In this harmonica lesson Liam Ward teaches you to play the introduction solo from The River by 'The Boss' aka Bruce Springsteen on a D diatonic harmonica. This is mostly suitable for beginners, but there are a couple of bends which will interest intermediate players. Good luck!

Does sound pretty nice on a C when just playing it like it was a D
Well done Liam, great lesson. Well presented and no showing off. Thanks a million.
You're welcome Ian, thanks for watching :)
Putting a name to a "bend" is pretty neat. Have been playing this song for years with a c
Bit of the Boss for you this week!
Do you have a tutorial for a song on a e key harmonica ? Couldn't find one on your channel
That's a good question - I don't think I do at the moment. It's a pretty rare key so I've tended to stick to C harmonicas and other common keys. Bear in mind that you can play any of these songs on an E, it's just that you'll be in a different key from me in the video. Cheers, Liam :)
Thanks for the response awesome tutorials mate !!
Hell, thanks a lot. Beginner idiot as I am, I thought about "song's in C / am key, so it must work with my C harmonica. Nope. Guess my neighbours and flatmate already asked for some well dressed Mafia guy to fix "the problem". Would never have thought to go for a D (as being usually on guitar and piano, so there's quite few common "key"-sense ;-) Great way how you're teaching, will follow you more, Thanks a lot!!!
You're very welcome Phil, glad it was useful!
Thanks I'm watching from Rome Italy
Hope you enjoyed it!
Were you at the Blues Kitchen, Camden tonight? (19/01 Thurs) I spent the entire night asking the rest of my harmonica class why I knew you. It just dropped. Wicked night!
I was indeedy. Great night. Sat interviewing Magic Dick at 2am, video to go up soon (though I have a backlog so not sure exactly when). Cheers, Liam :)
Hi Liam, thanks a ton for the lesson! I play this song a whole step down on my guitar (because of a lower vocal register). I'm trying to add the harmonica component now and I'm wondering if I should be getting a D or a C harmonica? Could I still use a D harmonica even if I'm singing a whole step below?
Yeah, if you're playing a tone down then you should use a C harmonica. I hope this helps! Cheers, Liam
@@Learntheharmonica Thanks Liam!
Great song Liam, can you please do the harp solo in 'fare the well miss carousel' by Townes Van Zandt?
Thanks Sven - I don't know this song but I'll check it out and see if it's suitable. Thanks for watching :)
Cheers,
Liam
please make vid for "bluebird" from ikimonogakari👍🙏
Is the original studio recording harmonica in the key of g
Hey I never played harmonica in my life and i’d like to be able to play this song. If I understood well, I should get a D harmonica?
Yes that's right, I'm using a D harmonica in this lesson. Cheers. Liam
Can you do the second part
Hi Sonya Colon, I'm hoping to do some more Springsteen songs soon so watch this space :) Cheers. Liam
@@Learntheharmonica great! And thats for responding
Hi Liam! Awesome lesson! Even I can bend this song and usually suck at bending! Have a nice day *
Thanks Riaan :)
Why won;t my D Diatonic Honer marine band harmonica play those notes?
Why a D harp and not a G harp?
Thanks for this!
You're welcome :)
Thunder Road, do you have it?
Great Liam!.....i play this on a G....starting on 6 6b etc!....more BOSS would be cool!
Cheers Ian :)
works great, thanks for that
Volevo sapere quale armonica usare in THE RIVER grazie
D diatonic harmonica.
Great work Liam.
Thanks 👍
Ah man, been trying to figure this song out for few weeks now, glad I found this. Have you done any other of Bruce's song? Trying to suss devils and dust.
Cheers Dave. I think this is the only one I've done so far. So many to choose from!
LearnTheHarmonica.com I for one would be most appreciative of a few more Bruce riffs, he's who I am focusing on when learning tunes at the mo as he does fantastic sounding harmonica solos, bloody hard to figure out from scratch though.
in which note I have to buy the harmonica to play that song, thanks
Hi Tomas, you need a diatonic harmonica in the key of D.
Hi Liam, I'm really having trouble finding the correct harmonica for this song. A while back I bought a HOHNER Big River Harp in D especially for it and I could hardly find any notes that correspond with any of the tutorials on youtube. Now I just bought a Fender Blues deluxe starter pack hoping to find one that would work and they all sound wayyyy too major. As I understand it they are diatonic harmonicas, which is what are needed for The River right? Or should i be trying with a chromatic one?
Like... not single note on either of my 'D' harmonicas corresponds with the harmonica in this video. It's driving me crazy! Do I need a minor scale harmonica or something?
Hi Daniel, that's a mystery to me. Hohner Big River in D (or any other diatonic harmonica) would be fine to follow this lesson. Perhaps it's just that you aren't able to get clean notes so you're not hearing the individual tones. Have you tried my video on playing single notes?: ruclips.net/video/YkEfzb-3pIM/видео.html
@@Learntheharmonica Hahah problem solved! Just checked out the single note video and that was the problem. Thanks for the reply and great tutorial mate :D
What harmonika have u got there? Brand?
Hi Max, it's a Hohner 'Rocket Amp' harmonica, like this one: theharmonicacompany.com/product/hohner-rocket-amp-harmonica/?attribute_pa_harmonica-key=key-c&gclid=CjwKCAiAob3vBRAUEiwAIbs5TkT66HQDosgYxiXKOS2U5s8isnutUhtPFwYreU1E7348mOmsGGF5uhoCt88QAvD_BwE. Cheers. Liam
Is HOHNER special 20 in D good enough for this?
Yep, I play Hohner Special 20s myself 🙂
Is it even possible to play this song with a c harmonica?
Yes you can use any key of harmonica - you only need a D if you want to play along with the original song in the same key.
@@Learntheharmonica thanks for the answer. I tried by myself and found a pretty good way, although I want to get a D harmonica now anyway, so I'm probably just going to playit like you showed in the video :D
try a morning of the slag ravine
Thanks for the request :)
Maybe I can play this while I get a DUI in my jeep
It's a G diatonic Harmonica, not a D one
In this performance he uses a G
ruclips.net/video/QHfdYaMksn0/видео.html
Original recording is a D
@@paulwelch6731 Thanks for that
Whats the harmonics u are playing?
Love that colour🤙🏼
It's a Hohner Rocket Amp :)
LearnTheHarmonica.com thx man!

can you make vid for "sakura" from ikimonogakari?😁
Thanks for the request, and thanks for watching :)
Learn “ if I was priest… please
can i play this song on a C harmonica?
my bad...didnìt pay attention to the video.
You found it in the end :)
*harmonica (the brand)
Is it just me or is a Lee Oscar easier to bend than a Maine Band?
You just need to play it in 3rd position and it’s easy … don’t even try in 1st or 2nd position …
damn, only have a C harmonica
You can still follow the tabs, you'll just be playing in a different key. You'll need the correct key of harmonica to play along to the original song though.
youre lips are almost dead XD
That guy can't hardly play and he wants to teach ?
:-(
