I still remember the very day my Dad and i heard Mojo had signed for Rangers.....nostalgic memories and a great era for Rangers and the fans.
Brilliant signing for us in so many ways!
Take a shot everytime wee Ian says Now 😂😂🥃🥃
Im a non-catholic Celtic fan and was a kid at the time but remember being more upset not because of any religious or political hurt, but Johnston had been paraded in a Celtic shirt by Billy McNeil and that's what really hurt and offended many Celtic fans more than any political nonsense. Celtic needed players that summer as I think we had lost the bulk of our 1988 centenary title winning team and Rangers were really strong already. For me, it was the betrayal of Billy who is the only Scot to lift the European Cup for a Scottish team. Can Rangers fans imagine Walter Smith or John Greig being betrayed by an iconic player like McCoist or Durrant? Had Celtic not paraded Johnston a few weeks earlier then I think there would have been far much less shock and anger from Celtic fans. For me that's my memory of it. Johnston though clearly has some balls making this move, but was it really worth it for him. He publicly betrayed Billy and he can never take that back.
What a signing by Souness. It was like a dagger in every Celtic supporters heart. One of the best ever signings by Rangers.
100% agree Scot!
Who are you kidding? The rangers fans were sick to their stomach over it.
@@AC-ge9zq Those ones were not fans. There is another word for that lot
@@scotireland3087 yup bigots
M8 as a celt that was totally gutted I have an unusual opinion about it, looking back now it was the BEST THING THAT HAPPENED to celtic, if he had resigned we would've won the odd cup, the bare minimum to keep the Kelly's and whytes in power, from that day on the clock was ticking on the board and though it took nearly 4 years that was the exact moment we realised the old board weren't interested in competing with rangers, so (with hindsight) I thank the little basar. I'm not saying I STILL wouldn't like to kick him in the baws, but it turned out for the best
Mo was class
Sensational striker!
Mo Johnston is a legend, signing for Rangers as the first Catholic was a huge middle finger to the sectarianism that has plagued Glasgow for too long. He just didn't have any time or respect for it.
Wee Mo was an absolutely fantastic signing for us.Loved him
Enjoyed his time so much he had to move to Canada to live a normal life outside Fitbaw
I have the same first name as Ian and the same birthday 🔴⚪️🔵
Let’s be honest it was a shock !! But to see them parade him with that rag on next time Souness walks into the blue room with Mojo they must have been going Mad!! Took some bottle to do that especially as he was a glasgow boy!🔴⚪️🔵👍
Good watch but i think it must have been Gary Stevens who booted Mo as Butcher never played in the Rous Cup game that year.
Thanks for the support Aldo!
Celtic fan, remember at the time I was raging that he could turn his back on Celtic and sign for Rangers, Celtic were,nt known for spending money what with the biscuit tin mentality at that time and Johnston was on fire at the time so obviously it was money orientated but what he did really was a shock in Glasgow and beyond but good on Graeme Souness for kicking it off and trying to break down sectarian barriers.
Big ian was so class for 😢rangers
Durrant was some player
Top class player
World class striker on his day!
Super maurice Johnston
🇬🇧💙
As a Celtic fan I didn’t like this at the time.
But I respect Graeme souness for signing a Catholic player, because rangers had a shameful unwritten no Catholic policy at the time.
33 years ago now. The time has flown.
what's an unwritten policy, other than an oxymoron?
Remember it well, great signing for Rangers, people forget wee MAURICE was a tough wee fella, a lot of Rangers fans came around to him once they knew what he could do...🎉
Loved it , Bigots burning and ripping up season tickets and ditching shirts 🤣
😂😂
Mo's dad was a Rangers fan, I always thought he was a superb signing & he proved he was. Who cares in reality what religion we are? It isn't important, playing for Rangers however, is. 💙
“He just didn’t seem to care?”
Obviously you don’t remember his first Old Firm game for Rangers at Parkhead and how rattled he was.
We mo wasclass for rangers
I dont care if we sign a Pakistani as long we win the league😂
