
    @NathanAMeyers 3 года назад

I agree with this quite dramatically. Dehuminization is not an all out evil. Just like all things, people gradually build up perspectives that cause them to act poorly. Dehumanization in ww2 was justified by appealing to an amalgam of long held religious beliefs. But nonetheless it made sense to them at the time. We cannot blame the corporate evil, or the right, or the religious, or the non-religious. We must, instead, truly know why we hate the things we do.
There is no such thing as an act that on its own is a sin or is terrible. It is only terrible when the trajectory of our perception is never challenged. We shoot off at a constant velocity and never gravitate back towards earth. This is a problem of our unabashed culture of "tolerance", but tolerance in this manner is less about being polite, and more about perpetuating the cultural stigma surrounding opinions. And that stigma only exists because of a failed education system that doesn't always inform people the crucial differences between an educated opinion and an uneducated one; and that even if your educated opinions are challenged, this is not an attack of you - its an attack of an idea.
Interestingly, this education crisis is in trouble primarily because uneducated people have a large say in how our education system is run. (Religious approval of appealing to authority as well as discouraging doubt is a huge factor) Its a cyclical issue that needs direct action from confident legislation.

It’s a division that goes back to the Civil War. You view yourselves as the Union, the side that won, and they are the Confederates, the side that lost. These are different national groups with different national identities. The KKK/white supremacy shit is not American fascism; it’s Confederate fascism.
That doesn’t mean America doesn’t have its own style of fascism though.

I disagree with you. Its not about power. Humans DO NOT naturally humanize each other, its a learned behavior. Children raised in isolation, or children living in violent conditions rarely acquire emapthy. Infact the opposite occurs, in these cases the child will require years of therapy to learn the social skills needed to connect with others in any meaningful way. People with power use dehumanization, but it isnt exclusive to the powerful.
