It's not necessarily that but it's more of the fact that a lot of these things are international and with the Internet and stuff like Facebook or Twitter you would hear these things more often. Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona, Barca, Madrid, etc. are all names you hear or read most of the time on the Internet. It's more of a matter of ignorance. Most people won't know American football because it's usually exclusively American and most people outside of the US can't stand the high amount of commercials.
