This has been on RUclips for years, but somehow I've never seen this video before. So many rich associations and complex feelings are evoked by all these films! Not just the masterpieces, but the minor films and even the rare failures have great individual moments. I'm just so fucking grateful for this artist, and that I was able to see all his work and to learn to love and appreciate it.
I recently watched Drunken Angel on Tubi. I hadn't watch it in a long time. It is probably considered one of his "minor" films but even when he is telling a small story it still has an epic quality to it. Mifune's death scene is every bit as tragic as that in Throne of Blood. He gives such a great performance. It is more subdued than in Seven Samurai or Yojimbo. It is a little closer to his performance in Red Beard, my personal favourite of Kurosawa's films. It took me a long time to finally get around to watching it. I was not captivated by the story of a 19th century medical clinic with a three hour run time. I was so wrong in that opinion and became absolutely engrossed in the story and of these characters, especially the titular one who is trying to teach a new young doctor the importance of the clinic and the service to the impoverished community. The most moving moment is when they save a young girl from a certain life of prostitution. She becomes in a young boy whose family who are experiencing a great hardship. The film has no great plot and is a series of sequences in the lives of these people. I loved it.
@GREG FREEMAN I didn't watch Redbeard for the same reasons, I want to check it out now. Kurosawa is one of my favorite directors so I need to finish his filmography.
@@comradejosephstalinoftheus8698 By all means finish it, Comrade Stalin. You won't regret it and you probably won't be such a mean dictator afterwards.
@@comradejosephstalinoftheus8698 Not exactly free, but if you subscribe to the Criterion Channel online, you can see not only Red Beard, but nearly all of Kurosawa's work.
I wish he had ventured into science fiction. Not the hard sci-fi of Star Wars but something more mythical like Dune. He would have been an ideal director for that story and would find a balance between the human and mythological aspects of the story. We almost got a Kurosawa Godzilla film but Toho Studio feared the cost that came along with one of his films and it sadly never happened. We can only imagine what he might have brought to the series.
I don't know if you know but Star Wars is heavily inspired by Kurosawa and it's so much more mythical than Dune. It's a modern myth that is a blend of Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Eastern & Western cultures, so I think Kurosawa will definitely be fit for Star Wars, as it is inspired from his work.
Lucas basically ripped off The Hidden Fortress. It's actually my least favourite of Kurosawa's films. The two comical characters get very annoying after a while. You can certainly see the origins of R2-D2 and C3-PO. But the whole first Star Wars film was almost a total remake. In his wildest dreams Lucas will never be another Akira Kurosawa. I recently rewatched Ran and it blew me away.
