  • An introduction to perhaps the best preserved and most dramatic of all Manx keeills, the earliest Christian buildings in the Isle of Man.
When Christianity first arrived on the Isle of Man in the 6th Century, small chapels were built all over the Island. These keeills today might look to some like primitive buildings in remote locations - suggesting a hermit-existence for the priest - but it is not that simple...
By looking at the landscape and setting, as well as the physical remains, we begin to understand the keeills like Lag ny Keeilley in new and revealing ways.
Andrew Johnson (Field Archaeologist at Manx National Heritage) here explains the site, some of its key features and what we might learn of life of those people who lived or visited this site hundreds of years ago.
This film has been produced by Culture Vannin to accompany the book co-authored by Andrew Johnson and published in 2017:
'A Guide to the Archaeological Sites of the Isle of Man'
Meayll Circle is amongst the 82 sites from the 17 parishes featured in the book.

Thank you for doing the video and giving the information. Brought back pleasant memories of being out that way.
I had spent many an hour out that way and often went along the coast swimming between the rock outcrops.
Spent time laying within the stone walls and wondering what it was that someone had built only the sound of the waves, wind, animals and insects to hear. The sound of a black face munching, moving nearby and the stamp of warning on seeing me.
Never met others except for a group who wanted to find the cave down on the beach within which was conglomerate part of a geographic fault line.
White spar pebbles - lots found in the last known lived in thatched cottage by the side of the Ballacallin pub. The fire area had been filled in, when removing the fill in on the lhs when facing the fire was an alcove within which were numerous white spar pebbles.laid on the floor. With the fill gone and the original fire place exposed one could stand inside and see the sky up through the sooty stones. Often found groups of white spar pebbles in hedges good to look at and long enough time ago free to take from the river or beach, a memento of a walk, mystery of roundness, maybe.

Very instructive indeed. Wish I had watched it when I was still able to walk there! Many thanks for a lovely film of a special place.
