  • Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (August 15, 1925 - December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, but simply "O.P." by his friends. He released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.
This exclusive performance with master violonist Stephane Grappelli (26 January 1908 - 1 December 1997) was recorded at the AVRO TV Grand Gala du Disque 1974. The introduction is by famous Dutch TV host Willem Duys. It took place at the RAI hall, Amsterdam on 15 February 1974.
    A true gem!

Heard Oscar live in London in 1984 at the Barbican. I heard Stephane Grappelli at the 100 Club in Oxford Street, he'd have been about 80 then but was in great form. Two giants of jazz for sure. Oscar Peterson's rendition of Body and Soul at the beginning is so like Art Tatum in style, Tatum had a huge influence on Peterson.

Oscar laid down such power and flow that many were inspired by such freedom.
Johnny Costa who played the piano on the mister Rogers show had some of this great jazz flexibility that flooded my ears for years.
Great blessings and love to all the younger people who are able to enjoy this dynamic flow of musical prowess. 🎶🔥

Sencillamente, ... para un aspirante a músico ( Violinista ) ... escuchar a este par de " monstruos musicales " es casi un placer al oído y sobre todo lleva mucha alegría y swing ... a nuestro corazón y a nuestro espíritu ....

I loved watching him on his Tv show in the seventies when he would have a guest artist, I’m sure Stevie was on once. My eldest Son, who is a brilliant jazz pianist (I’m bound to say that I know) has named his first child Oscar.
At my Son’s 18th Birthday party (quite a few years ago) his friend and my other Son DJ’d for the evening. I just placed two vinyls on the decks and sat down as they played, one was a recording of Rudyard Kipling’s ‘If’ and the other that complimented the poem perfectly was an instrumental dub version of ‘Autumn Leaves’ by Cold Cut. Listening to this has just connected these things together in a beautiful way.

The video being flipped is inspired! It is a total reveal of the Left Handed orientation of the modern piano!
Any guitarist can look at this and see the right hand strumming and the left hand dancing on the keys!
The piano is revenge for all the Leftys that were forced to learn to write right handed, and really shows why so few can sing and play!
Note, nearly all of the greatest pianists were Left Handed: Bach, Tatum, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Evans, Mozart(ambidextrious), Geiseking. Did I leave anyone out? Oh yeah, Costa, Liberachi, and Oh Yeah, O. P!
