  • In the fall of 2023, CCM Wind Studies presented two unforgettable nights of music featuring internationally recognized guest composer John Mackey. In this video, the CCM Wind Symphony performs Mackey's "Wine-Dark Sea." CCM faculty member Kevin Michael Holzman conducts.
The epic symphony tells the tale of Odysseus' journey after the Trojan War. Mackey explains, “Homer called the ocean on which Odysseus sailed a wine-dark sea, and for the Greek king it was as murky and disorienting as its name; he would not find his way across it without first losing himself.”

I'll never forget this concert. It was my first time ever playing bass clarinet, and I couldn't have had a better first bass piece. Mackey wrote such an engaging part, and the piece, along with "Songs from the End of the World." This concert meant a lot to me, and I'm grateful I get to relive it as many times as I wish, thanks to this recording.
