I love that you make mistakes and do not edit them out. That is just awesome! Thank you for that. You are human, just like the rest of us. I love it. Thank you.
I agree with you~I almost exclusively knit all my socks using DK weight !! I learned using DK,,then switched to sock weight, and wasn't nearly as impressed. So I went back to DK,,which has always been my comfort zone anyway~gimme DK yarn and 3.75mm needles and I'm a happy, happy girl lol~!!🧶🥢
Your technique is gorgeous! I'm an advanced beginner who had been working continental, with the working yarn in my left hand. the way you hold your yarn seems beautifully efficient. Thank you for a clear and helpful video.
I found some 9 inch circulars and I was so excited. Of course I immediately came to your channel! Your video is awesome and you are, as always, so helpful and a joy to watch.
Thank you so much! You have solved by Christmas Gift dilemma. Thanks to this tutorial it's going to be socks for all! I'm saving money by working down my stash of 'nice but not enough for a sweater' yarn and knitting love for family, friends and Homeward Bound. Plus GSR's are THE.BEST.TECHNIQUE.EVER!
I just decided this morning that it's going to be socks for everyone this year for Christmas~!! I'm starting a little late, but luckily I have a lot of free time rn,and am a fairly fast knitter..... How did it work out for you last year ? 🙂🥢🧶
Oh my gosh! Love, love love the provisional cast on version you used. I always end up splitting yarn doing it the other way where you pick up stitches in the back bump. Thank you for sharing this! I'm anxious to cast on just to do it once! :)
thank you very much for this tutorial! I've never used 9" circular needles before. It's very tempting!^^ although , like you said, 9" in big size with chunky yarn are screaming "tendinitis" when I'm looking at you knit like that^^ hehe I'm sure it's way better with little sizes! I want to try!! :) thanks again for your videos that are always really nice!
I finished these in two weeks! Fastest pair I ever made, and I think it’s the circular needles. It really does work up much faster on those needles. I noticed that my toes and heels using the recommended sizes for the DPN’s worked out a little looser so my next pair I will use slightly smaller DPN’s and that may make the gauge the same. I don’t see a way to post a picture of them, so let me know if there is because of course I took one! I made them for my spouse, and he has really wide feet and these came out perfect.
awesome tutorial! I always have issues with knitting socks.... I never finish them.... I probably need to do them in dk first and the afterthought heel!! thank you for showing this
Making and finishing up a pair right now!! Just in time for Christmas! My first pair ever!! I've actually mixed techniques from different videos. I think I'm hooked! I can't wait to try different heel and toe techniques! Thank you so much! #hooked
Martha Reed I mixed and matched a couple of techniques. I did Her German short row toe on DPNs in a contrasting color then switched to a 9' circular for the foot...went back to DPNs for the GSR heel and switched back to the 9' for the leg and cuff. I practiced the heel a couple times first before I broke out my project yarn. It was my first sock so the practice really helped. AND I worked on both of them at the same time. Meaning I worked one toe then worked the second toe. Worked the first foot then worked... Parking the other sock on DPNs. It's easier to make heels back to back instead of forgetting on your second sock... 😊 I'm making a cuff down pair now in fingering weight for my son! It's kind of addicting!
AR Chery Good Morning ! I just want to thank you for your help. I'm getting ready to make a pair. But i was kinda scared. But I'm willing to give it a try. Never used DPNS before either. I'm very new at this. Thanks again.
I haven't done an afterthought heel but I think I will give it a go as I used this technique for a thumbs on mittens. I use the same alternate stretchy bind off too :-)
Oh how did you know this is my year to knit socks exactly this way?????...Thank you for this tutorial...I love your video's and have learned sooooo much from you...
Interesting use for 9” circulars. I prefer magic loop 2 at a time socks. As long as I don’t get the yarn mixed up I’m good hehehe. Takes practice but so far i like it :)
I had watched all your tutorials, and bought the pattern for socks with Gasset. I have knitted ton of socks….and I saw the different starts…now, I used to knit cuff down and now I switched to toe up….and here is my question, based in your experience, which is your preferred sock start… I, now, do loop style sock knitting.
Le voy a hacer este cierre elástico 1 x 1 al final del tubo, a mis primeros calcetines, para dormir, de punta, filas cortas alemanas, lazo mágico, dos a la vez, dos colores, lana de alpaca con agujas número 5. Me encantan!
Just getting various tips while I’m making socks for my great nephew who’s on the way. I’m always mesmerized by your nails, and I know that’s always a side conversation on your videos (because you have such lovely nails!). But aren’t you tempted at least once to come on with jagged, garden dirty nails to April Fools us? 😱🤣
Hi, might I be able to follow pattern directions for Dk yarn on worsted yarn, knitting one long tube of both feet, putting in afterthought heels and afterthought cuffs? Might you write it for GSR's?🌻
You can find that box here: www.nancysknitknacks.com/notion-case.html And other tools I commonly use on my FAQ page: verypink.com/frequently-asked-questions/
I am going through sock videos. Learning how to knit socks. However I saw your pink case that held all accessories. Where can I buy one of those? Thanks
+Darcilla Olshavsky - you'll always find info and links to everything you see in my videos in the video description field, just below the video. The pink notions box I use to hold my stitch markers can be found here: www.nancysknitknacks.com/notion-case.html
Maybe the mattress stitch would be better for the bulky yarn? Not saying anyone would use bulky yarn but wouldn't they make nice slippers? As always, love your videos! ❤️
+Mega MindyLou - yes, the bulky yarn needed mattress stitch to close up the gaps, but I wanted to demonstrate the way it looks best in the lighter weight yarns. I'm glad I had the finished examples to show!
I actually really like the look of the socks in the bulky yarn... Can you make a pattern or share the total # of stitches on the needle for making the socks in bulky weight yarn?
+fierceblossoming - here is my Bulky Sleep Socks tutorial, which uses the same yarn I used for demo in the video: verypink.com/2014/10/29/bulky-sleep-socks-tutorial/
This pattern is only sized for women, but I have other patterns sized for men, including these two: verypink.com/2018/02/14/loaded-german-short-row-socks/ verypink.com/2017/07/12/sling-heel-socks/
Hi Stacie, I’m about to finish my first sock (ever!) using this pattern. So enjoyable! Can I use my circulars for stretchy bind off. You use dpns on the video. I think I can but thought I’d check.
+Esther Ward - just one (besides regular kitchener in stockinette), here is my video on grafting rib stitches: ruclips.net/video/wb5nfkgZ-Kc/видео.html
Grafting garter stitch is very easy. You do "knit, off, purl" on both the front needle and the back needle. Before you start, make sure that both tails are on the right-hand side. (Or check to see that purl bumps are facing you on both needles.)
I was unable to find the kitchener stitch modification I the pattern for an uneven number of stitches on the top and bottom of the heel. should I just decrease the other heel stitches by one to make them even?
The pattern here where you are commenting is actually written for 9" circulars, more info on my website: verypink.com/2016/02/24/socks-on-9-circulars/ It's a pattern appropriate for at least an advanced beginner knitter.
Hi Staci, my question is not about sock knitting but I'm hoping you can help me. I'm knitting a sweater for a baby and the pattern for shaping the neckline instructs me to knit both sides at once, add another ball of yarn, cast off some stitches, and decrease 1 stitch every row. I can't seem to wrap my head around it and I would love for you to do a tutorial.
It means to work one row of the shoulder, drop the yarn, pick up the second ball and work one row of the other shoulder. Turn your work and work back with the same yarn. Drop the yarn. Pick up the first ball and work the wrong side row. Turn. Repeat. You will be decreasing 1 stitch every row, 1st on one side, then on the other. The idea of doing both sides at once is so that they will look exactly the same (actually, mirror images). Knitters often do that with sleeves, or socks.
You can use Ravelry's Purchase Finder feature: ravelry.com/purchasefinder If you aren't finding your patterns, think back to older email addresses you might not use anymore that still may be associated with your PayPal account. If you are still having issues, please email me directly at staci@verypink.com
+nancy marques - yes, I'm familiar with it, but I've stuck to other methods for toe-up socks, because the Turkish CO isn't the easiest way to keep good tension. I'll put some thought into it...maybe there is a way I can tweak it for better results. Thank you for the suggestion!
hello , have just purchased this pattern. Bit confused with kids - how do I know how many stitches to cast on ? I guess the GSR pattern is the same at the ends with just less stitches inbetween to make smaller sizes ??? I have kids with uk sizes 12 and adult uk 1 . Thanks !!!!
Helen - this pattern doesn't include instructions for kids' sizes. If you have a question on the pattern, feel free to contact me at staci@verypink.com.
+VeryPink Knits, splitting isn't the issue; it's the extra bulk and weight on the needles. It's just an issue with fingering weight. When I knit the pattern in DK weight, worsted waste yarn was fine.
Is Tippy banging around outside? There's a loud knocking sound as you're working the last bit of the toe onto the 9" circular. Sounds like a wonderful pattern! Can't wait to get started! Always overjoyed with your patterns!
+Kinna Walker - haha! Good guess, but no. There was construction outside. Even though the studio is soundproofed, the sound still came through. I hope it isn't too distracting!
I am a beginner and I would like a simple pattern for socks knit with circular needle - no magic loop - . Would you know where I could get one? Thank you. I wish I was as advanced as you are. Thank you.
This pattern, with the help of the video, is a pretty simple sock pattern that uses a short circular needle. Really, you can use short circulars on any sock pattern, it doesn't have to be written especially for those needles. Socks aren't normally a good project for beginners, but if you are a confident beginner, I'm sure you can knit this pattern.
Regarding picking up the stitches for the heel, since I’m left handed and find it much easier pick up from left to right, it looks like I’d go through the front of the stitch. Is that correct?
Just make sure the stitches are mounted with the right leg in front, to avoid twisted stitches. This video explains more about twisted stitches: ruclips.net/video/plieeghzbH4/видео.html
I just realized...is your camera (the one that records your stitches) in your glasses?!? Because it looks so perfectly like what you see when you're knitting, and you religiously put them on before knitting. If so, I find this really cool!
+Dawne Skye - it's very clever and observant of you to think that! But, no. :) The hand-cam is above my head and out of the frame of the camera on my face.
Hi Staci, thanks for this excellent tutorial! I'm a complete beginner to knitting socks (I'm well established knitting scarves, blankets and hats though!) and your tutorial covers a lot of my questions. However, when the video gets to the top of the cuff (where it's ribbed) you've switched to DPNs. My questions are: Why did you switch to DPNs for the end of the cuff? And is it necessary to do so? Sorry if this is a silly question - as I said, I'm a complete beginner and haven't even tried it yet!
I haven't used DPNs before, but I was wondering why the top part of the sock (cuff side) needs to be split on two DPNs while doing the afterthought heel if they're just holding the stitches while you work the heel on the bottom part (toe side)?
+Elizabeth Thurmond - you can slip those stitches on to a stitch holder instead, if you like. But you'll eventually need to get them on a needle so you can work the Kitchener stitch.
+VeryPink Knits Sorry, my description is confusing. I meant how you set up the DPNs like you would be working in the round, but the heel is worked flat and then joined to the top. Just seemed a bit strange to me, but I usually do magic loop for in the round projects, so I wasn't sure if there was a reason for it or not. Thanks for replying!
dear Stacy, I love your work and tonight I was wondering which sock pattern to buy to start putting the techniques you showed me into action. I really can't decide. I wanted to work with circular needles two at a time toe up socks l know that might be too much , but I am lost in the Web site . Thanks for your help.
Jasmine - I recommend this pattern first: verypink.com/2015/03/11/toe-up-socks-using-german-short-rows/ I recommend knitting one at-a-time at first if you are new to socks. There are additional instructions in the pattern for knitting magic loop and two at-a-time.
Dear Stacy, I couldn't get to finish the steps to purchase that pattern, it opened a ravelry list, do I need a special paying method or I can just pay thought my Egyptian credit card? Thanks again for your help.
Here is the link to purchase the pattern directly on Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/socks-on-9-circulars I use PayPal to accept payments. Sorry, I'm not sure which foreign credit cards PayPal accepts, you'll need to check their customer service.
when she switched to the double pointed needles my mind was blown..i came to this video and was like ._. this isnt what im looking for but i really want to see what those chains are for..🤤🤤
Did you follow my pattern? Some patterns have pointy toes & heels, mine patterns do not. Regardless, once you put the sock on a foot, that should straighten itself out.
The cuff on every sock that I knit stretches fine, but doesn't 'snap' back. What am I doing wrong? Basically all of my sock cuffs are stretched out. would it be that I use acrylic yarn mostly? help!
Hi Staci, I live in the UK. I am a fairly good knitter but I have never knit socks. I would love to have a go though. I don't usually knit on circular or dp needles , I usually just use the 2 needles. Are there any sock patterns I could do using just two needles that you know of? Thank you.
Are you asking about a pattern where the socks are knit flat (not in-the-round)? I don't have any patterns like that, but they are available, and you can find them in a Ravelry search.
I've been looking at other sock patterns as well and most say to subtract 10% length from foot - is this the number I use for your pattern too or do I subtract the amount in your pattern from the actual foot length? Thanks
Not sure what you're asking. I give exact instructions in the pattern for when to start the heel, if that's what you mean. If you have any questions on the written pattern, please feel free to email me at staci@verypink.com
I love your tutorials. They're my favorite. My question is (I've never used DPN's or circular) I'm not sure why you switch from the circular's after you've been knitting for a bit above that heel set point, back to DPN's? After you've put the sock down and come back to the video the ribbing is being done on the DPN's. At what point do you switch and why? Thanks! I've been studying your videos, different sock ones so I can make my first pair of socks.
It's all explained in the pattern - if I remember correctly, I demonstrate one technique used in the pattern on DPNs, only because it is easier to demonstrate on DPNs, but you can actually continue with the 9" circulars. I knit everything except the toes and heels on the little circs.
Thanks. right, I can see how it'd be easier with that bulky yarn to use the DPN's there :) Is it just at the bind off on the top of the cuff/ribbing that you're using the 3 DPNs then? At about 22:17 on the video? Sorry if I'm missing something.
Hi! I've been knitting away on these cool socks - my first ever! - but can't figure out how much to knit above the other yarn I cast on for the heel and how to do the ribbing itself. Is a 1 X 1 ribbing one knit and one purl? Is the 1.5 inches you mention in the pattern both the knitting above the waste yarn and the ribbing? Oy. Such a beginner! LOL. Thanks!
Good afternoon Staci. I am so thrilled that I won the Knitter's Pride sock needle set and want to get started on my first set of socks. Can this pattern be used for the dpns I just received?
This pattern uses both 9" circulars and DPNs. You can choose to use DPNs for the whole pattern (and no 9" circulars), you'll just have to keep it in mind that the pattern is written for 9" circulars.
VeryPink Knits That is what I meant yes. I want to knit the entire sock with DPNs. How would you recommend dividing the stitches onto the DPNs at the point where the pattern says to switch to the 9 inch needles?
I can go with that. Thanks. By the way I have loved making the thrummed mittens. I have 5 children and each one got a pair this cold season. And I made sets for each child in my extended family north of Tennessee. A total of 15 pair. Yeah I was busy!! You have been a wonderful teacher, thank you.
I don't think I did say a needle size - if you're knitting socks, you'll want to use the size suggested in the pattern for the correct gauge. Most sock patterns (using fingering weight yarn) use a needle size from US 0 to US 2.75.
Whoops, whoops, whoops - I was thinking this was my "Using 9" circulars" video, not a sock tutorial, sorry! Ignore my last answer. This pattern uses Size US 3 (3.25mm) for the DK weight socks, and Size US 1.5 (2.5mm) for the fingering weight socks.
I'm probably wrong but I've never knit a sock yet but those I've watched didn't leave a hole for the heel they simply did German short rows and kept knitting and there weren't any holes left to sew, since you do it this way you must like it better but does it really matter?
It's normal to see a gap any time you change direction in your knitting - like sock heels. This video may help: ruclips.net/video/uS8xRMvLzfg/видео.html
Staci, I am knitting these for a friend, and knit the foot too long. I had finished the sock when I realized the mistake. Is there a way to remove the toe and rip out the length needed then reattach the toe? If so, can you provide me a resource to get specific instructions? If not, do you have any advice?
Oh no! There may be a resource out there that explains how to do it, but I'm not aware of it. If I was in your same position, I would rip back and reknit - or finish these socks and find someone with bigger feet to give them to, and start over on a new pair for the friend.
Ok so I am knitting socks BUT they are on 5mm needles in a 100% cotton #4 yarn. Now here's my issue and I hope you can help me. I have sock yarn, a pattern I'd like to use the yarn for HOWEVER, I cannot "get used" (lack of better words")to the 2.25mm or 2.75mm needles. Any advice on how I can solve this and make socks in the proper yarn weight? Thank you in advance for your help.
Yes - knitting socks will be much more comfortable with wool or a wool blend. Cotton yarn has no "give" and it is tough on the hands. Beyond that, the more you use the smaller needles, the more familiar they will become.
Another quick question (I bounced over from your other video)- do you think I could put in a lifeline before I begin knitting w/ waste yarn for the heel? Thanks as always!
how come when you first mention how to do the knit GSR you don't mention putting the yarn forward you just went straight to slipstitching the stitch but in the next round you say, put the yarn forward between the two stitches then slip stitch. i'm very confused! but will keep at it, thank you for your videos.
The GSR stitches at the ends are different from the ones further inside...if you are working from the pattern (where all of the instructions are clear) and you have a question, please email me directly at staci@verypink.com for help.
@@verypinkknits ok, thanks so much I did purchase your pattern through ravelry and do have one question so will write you there-there meaning @verypink.com
Totally off topic, you have the most beautiful nails! The shape of them, they are just gorgeous!

Hi Staci, I'd like to know if I can knit socks with 9" circular needles using a pattern for DPNs, mainly for the leg part
Yes, you can use 9" circulars on patterns that call for DPNs.
I actually really like the look of the socks in the bulky yarn... Can you make a pattern or share the total # of stitches on the needle for making the socks in bulky weight yarn?

DPNs are a personal preference for me when I do the BO, you can use whichever needles you like.
Have you done a tutorial showing different types of kitchener stitch, that is, for garter stitch as well as stockinette?
+Esther Ward - just one (besides regular kitchener in stockinette), here is my video on grafting rib stitches:
ruclips.net/video/wb5nfkgZ-Kc/видео.html
+VeryPink Knits Thank you. I really value your tutorials. You really have taught me almost everything I know about knitting!
It's all in the pattern! If you have questions specific to the pattern, please email me at staci@verypink.com.
Which sock pattern on circular needle of yours would be easiest to start with? Thank you.
Hi Staci...I purchased your pattern last night and it is not in my library, can you please advise how I can find it in my library..thank you
You can use Ravelry's Purchase Finder feature: ravelry.com/purchasefinder If you aren't finding your patterns, think back to older email addresses you might not use anymore that still may be associated with your PayPal account. If you are still having issues, please email me directly at staci@verypink.com
Hey Staci, have you heard of the Turkish toe up sock method? Tutorial? ☺️
If I wanted to make a pair of socks using Worsted weight ...would I decrease the number of stitches in the pattern?
I have other patterns/tutorials that use worsted weight yarn - I don't recommend attempting to alter a sock pattern to use a different weight of yarn.
I don't recommend using worsted weight scrap yarn with fingering weight main yarn. Use DK or sport weight scrap yarn.
It may depend on the yarn - using a non-splitting worsted weight yarn is fine, it's what I always use.
+VeryPink Knits Can still hear you loud and clear. It was just different and I had headphones on, so that probably didn't help.
It's only a personal preference of mine - I prefer to work rib and the BO on DPNs. You don't have to, you can stick with the circulars!
Thanks for replying!
dear Stacy,
I love your work and tonight I was wondering which sock pattern to buy to start putting the techniques you showed me into action. I really can't decide. I wanted to work with circular needles two at a time toe up socks
l know that might be too much , but I am lost in the Web site .
Thanks for your help.
Jasmine - I recommend this pattern first:
verypink.com/2015/03/11/toe-up-socks-using-german-short-rows/
I recommend knitting one at-a-time at first if you are new to socks. There are additional instructions in the pattern for knitting magic loop and two at-a-time.
OK, thanks Stacy though I am worried about the second sock syndrome especially I'm feeling low lately.
Dear Stacy,
I couldn't get to finish the steps to purchase that pattern, it opened a ravelry list, do I need a special paying method or I can just pay thought my Egyptian credit card?
Thanks again for your help.
Here is the link to purchase the pattern directly on Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/socks-on-9-circulars
I use PayPal to accept payments. Sorry, I'm not sure which foreign credit cards PayPal accepts, you'll need to check their customer service.
VeryPink Knits thanks again, I 'll try now again and call them tomorrow morning if I had trouble getting through, unfortunately its 1:21am :-)
when she switched to the double pointed needles my mind was blown..i came to this video and was like ._. this isnt what im looking for but i really want to see what those chains are for..🤤🤤
Can you do a cuff-down sock with a free pattern? on 9''circulars though
Just finished my first sock! Only thing is both my toe and heel are kind of pointed, how can I avoid that?
Did you follow my pattern? Some patterns have pointy toes & heels, mine patterns do not. Regardless, once you put the sock on a foot, that should straighten itself out.
The cuff on every sock that I knit stretches fine, but doesn't 'snap' back. What am I doing wrong? Basically all of my sock cuffs are stretched out. would it be that I use acrylic yarn mostly? help!
+Melissa Hardesty - yes, my guess is that it's the yarn you're using. Wool has good "memory", synthetic fibers don't.
I've never seen anyone knit using your "cobra strike" method. Did you train yourself?
Hi Staci, I live in the UK. I am a fairly good knitter but I have never knit socks. I would love to have a go though. I don't usually knit on circular or dp needles , I usually just use the 2 needles. Are there any sock patterns I could do using just two needles that you know of? Thank you.
Are you asking about a pattern where the socks are knit flat (not in-the-round)? I don't have any patterns like that, but they are available, and you can find them in a Ravelry search.
Yes that's correct. Thank you I'll have a look.
Yes, that's right. I did hold a DPN in my right hand for the BO, because I found it easier to do the stretchy BO stitches that way.
I have "12" size 4 Addi. Hope it works for me
12 inch circulars are a good size for baby hats and sweater sleeves - really too long for socks. This pattern uses 9 inch circulars.
LOL. Thanks!
Robin - are you working from the written pattern? If you are working from the pattern and you have a question, please email me at staci@verypink.com.
Thank you!

How would you recommend dividing the stitches onto the DPNs at the
point where the pattern says to switch to the 9 inch needles?
Just separate the total stitches by 3. I can't help much with pattern mods, but it won't be difficult to think through the pattern on DPNs.
I can go with that. Thanks. By the way I have loved making the thrummed mittens. I have 5 children and each one got a pair this cold season. And I made sets for each child in my extended family north of Tennessee. A total of 15 pair. Yeah I was busy!! You have been a wonderful teacher, thank you.
what is the needle size? I know the cord/cable is 9", but I didn't catch the needle size you recommend.
VeryPink Knits
Thank you. I will keep that in mind if I find no other option. Thank you so much for your help.
Hi, which crochet hook did you use for the cast on please?
+Ravenous Addict - I used a Knitter's Pride Dreamz wood crochet hook.
@@verypinkknits If I use the 2.75mm needles or the one next size up with sock yarn would that totally mess up the gauge?
I can't answer that without knowing the pattern - you'll need to contact the pattern designer for help with that.
@@verypinkknits Thank You so Much! I appreciate the help
Another quick question (I bounced over from your other video)- do you think I could put in a lifeline before I begin knitting w/ waste yarn for the heel? Thanks as always!
Yes - I'd probably put it in two rounds below, so that it doesn't get confused with the waste yarn you knit in to place the heel.
Thank you!
how come when you first mention how to do the knit GSR you don't mention putting the yarn forward you just went straight to slipstitching the stitch but in the next round you say, put the yarn forward between the two stitches then slip stitch. i'm very confused! but will keep at it, thank you for your videos.
Can you make your sock patterns for men too
Many of my patterns are designed for both men and women: verypink.com/category/socks/
I would put a lifeline in so when you do this there is no panic
Can you please explain what DK weight it?
+Irene Foss - here is a yarn weight conversion chart, this should help:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yarn_weight
What a great giveaway
How much yarn should I set aside for the heel?
I believe that is in the pattern...the amount of contrasting yarn needed for the heel/toe.
