- This is an instructional video for placement of the Figure 8 Sternal Closure system. The Figure 8 system can be used, in conjunction with or, as a replacement for the steel wire currently used in over 400,000 sternotomies yearly n the US. Figure 8 is simple to use, stronger the wire closure, and has reduced cut-through.
We are trying to improve the outcome following open heart surgery and this is one way to prevent problems and pain. Thank you so much for the comment and for watching! Good luck in school.
Thank you for sharing this with us. As a person in school to receive my medical assistant degree these this are important to know of and the way you have taught it is amazing and very easy to remember. Thank you doc.
"Sooo...We've zip tied your ribs together..." 😆 How ridiculously brilliant and simple way of dealing with a problem! Fantastic!! 😄
+rayman1113 Essentially yes! But our device is significantly stronger. Thanks for watching and sharing!
***** Well, obviously! I'm just a huge fan of brilliant design! Well done! 🙋
What a convoluted reienvention of an otherwise perfectly good wheel.
Brilliant!
After seeing this why would any surgeon use those plain wires that cut through the tissue and leave twisted sharp ends? And I saw in the other video demo that shows how well these straps withstand the stretching force postoperatively.
I hope all Thoracic Surgeons see it; and start using it.

This may seem like a dumb comment but it seems like the video indicates that the straps are removed at a later date? If so, how does that work since the wound is healed?
The device(s) remain in situ after the sternum and skin have healed. However, if necessary, they are easily explanted if necessary (such as in the event of infection), during a minimally invasive surgical procedure involving incisions in the overlying tissue. I am not a thoracic surgeon and I do not play one on TV, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn express.
