It's called a bomb cyclone because it comes from the term "bombogenesis" which is a storm that intensifies rapidly and can create large impacts such as heavy snow, rain, high winds and coastal flooding. For a storm to be considered a bomb cyclone, it has to undergo a rapid pressure drop of at least 24 millibars in just 24 hours.

It's origins are easily searched.
