I’ve been a teacher for over 2 decades & usually love my job. Just today I got an accusatory email from a parent saying that I was “not professional” to expect their 17 year old advocate for themselves. Toxic parenting is a major problem.
Plenty of professionals have to deal with worse challenges than that. But they are paid enough to justify it. Increase average teacher salaries by 50% and there will be no teacher shortages. Guaranteed.
Quite often parents expect things about their children which are wrong. Then there are those who don't know the laws pertaining to the relationship between them. Obviously that is different from one country to another but they can be dissociated from their country.
@@kyleolson9636 Hi, Teacher here. i agree more $$ would take some weight off of our shoulders . A salary which would provide us with enough income to rent in the communities we serve instead of commuting over an hour each way would take the edge off . BUT it's not just the parents. It's the lack of accountability for student behavior which has gotten much worse , even before the pandemic. The amount of time, energy and stress that goes into standardized testing most of us don't believe in and most importantly the lack of respect is demeaning ....
Teachers I've talked to said they need smaller classroom sizes. Over 30 students for each teacher is too many to give sufficient attention to each student. Along with better pay and support from administration and parents.
I have been in the education field for 30+ years in Texas. Our problems here (in my opinion)-1) The people who make decisions for us (our governor and legislators) have never taught. 2) Our administrators only look at test scores, forgetting each student is different with different learning modalities. 3) Overcrowded classrooms- when you get 30+ kiddoes in a classroom they are not learning 4) Not a lot of parental support- Parents do not want you calling them about their kiddoes behavior 5) When the kiddoes do not do their classwork and have alphabets behind them (LD, ADHD, ADD,etc) parents expect you to give their kids a "pass" unfortunately...usually. Or they say you are not following the IEP. 6) Teachers are overworked- usually given something to do that was due yesterday 7) Discipline is an issue- forget requiring students to behave. They don't. 8) Students DO NOT NEED A CELL PHONE AT SCHOOL- I am sorry, but they spend their time looking at Tik Toks, videos, games, etc and teachers are constantly saying "Put the phone away".. If the student does not, and the teacher asks for the phone the students tell them 'You are not taking my phone" and will fight about it. The parents will say, "You should not have taken their phone'. 9) Extra responsibilities- a teacher did not come in, so they move all that teachers students to your classroom for the day 10) Teaching is a "thankless job" and it can be a 'rewarding job". I have been in this field 30+ years as a bilingual-ESL Spanish teacher. I have been touched emotionally by my families and their children. I love working with immigrants as they understand the value of an education. I don't feel our American students understand the value of an education. Most American children I have worked with come in the classroom "gooing" off. My immigrant students never did that. Now, because I am strict and structured once I set the parameters down my American students get on my page. They still act "goofy" but in other classrooms, not in mine. Education has value. If all students can understand this concept our American system would be a whole lot better (in my opinion) 11) No respect for teachers and lastly 12) Low pay. This is why there is a teacher shortage in Texas, so I imagine it is the same in all parts of the USA. It takes a really special person to decide to teach- To be a bilingual-ESL teacher, to be a Special Education teacher, to be an Art teacher, to be a Music/Orchestra/Band teacher, to be a Math teacher (make sure your children know the multiplication table by rote memorization by 3rd grade) and to be an ordinary- everyday teacher. We are educators. Treat us as such. Get out and involve yourself in your childs life- volunteer at their school. See what is going on daily. Keep a relationship with your child's teachers. Then maybe, just maybe we will not have a shortage.
Trying to figure out how to copy and repost your comment to Facebook, I don't think I've ever heard anyone outline so explicitly and eloquently what exactly is breaking down our public education system here in the US. Privatization of education and public charter schools pulling funding from other public schools also isn't helping. Thank you so much for your comment and your thoughts and sharing your experiences. I'm a SpEd support teacher (RSP) in the LA area, CA. My heart goes out to you in TX. From what I know, you guys almost get paid half of what we're paid, and I don't know that the cost of living is half of what it is here any more. Cost of living in LA is not great either. Trying to convince my Wife for us to move outside of urban LA someday. Too many problems here overall. Wish it wasn't so.
You said literally EVERYTHING I wanted to but didn’t. I addressed student behavior in my comment but you are 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 correct in every point you made. Thank you!
I taught high school for 11 years. I have a masters degree. I left due to principals and counselors. I LOVED my kids, but I had enough with administration. I'm finishing up my 3rd year of substituting. 👨🏻🏫📚📝
Ask most people in my building, and they will tell you pay is NOT the number 1 problem. Sure, pay could be better, but that pales into comparison with the unchecked student behaviors, parents who do not care, and unreasonable classroom expectations. Is it really my fault Little Johnny cannot pass the state assessment when he roams the hallways or is absent 80% of the time? Admin is supposed to support teachers, but most of the time the relationship is adversarial. They give these kids no consequences, and then blame us for poor classroom management when they do a walkthrough and the kids are off the chain. Pay is not the biggest problem. It's the stress.
Exactly. And in northeastern states, I’ve seen teachers come to school in Teslas. To me, the pay is not the MAIN issue, at least not up here. The biggest issue for me is the administration. The kids have problems, yes, but that’s to be expected especially in urban education. I had kids that came from drug addicted parents, etc. They needed support. But the word you used “adversarial” to describe the administration is right on the money. They don’t support teachers.
If it is anything like the crisis in the UK, the main reasons tend to be workload, performance management pressures, work-life imbalance, low pay, extra responsibilities beyond simply educating (dealing with increasing levels of mental health and poverty and the impact these have on discipline and physical health), and not having sufficient resources to deal with the extra responsibilities placed upon teachers. This is not an exhaustive list, there are many other issues, but I find these are some of the main drivers of the teaching crisis in the UK. 'Teaching in England Post-1988 - Reflections and Career Histories' by Prof Joan Woodhouse is a must read- it provides insights into why some teachers have made a long term career of teaching whilst many of their colleagues have left the profession, hence the teacher retention crisis currently in the UK.
My husband came over from Spain to teach and in his second year of teaching, in just one weekend, two of his students were shot. My husband refused to continue teaching in the USA, so we moved back to his home country of Spain. Even though his salary was good in California, it was just too dangerous for him to teach there. My first comment was already taken down because I suggested teachers needed bullet proof vests. I was being serious, yet my comment was removed, but it's true.
To be fair, teachers in Spain have a good life. Sure salary is lower but compared to the cost of living is decent. They enjoy more vacation, a better work environment, sick leaves and all the standard benefits of a civilized society. If you can land a decent job Spain is one of the better countries to live in, if I had a secure position there I wouldn't trade it for any job in the US.
But how can you fix student behavior when the teachers are at risk of being sued every-time they try to impose discipline inside the classroom, not to mention they risk of getting fired just by failing to address their students in their preferred pronouns?
You are both correct. I was written up 3 times in a year and it was used against me in my performance appraisal. I stopped redirecting students. Students do drugs in front of me that’s a dare and I have to walk away to keep my job.
I cannot imagine what teachers have to go through. Can you imagine any other profession having to get buy off from every single patient & parent of a patient in order to do their job or they get in trouble? Can you imagine going into a doctor’s office as a parent that has no idea what they’re talking about and telling the doctor that they prescribe the wrong prescription and you know better? Of course not. The parents and students do this to teachers all the time. You could not pay me enough to be a teacher in the United States.
While I appreciate his efforts in wanting to recruit black male teachers (certainly no qualms there), I thought he was going to talk about the teacher shortage in general. As a veteran teacher (17 yrs in secondary) in one of the bottom 5 performing school districts in America, I can say that there’s more than just one or two reasons why there is a shortage. It’s a combination of reasons that no amount of money can fix. Don’t get me wrong, money can help in certain neighborhoods or districts, but always throwing more money or the latest gadget or the teaching method isn’t going to fix the problem of good qualified teachers leaving the profession. In my personal opinion, the biggest ways to turn this teaching shortage around is to boot out the idea that politicians or other higher ups with little to no experience in the classroom should be making decisions about teaching. Leave the (qualified) teachers alone and let them teach!!! We know a ****ton more about what our students actually need than some suit in an office. Also, let us discipline. I’m not lobbying to bring back the paddle… though I wouldn’t entirely oppose it either- anyway, my school district makes it so difficult to discipline a kid, giving them so many “chances”, that kids just don’t care anymore. They’ll do whatever they want because all they’ll get is a slap on the wrist; they take that experience into life and it just screws up the kid as well as society. Get rid of standardized testing. Seriously, outside of a one time test to see how schools are doing, any other testing has to go. It’s absolutely ridiculous and it wastes time that should go to connecting with students and helping them learn. You wanna know why teachers are leaving? Because it’s generally not a respected profession anymore. With students, parents, and the higher ups. Society has taken something I love to do and has 💩all over it.
When I taught in China, I taught a full curriculum (Math, ELA, Science . . . ) to the same group of kids for six years. I got them in 1st grade and followed them through their sixth grade (as did their Chinese teacher). In grade 1, the kids are fun and funny and soaked up knowledge like a sponge. There were still bad behaviors, but they are more easily addressed when younger (for the most part). By the time we hit 4th grade, the kids knew me well and I knew them well. I could adjust my teaching style to match each individual. I knew each student's individual strengths and weaknesses. When they got to the more troublesome 5th and 6th grade, they knew what kind of "mischief" was allowed and what was not. I had a couple of students who, for six years, would not do their assigned work and made low scores. I adjusted their workload and gave them more remedial sort of work. I worked with them individually and discussed issues with their parents, yet they wouldn't budge. Luckily, they weren't the sort of students who caused trouble and disrupted class and their classmates seemed to get along well with them. They just didn't care about school (they were the same in their Chinese classes, by the way). However, for the most part, the students thrived and learned English well and had awesome scores and growth throughout. Those were some of my best teaching years. Here in the USA? Not so much.
Yes, in China and most of Est Asia it is a merit based competition beyond around 6th grade to get into the middle, high school, and university of your ability level. Therefore the Gao Kao test weeds out those that do not behave or perform. We in America should learn from this. Taught Taiwan 1988-89, MA East Asian Studies Chinese, Fulbright Scholar Japan 2003, Fulbright Scholar China PRC 2005, just retired from 26 years in US public schools.
Hi, I agree 100% No one believes us and most people still think we get paid summers off ! NO !! We get a salary for 10 months and SOME of us can afford to stretch that over 12 months. Most of us work over the summer . From , a Teacher
@@MargueriteKz Hi dear Good morning. I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. I am a teacher in Switzerland and we have a teacher shortage too. The work load is overwhelming especially for young teachers. There is still the belief that "more is better". Capitalism applied on education is suffocating teachers as well as students. Take away the pressure, give more freedom!
I wish I had this when I was teaching in Phoenix. I just left my teaching position in American and found a job at an international school in South Korea. They gave me a rent free apartment near the school and this has made all the difference. I do not see myself ever teaching in America again unless things change where it is an economically viable job.
Low pay produces resentment, restlessness, and stress. I’ve been teaching 3 years and it’s a struggle and it doesn’t have to be. 55K is 22.50 an hour. Not sustainable.
I was a teacher for 5 years. Loved the work. I could not afford to stay in the field. Making less than $30,000/yr (before tax) just wasn't tenable. Granted that was a private school. At the time, teachers in the public districts had a median salary around the 45k-range, now it's about 53k. With all of the inflation that has taken hold since then, the pay jump over time really only tracks the inflation, doesn't exceed it. Ultimately, I switched careers. I'm still in education, but I already exceed the median salary of the public school positions I mentioned previously. It's a shame, because I had a great rapport with my kids, but I just couldn't swing it as a recent college grad trying to start a life. Many people will need to do what I did. If you get offered a job with better compensation, superior benefits, better work-life-balance, and a pathway to advancement while staying in education? It's hard to say "no" to that.
Teachers should feel they have a standard, of an expectation in conduct of students and if there is not, parents can find an alternative way to teach their verbally abusive child. We need to stop expecting teachers to withstand abuse from students and have some expectations of basic respect.
LOL! Yes, yes yes You can't believe how exhausting and exasperating it is to deal with students who don't listen, don't pay attention , are disrespectful just to start . One of our Teachers won " Teacher of the Year" and then quit mid year the next year due to no accountability for extreme student behavior . No one believes us .... This is my last year after 5 years It's so sad .
Next year will be my last after 35 years in teaching public schools. I’ve taught in rural, suburban, and urban districts. The urban schools are the absolute worst! The students and most parents have absolutely no respect for their teachers. Even after 35 years of teaching, my pension is ridiculously low, so l will continue to work at my second job. The mental and physical stress of teaching has been immense.
The problem can be fixed without increased funding. Primarily we need a student-to-teacher pipeline. The best way to do this is to have the kid never leave the school. The kid takes classes during his/her junior senior year in the subject they want to teach (as college credits), then they do a two year student teaching (they would get paid), and then have a two year duo-teaching fellowhip until they get licensed. Important: they would never leave the school/district.
The teacher shortage is caused by the behavior we have allowed the students to impose on all of us. Money is NOT the problem. It isn't difficult or arduous. One teacher can teach 1000 students with the correct attitude. Hiring 99 unqualified and overpaid assistants wouldn't help. The GI bill is EARNED. Maybe that is the key.
Doesn't work in Switzerland where the compensation is adequate. Pay does not sufficiently compensate for the extra burden that is put on teachers outside their work hours by parents. There needs to be a different solution.
No. Teachers already make more than an average wage, especially when the limited number of days worked in a year and the generous pensions are factored in. Tax payers cannot afford to pay "triple" the wage. If you want more teachers, improve the quality of the job. There are a few things we can do: 1) We need kids who are better behaved and have more discipline. We need more parental involvement (and parents who back the teachers); 3) put most of the ever increasing administrative pool back into the classroom; 4) more prep time during the work day (to many teachers, especially new teachers, spend 5 hours a night preparing for the next days classes.
OK but what about those of us who already paid thousands for licensure and have been in the field 10+ years, miles behind our similarly educated peers financially?
I always hear about giving more to NEW teachers what about us veteran of 30 years teaching we have been in the front lines this whole time we deserve no we have earned bigger incentives as well! Don't take us for granted because I guarantee that if you only give those bonus to new teachers . The old guard will stop helping, guiding and carrying those new kids coming in.
I just got a new teacher job but decided to quit before ever starting because I realized I would be expected to create separate programs for students that don't show up to class and have serious issues like having just experienced homelessness without proper support staff. On top of that the principal came off as disrespectful to the teacher that I would be replacing and not mature enough for the kind of work he was doing.
The MAIN REASON FOR A SHORTAGE OF TEACHERS is because of lack of discipline among the students. The children are spoiled rotten at home and parents or guardians expect teachers to parent/raise these brats for them! No amount of money or other incentives is going to bring more teachers until parents instill basic manners into their children.
This is not the main reason- it’s not parents - I mean yea lots of contributing factors like he said 0:54 but I think the changes in children are due to social media. Kids can’t even go to school because all of the emotional distress they’re having. Those numbers are growing - there are so many outlying issues /salaries and appreciation being at the top. Parents go in and fight with these teachers instead of holding kids accountable - so yes it is the parents but please open your mind and see it’s more than that
Lol no. It's money. An advanced degree without the pay of one? I'll get paid the same as an entry teacher at McDonald's with minimum wage being $20 in Cali.
For real! Maybe schools should get a police officer stand in every class ready to "teach" disipline (maybe it would help if they just stand there) while teachers could actually teach. I'm not from US but this same thing is happening everywhere nowadays. And what I said was a joke. But then again I don't know anymore what other options are available anymore?
In the United States, public education is mostly funded by the faulty property tax system. in poor communities, with many vacancies and very little commercial development, there’s no funding for teachers or decent schools. And, the rich communities complain their taxes are too high and are not about to share any of their property tax distribution with schools from poorer communities that desperately need the funds. .
Yes exactly ! Here in California due to Prop !3 we went from having one of the best public school systems in the country .To having one of the worst spending per student . But as Trump said " I love the poorly educated " I bet he did . Without them he would NEVER have gotten elected
Singapore students and parents also put a higher priority on education and classroom discipline and expectations. It's not all about the money, it's about verbal and even physical abuse of teachers here in the US by students backed up by their parents and administration.
It’s funny they say there’s a shortage of teacher but in Vancouver and across the country, they just laid off a BUNCH on teachers and they have no job now. Wtf is our school system doing???
Good pay, strong unions, kick out kids who don't want to be there and are constant disruption and violent, admin part of the teacher union not school board and get rid of school boards. Pretty easy but instead it's easier to say just love students and get to know them and just make it work and we aren't going to pay you anything worth the stress.
The guy elaborated all primary issues, however, there are also other things that have to be taken into account and the finger of blame is pointed at the salary.
I respect teachers. I could never do this career because of all the issues with it. I do not believe there is a justified reason for all the problems in the education system. It's not an attractive field to me.
Retirement for the last generation was better than most. Today quality of doctrines are third world. Teachers actions followed. Bring back USA teaching!!!!!
Degrees vs Passion. Most people can be trained that are passionate about something. Degrees put people in debt and holds those passionate about educating back from successful careers while those who have degrees take their profession for granted.
Need seven years to be an effective teacher not 3 to 5 years. I worked as a teacher for 33 years. The classroom supplies need to meet the social economic of the area in which the school is located. In poor neighborhoods teachers need to be giving three to four times the amount of money for supplies. Teachers need to be paid the same as a computer programmers, system analysts, computer engineers, and engineers. Until we compensate teachers correctly and give them adequate supplies and materials, we are going to have a Teacher shortage problem.
There are plenty of certified teachers. They have left the profession to work somewhere else. Recruiting others to also leave the profession is not the solution. Fixing the working conditions is the solution.
because public education is a government monopoly, the system does not operate on basic economic signals. "investment" is a childish framing. it's time to flood the market with education options. this alone will enable teachers to enrich their career with advancement and compensation similar to most of us in the private sector.
Sir ,this video has not said the REAL reason you have a teacher shortage. THE CHILDREN ARE NASTY DISRESPECTFUL,AND MEAN! THEY DO NOT WANT TO BE TAUGHT, THERE ARE NO CONSEQUENCES for any of the behavior !!The job is dangerous ,On top of that the job requires ALL of your time. The people in charge want you to do the impossible!!!!! Parents train their kids to disrespect authority,Tell you what You teach and do everything we do for 1 month , I guarantee you will never make the same video you are making today.!!
Many of the assertions here are questionable. Parents are the first line. Teachers need to teach. And people’s values drive them toward certain careers. Men are underrepresented in education as a whole. The justification for making this racial was unconvincing. All teachers need help, but we have to shift cultural values and make parents teach their rotten crotch droppings to value an education and to show some respect. Let’s avoid balkanizing our nation any further and help all Americans.
The problem with kids failing starts with the parents and the home life. A lot of these parents dumped his kids off on the school and expect the school to raise their kid for them and teach them structure when the truth is the structure starts at home so the teachers don’t want the grief and all the extra work for being a mommy or a daddy on top of being a teacher it’s just too much work it’s not worth the money you might even get shot.
Regusrding student behavior, my pastor just spoke on this on Mothers day the Bible says spare the rod& spoil the child. Besides child birth classes parents to be take, their should be classes in how to discipline . Since there are many different styles and each parent myst find what works for them and their family.
Yes send more funding for schools that are already highest cost per student. Definitely don't punish bad kids and remove them from school or listen to teachers tell you why they are leaving.
I taught for 10 years, was a school administrator for 35 years....retired now.....as I see current education there are solvable problems.....no classroom larger than 20, double session helps solve the facility problem....school time should be required classes only ....no electives....electives are a family/community responsibility....band, sports, choir, etc.....operated through community efforts.....community bands....Pop Warner type sports....Little League, etc.....teachers need to meet the need of the next 75 years....not HUMANS.....only AI in robotic bodies.....AI knows everything....no need to TRAIN for 5 years or more.....AI has NO race or color issues....AI robot is physically stronger than any kid in the classroom....school room violence is gone.....kids have 4 hours of school.....8, 1/2 hour classes.....8-12 or 1-5.....learning is project based.....how to solve this or that problem....AI can create that curriculum without any PERSONAL interjections in the 1/2 hour session.....kids are REWARDED for progress.....since TEACHER/ADMINISTRATOR/SUPPORT STAFF's salaries are not encumbered, the cost of constructing AI's can be given to someone like Elon Musk..kids can actually be PAID for learning, just as we are PAID for our work on the job......learning, manners, life management, and needed skills will be the curriculum.....diplomas will be awarded upon project completion....no grades....no credits....group work and some individual guided project work will be the core of the program.....after 12 years of this standardized education regime, the young population can choose CAREERS.....medical, law, plumbing, electronic, and all the future careers that will develop in the next 75 years.....colleges will become centers of those careers, since AI's will have given the students the information and the ability to FIND the information needed......flaws.....some will see some.....others will embrace such a revamping of our broken system.....but the bottom line is something provocative and innovative must be done...a generation or two of this learning process will eliminate many ills of our society....and our world will be a better place.....
There is implicit bias in AI because those that are training AI models are biased. AI should not be meant to replace humans but rather support tasks that humans aren't as good at but AI is. We are a long ways away from AI being sufficient to tech a classroom of children given issues like privacy and empathy. Not saying it's impossible but other professions are likely going to be impacted first because of the implications it would bring to the field. More likely administrative work in a school would be replaced before teachers by AI.
Wow, what a rambling, incoherent wall of text. Everyone here is dumber for having read that. At least you have provided us with ample evidence that the education system is failing us
@@megancunningham4521 So every encyclopedia, printed historical journal and scientific paper is IMPLICIT BIAS????......what a frightful liberal shell you live in.....AI is bound to replace humanity....privacy and empathy are PARENTAL responsibilities not public facilities....you do know that without administrators in today's system, you wouldn't be anywhere.....try home teaching for a while....
It does not help that in the United States, nobody wants to pay teachers, the Republican party is actively trying to shift public education funding for private schools and religious institutions, half the schools aren’t even safe enough, and classrooms are crowded and teachers are expected to be babysitters.
This will not fix the teacher shortage. It might attract teachers, but we need accountability in schools for students, with support from administration, to keep teachers.
Too much school of education classes at universities, too many hair brain ideas to switch teaching methods that require "continuing education" for teachers. The schools of education and the mega corporates book publishing companies are the problem. Really bad books that poorly teach anything.
My father a teacher of 20 years quit because of the bs they put teachers through. 11 english teachers quit at the school with a graduating class of like 350 within less than 2 years.... Like bro wtf the US is BONED.
Mayne make it less expensive and less difficult to become one! Ypu have to do 4 to 6 years of college then go to student teaching which is 4months to a year (full time so u won't have time to work) u also have to have enough money saved to afford bills while you are doing it and have coursework as well. I will he on ny 4th time in 13 years. I haven't made it theu due to personal ans health issues and choosing a very discriminatory and raciat private lds university called byu. They ruined 10 yrs of my career
I'm starting my 4th year this fall. I live in the South. I cannot see myself staying for much longer if things don't change. I do hope there is a change; however, I hope it is at the Federal level. There are good people/teachers in red/purple states who deserve better treatment than red governors give them.
Sir... Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I heard you say one word about the out of control OCCUPATIONAL LICENSING for k-12 teachers. There is no teacher shortage anywhere if you get rid of some of the red tape and the need for this credential and THAT credential. And $1000 for this mandatory classroom management seminar and $100 for this criminal background check. Sir have you ever been a teacher yourself and tried to get a job in an urban district? The HR people in those school districts are not the nicest people. And if you're the teacher of the year in Arizona you still cannot teach California without a bunch of red tape. So if you're going to be teacher in a rich or poor district make darn sure you'll be in that state for the rest of your teaching career otherwise God help you. Sir you didn't seem to talk about ANY this.
Why is race playing a role in this teacher talk. We need to stop emphasizing race and focus on the issue at hand. You know what would be a good start? Educating the parents on what parenting methods result to good outcomes.
Canada is having teacher shortage. Ontario's Conservative government @fordnation & @slecce are following the U.S. model - surprise our children are getting short changed.
Yet I teach in Ontario and NONE of my friends can get a job, including me. Where is this teacher shortage because I don't see it. I'm about to throw in the towel if I can't find a stable job soon.
Leave race and gender out of it. They have nothing to do with it. This needs to be open to everyone. This pays for it but does not get the actual cost down.
Will people who get, aid, or abet an abortion have to disclose that on teaching applications? We already know minorities and disabled people are subjected to unfair profiling and discrimination at the hands of law enforcement and as a result may be unable to access teaching jobs they'd be great at... because of currently required application questions.
Schools need to look into allowing people without credentials to teach math and science. Otherwise kids in low income areas might go years without having a math or science teacher. Many people want to teach but don’t want to go into debt to do it
I thought this was going to be pragmatic but nope, just more ideological dogma. I agree with diversity but that is one of countless problems in our education system. This is at best virtue signaling and at worst divisive.
If you pay people a decent wage for doing the job instead of a substandard wage and stop broadening the job responsibilities maybe you can keep people. Right now you have a revolving door of greenies. Tell me you don’t understand solutions by not telling me you don’t understand solutions.
I've used my 32 years of suffering in the united states of america and have been shamed by my country, it's the country of institutions and all I wish and have been striving for my entire life since 1992 is to be a world leader seated at the united nations to help and educate all tounges all tribes all nations. Please investigate and help me and our future generations within my 5 children succeed in the endeavor. We remembered our paleo roots and have seen the archeology of native Egypt, I am a Hopi free citizen and I'm being hunted by nez perce and Blackfoot , separation of the wheat and the chaff. Thou shall not murder thou shall not fornication the body which is the temple of the living God 10 fingers out and 10 toes down I stand individually with my 5 kids, children may the odds be ever in our favor.
Im sorry to say but teachers will be replaced with AI in the sense, that an actual body won’t be present in the classroom teaching our children, one clever person sooner than later will create and immersive wall to wall white board that will project learning in a interactive way with children. This AI powered machines will be able to download on the walls with lighting speed videos, images, calculations, transport our children to countries all round the world via imaging and imerse them on how some of the video head sets are doing now. Yes we can talk about the shortage of teachers now and we can all agree we appreciate all the work they do but, we all know they will be a thing of the past as machine intelligence keeps innovating.
I'm deeply disappointed. Everything he said is important. But not one word was brought up to address the NCLB Act and how it forced our education system into a homogenized product of capitalism, worsening outcomes and putting a financial strain on the entire system. Without addressing that, everything he said in the video will do nothing but bring in more teachers who either leave too soon or stay and be miserable. We can do better at talking about this issue than this video.

Sounds like a pretty similar experience to the US, then.
On top of that, teachers are people and some of them feel easier talking and teaching disinterested pupils.
BooTube's deletions are out of control.
Wow that's a scary story
It's sad that you're right. Can't help but feel like we need to prevent teachers from needing bullet proof vests in the first place
To get paid what less than 100k to teach and the thought of being shot everyday at work?? Yeah no thanks.
There are plenty of teachers. What needs fixing is student behaviour.
But how can you fix student behavior when the teachers are at risk of being sued every-time they try to impose discipline inside the classroom, not to mention they risk of getting fired just by failing to address their students in their preferred pronouns?
What needs fixing is this farce of a democracy.
You are both correct. I was written up 3 times in a year and it was used against me in my performance appraisal. I stopped redirecting students. Students do drugs in front of me that’s a dare and I have to walk away to keep my job.
@@commenterfromanotherplanet055 Oj jeez, student doing drugs in the classroom? What school level do you teach in?
EXACTLY!!!! Now, I’m going to comment…. Let’s see if it gets removed!

But that costs money, just tell them to get to know students and yeah.
How much money is worth being abused both mentally and physically on a daily basis by all parties involved? *That's* the teacher experience.

I am a teacher in Switzerland and we have a teacher shortage too. The work load is overwhelming especially for young teachers. There is still the belief that "more is better". Capitalism applied on education is suffocating teachers as well as students. Take away the pressure, give more freedom!
One of the key concerns missing from this TED talk was his view on student discipline! It’s hard to teach through undisciplined student disruptions!
An aspect of deflection that many don’t want to admit to.

I went to urban schools and you aren't lying. You couldn't pay me to go back to those days, especially high school.
I love this Ted talk! I am currently working on getting my teaching degree as we speak and this talk speaks volumes to the field
I have found the one simple truck people with lots of money hate: we pay teachers
Triple teacher salaries and there will no longer be a shortage. Job's done.
Interesting Ted talk!
It does take a village to raise a child.
You know they won't even try that unless we have a government by the people and for the people.
Doesn't work in Switzerland where the compensation is adequate. Pay does not sufficiently compensate for the extra burden that is put on teachers outside their work hours by parents. There needs to be a different solution.
@@XdASeviX If it does not compensate for the time and energy involved, it is not adequate compensation.
Bravo!! Of course we need this for all teachers, but it makes sense to begin with the most vulnerable group. Education is everyone's responsibility.
You were smart. I got hired at a middle school like two weeks after school actually started. I lasted three days and quit
there is no shortage of qualified teachers. There is a shortage of fairly paid teachers.
There's a shortage of decent children and parents too.
No one will be where they are now without a teacher. Teachers makeup the bed rock of society.
RUclips is 10 times more educational than a high school
Parents go in and fight with these teachers instead of holding kids accountable - so yes it is the parents but please open your mind and see it’s more than that
No it's money
Lol no. It's money. An advanced degree without the pay of one? I'll get paid the same as an entry teacher at McDonald's with minimum wage being $20 in Cali.
@@shan80luvs of course it's more than that silly - i said MAIN not ONLY
What’s the problem? Why should wealthy communities share their resources with poor communities? I don’t get it.
@sarahtiferet598 Trump uses sarcasm a lot. Wake up!
How can we learn from Singapore? Singapore has monetary rewards for teachers that are paid in stages through their career
Singapore students and parents also put a higher priority on education and classroom discipline and expectations. It's not all about the money, it's about verbal and even physical abuse of teachers here in the US by students backed up by their parents and administration.
To fix the teacher shortage, we first need to fix the societal woes of our time.
It’s funny they say there’s a shortage of teacher but in Vancouver and across the country, they just laid off a BUNCH on teachers and they have no job now. Wtf is our school system doing???
Double the pay..agree
Good pay, strong unions, kick out kids who don't want to be there and are constant disruption and violent, admin part of the teacher union not school board and get rid of school boards.
Pretty easy but instead it's easier to say just love students and get to know them and just make it work and we aren't going to pay you anything worth the stress.
Idk pay them more?
The guy elaborated all primary issues, however, there are also other things that have to be taken into account and the finger of blame is pointed at the salary.
I respect teachers. I could never do this career because of all the issues with it. I do not believe there is a justified reason for all the problems in the education system. It's not an attractive field to me.
Retirement for the last generation was better than most. Today quality of doctrines are third world. Teachers actions followed. Bring back USA teaching!!!!!
Most of the best students come from the third world - look at the best universities in the USA 🇺🇸 😂😂😂
Degrees vs Passion.
Most people can be trained that are passionate about something. Degrees put people in debt and holds those passionate about educating back from successful careers while those who have degrees take their profession for granted.
Raise the salary. Done.
One year they put me in a dirty old video store, to teach! You can’t make this ish up! It was demoralizing and dehumanizing. 😢
because public education is a government monopoly, the system does not operate on basic economic signals. "investment" is a childish framing.
it's time to flood the market with education options. this alone will enable teachers to enrich their career with advancement and compensation similar to most of us in the private sector.

Great talk. Good job!
This is going on everywhere, from developed to underdeveloped countries.
absolutely LOVE this!
This author of this video should be a teacher for the next 30 years, he might be really good at it
The problem with kids failing starts with the parents and the home life.
Home schooling.

It does not help that in the United States, nobody wants to pay teachers, the Republican party is actively trying to shift public education funding for private schools and religious institutions, half the schools aren’t even safe enough, and classrooms are crowded and teachers are expected to be babysitters.
Let's wait to see if it all works out in San Francisco before we implement this nationwide.
This will not fix the teacher shortage. It might attract teachers, but we need accountability in schools for students, with support from administration, to keep teachers.
I imagine that singling out one group for extra benefits that veteran teachers will not receive would recreate some resentment.
Too much school of education classes at universities, too many hair brain ideas to switch teaching methods that require "continuing education" for teachers.
The schools of education and the mega corporates book publishing companies are the problem. Really bad books that poorly teach anything.

If you want more teachers just due two things: 1. Pay teachers more. 2. Reform crap school system
Why is race playing a role in this teacher talk. We need to stop emphasizing race and focus on the issue at hand. You know what would be a good start? Educating the parents on what parenting methods result to good outcomes.
Every time I look for a video on male teachers, or an article, it always goes to “black male teachers.” Clearly they are not looking to recruit me.
Fine fine teacher
A solution to teachers shorted nobody talked about.
Parents are the first line of defense.
Will people who get, aid, or abet an abortion have to disclose that on teaching applications? We already know minorities and disabled people are subjected to unfair profiling and discrimination at the hands of law enforcement and as a result may be unable to access teaching jobs they'd be great at... because of currently required application questions.
It may not matter... Bt m not convinced by the agenda
All true, doing some research for a non-fiction book, DM me if you'd like to be interviewed
Many African-Americans attorney soldiers were denied those benefits.
Schools need to look into allowing people without credentials to teach math and science. Otherwise kids in low income areas might go years without having a math or science teacher. Many people want to teach but don’t want to go into debt to do it
This dude looks like he wants to sell me a vacuum cleaner
No shame, just funny
Funny.
3 more years to retirement. Can’t wait.
Enough with restorative justice and Marxism in school.
This is racism
Yes, it is
Simple: Double the pay.
It would take OVER $100,000 AFTER TAXES to get me to ever come back.
I thought this was going to be pragmatic but nope, just more ideological dogma.
I agree with diversity but that is one of countless problems in our education system. This is at best virtue signaling and at worst divisive.
Because that's what I'm going to do. :)
Americans are rich in any resource theyap can not run short of teachers.
Tomorrow is my exam plz gaich pray for me ❤️
If you pay people a decent wage for doing the job instead of a substandard wage and stop broadening the job responsibilities maybe you can keep people.
I think you need more professional help than a teacher can provide.
well, the US had a teacher purge.
gee, I wonder where that came from.
thankfully, only the best stayed... rightthink be praised!
sooo... have fun?
🫵🏻 You're a teacher. It should be "No TEACHER Left Behind."
You want to talk about a strain on the system but you don't mention millions of anchor babies and illegals being put in school? Imagine that.
Can't cry about capitalism for an industry that is government funded
Why Not All People And Just Blacks Only Including Only Male? Not Worthy, If This Is One Sided
