Used to be an apprentice for a custom residential sheetrocker. We installed and finished the sheetrock multimillion dollar homes. On the side, we would also do remodels and repairs. Mesh tape always comes back after a few years. It does not bind to the drywall. I have only known one lady who used it, but she applied several extra strange steps to make it bond. I recall it also involved 5-10 minute mud. If you are doing an at-home repair and need something easy but not forever pretty, sure. Go with the fiber mesh. If you are a professional wanting to provide the best quality repairs for your customer, and patches that won't come back... I highly recommend fibafuse. It was originally designed to tape paperless drywall, however they found it works extremely well on regular sheetrock also. It's not sticky, but with the mud it permanently bonds to the sheetrock. I know a lot of finishers who swear by it even on those monster 4,000-8,000 square foot houses.
Yeah I use the mesh all the time, starting to switch over to the fiber tape because it's thinner, I haven't had any problems with it. You just have to make sure you're pushing the mud into the tape, I'd also throw a bit of mud between the drywall sheets before the mesh to completely encapsulate the tape. Now I've have issues not sanding enough or too much and not seeing it until after paint, that was my fault. It's alot less common now for me now I'm getting used to it.
Mesh is crap. The strands are not bonded to each other and allow them to pull from the mud. Found this when I was removing a section with mesh tape. It just doesn't bond. Paper tape though.. is bonded if done correct. Fiba fuse is a way better choice.
Mesh tape is good for quick patch jobs but paper is the professionals choics for regular jobs. I am DIY'er and always used paper because I prefer the feel and how it blends i to the wall so well
Using the stick feature is what makes 90% of plastererers think mesh doesn't work. Use it like the paper one - first put on the plaster then put in the mesh tape. This is a little stronger and you don't have the problem of tape peeling of next day from airbubles
I have finished drywall for 20+ years. I always and only use mesh tape. I find it easier to use and have never had a failure. Works Great in corners too >>>
For diy patching a hole mesh is easiest but harder to get a perfect smooth finish. The guys who repaired my arch for an insurance job used mesh tape around the external and it looks terrible. I find it takes longer to top mesh in a way that doesn't leave the bumpy surface.
PRE FILL all joints. Then mesh on butts, paper on bevels and inside corners, metal bead for outside corners. That’s the method I’ve been taught. Not saying it’s right or wrong don’t care about other opinions. My question is, does anyone use metal bead on inside corners? If so, why? I always think about doing this when I have to tape a full room with closets and window returns and funky angels etc…
Mesh tape should only be used with hot mud and paper should only be used with regular mud. They both have their uses and work perfectly if you know when to apply them
Paper tape for the Inside corners. Mesh on the Flat and butt joint. When you use mesh, you have to use 20 minute and it 90 minute.Whichever it just has to be hot mud
Paper tape works for every application flats/butt/corners Mesh on the other hand does not work for corners since it doesn’t have the crease in the middle like paper/ mesh , is also great for patching drywall holes.
There’s a chemical process that causes the mesh to lift from the wall as the compound hardens. You have to use specific mud for mesh. Most all purpose mixes will only work on paper tape.
Well the glue is the reason so many people complain about mesh tape - it cracks if the tape is not submerged in mud on all sides. Which is why you should not use the glue feature of the mesh tape as well.
Mesh for flats, paper for corners. Use a hot mud for first coat over mesh. Happy taping 😊

The mesh tape doesn’t pop off like paper tape does. Or air bubbles. Paper doesn’t bind to the drywall either. The both “bind” to the mud.

@@hiimtheguy1606you might as well use paper at that point if you’re missing before and after the tape lol

You need to use the easy sand powder mix when you tape with the mesh or it will definitely crack
Nothing beats mesh🤘
Nice clear explanations
Mesh tape is good for quick patch jobs but paper is the professionals choics for regular jobs. I am DIY'er and always used paper because I prefer the feel and how it blends i to the wall so well
Use fibafuse with all porpuse with plaster for small repairs. And paper for estire wall or rooms
Overlaying mess in corners is perfect for preventing cracks due to movement.
I never (seen)had mesh tape pull away because not enough mud behind it, I have seen it with paper tape.
Yea but you will get cracks eventually unless you know how to use it
Mesh. The self stick and 1 less step is a game changer for me!!
Using the stick feature is what makes 90% of plastererers think mesh doesn't work.

I used paper tape and never had cracks, decided to try mesh for the first time and now there’s cracks everywhere. Never again.
@@Danz11115it’s because you used regular mud. Should definitely use a 5 minute or 45 minute mud to base coat and than you can finish it with regular
Never used it in corners lol that sounds weird but I always have used it for flats
@@Danz11115because you used bucket compound. Mesh tape has to be bedded in with quick set or it will crack

I watch a guy doing a commercial building and on the joints he stapled the mesh
tape to the the dry wall and then mudded over it.
Personally I have always used paper. I have considered using mesh tape but not sure if it's a good idea 🤔

Oooo I know, I know. Mesh should never be used on a ceiling. This is a well know bit of information. Though, your video does not state that.
Good to know 👍🏼
Paper tape is definitely stronger. Mesh tape should only be used on patch jobs.
Use mesh with fast setting mud only
Make aure to use a “hot mud” with the mesh tape
It’s better the tape ❤
Mesh tape all the way for flats, much faster and more efficient. Also less likely to bubble/blister
Mesh tape is only to be used with hot mud, otherwise certain failure will ensue.
Used both. Mesh doesn’t compare - it’s flimsy and can disintegrate when sanding too much.
Always use mesh with hot mud only
But when do you use each?
Paper tape for the Inside corners. Mesh on the Flat and butt joint. When you use mesh, you have to use 20 minute and it 90 minute.Whichever it just has to be hot mud

Why dont they make sticky paper tape?
Well the glue is the reason so many people complain about mesh tape - it cracks if the tape is not submerged in mud on all sides. Which is why you should not use the glue feature of the mesh tape as well.
Mesh tape is also garbage it cracks after a few years and it tends to lift if you try to use alot of mud
Same work 😊
Mud? Do I get that in screwfix? 🤦
I find it difficult using paper one. Then again im a beginner.
It for sure has more steps than the mesh tape.
Spray it with water first. Eliminates bubbles. Mostly.
Fiba fuse ppl 🤙🤙🤙
Mesh tape is only rated to be used with hotmud….
Mesh tape works fine in corners just saying
Not like paper tape. Won’t crease for a perfect 90’.
Good to know thanks!
Paper is the only way. Mesh has no structural integrity.
Never use mesh tape. It's junk.
Knauf fibreglass :-)
