Thanks for sharing. MLCS makes a few router bits that simplify the end profiling and ensure a smooth rail slot (7309, 7310 & 7311). Maple and Beech can be found at Rockler and local lumber retailers in 1/2" thickness for track that matches commercially available track. A 3/32" roundover bit on the outside track edges is a nice finishing detail (Amana MR0110) too.
Can we get some clarification on what the first step is? (Besides buying the wood haha) how are you cutting in the wheel slots? What machinery and tools do we need?
Using a piece of the original track I found a router bit that matches the diameter of the wheel slots. I then used the original track to space out my cuts on the wood so they would match, then using my router and a fence I cut the grooves in for the wheels. For the puzzle piece connection on the ends I used a matching drill bit and a dremal tool to make them but read the comments some people had suggestions to do that part easier.
Nice job but you should consider a CNC machine, or 3D printer, you could crank a lot of them in a fraction of the time it takes to do it by hand one by one. Or simply buy a kit of 100 pieces for $50. Consider if you make $25-50/hr., the cost of 100 pcs commercially made is way worth it. I am sure it took you at least a few hrs. to make a set of 4 straights and, by hand, the fit is never perfect.
Glad you enjoyed the video, you are correct it would be faster and easier to use a cnc machine or something but the thing is i was not mass producing them, I just wanted to make a few for my son and it was a fun little project for my garage :)
I’m not sure, the only Thomas my son has is a push version that looks like the black engine in the thumbnail for this video. That push version of Thomas does work on these tracks. Hope that helps.
Nice video and great instructions. Thanks. GOD bless you.
Glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the info, here I am doing it the old fashioned way :)
I commend you for the amount of work you put into the puzzle piece part. No way I’m gonna have time to do all that lol
It was a fun project so my son could expand his train town.
So cool😍
👍
Nice! Is it possible if you can show us a tutorial on how to make custom wooden trains?
Glad you enjoyed it but I didn’t make any trains I just made track pieces to expand my sons set.
Cuando terminé el circuito, mi hijo había crecido y pidió una Nintendo :-)
Oh que lastima!

Is it compatible with Thomas wooden railway
