  • Earlier this month, we headed down to Tennessee and North Carolina to drive some real winding roads in a 2013 Scion FR-S. All week we'll be uploading videos from our trip. We figured we'd start things off with an evening run through the Tail of the Dragon at Deal's gap! Also known as US Route 129, Deals Gap, or the Tail Of The Dragon, this twisting ribbon of tarmac spans 11 miles and includes 318 turns. Sounds perfect for a light, rear-drive car like our FR-S.
    Check out the POV Camera we use to film our test drive videos here: www.liquidimage...
    Support the channel by purchasing yours form our Winding Road Racing store here: store.windingro...
    For the best video experience, we recommend wearing a good set of headphones. The audio in this video was recorded with binaural microphones that, when played back through headphones, give the feel of 3D sound. Trick stuff.
    If you haven't already, subscribe to our channel! We post new videos like this every week.

    This is not my type of car, but I don't have anything against it or anything. Occasionally I hear people saying that they wished it had more power... With how little this car weighs and how good the extremely steep gearing is, 200 HP seems like a good amount of power considering it's price. Running in the high 14's through the 1/4 mile isn't bad at all. I bet it feels even faster being how small it is too. I bet it's a fun car to toss around.

    So beautifully balanced and good to drive, and the power matches the stock setup as it should (so no it's not underpowered) BUT the sound, omg, needs help. Sports cars need to be aurally thrilling as well!

    Yea dude, payed around $450 for mine new, but if you plan on speeding in the U.S. its a must have you can get away with 10 mph over in my area but past that you gotta be ready, buy a used one off ebay then send it in for a firmware upgrade if you want you won't regret it.

    Plus 1. I love my FR-S, and kinda get annoyed when people say it needs more power. It wouldn't be nearly as fun to drive if it had too much more power. Everything comes together so well. But, yeah……that exhaust note……lol.

    kudos for actually being a good driver, staying in your lane on blind corners and pulling over for bikes.... fuck i hate drivers in CO

  • @Master7086
    @Master7086 11 лет назад

    I have read some of the comments about this video and I would like to point out a few things. First: this a public road and you must stay in your lane, second: if you are driving 35mph+ on the main twisties and staying within your lane, then you are really driving your car hard. Videos do not do this road justice because you can not see the elevation/grade change of the road, nor can you fully see how banked the corners are... and no take backs if screw up, or tree of shame for you... lol

    Great video guys. How freely does it rev, and how are NVH levels at the top end? It sounds a little grainy above 5k rpm, though that could entirely be my ears. I live not far from where you were, so really enjoyed this.

  • @851995STARGATE
    @851995STARGATE 11 лет назад +1

    You don't know the rules of the road, let faster traffic go if your planning on staying in the lane he's a good driver, if you are driving 40mph+ on the main twisties and staying within your lane, then you are really driving your car hard. Also all the power on the FA20 boxer is made at or little above 7000 rpm.

    This might be a stupid question, but did you shift to 1st gear at 4:36? Judging by speed and RPM I'd say so, but that seems crazy to push it in the first (at least to me). Great video (both FRS POVs). I just drove a red 2013 FRS and I am in love with it. Will figure out a lease pretty soon. Great cars. Thanks

    windingroadmagazine Nice shifts and rev matches. I'm curious to know, do you prefer manual or auto trans (specifically w/paddles & tiptronic/slapstick)? Secondly, despite what you generally prefer (for example, let's say you prefer a manual) does your preference depend on the type of car - in other words, for example are you happy with an Italia or a GTR offering paddles rather than a slushbox seeing how it fits their speed and character, or do you wish to the Lawddd that you could get them in manual trims? (Personally, although I prefer manuals, some cars I prefer that they come only with auto paddles shifts).

      That's a really good question. In the case of the FR-S I'd have the manual transmission all day, because it's really enjoyable and rewarding to drive. Although the FR-S's automatic is pretty good, it does make the car feel sluggish off the line and under power. I've always preferred manual transmissions, if they're enjoyable to drive. Now recently I've driven some cars with manuals that in principle should be fantastic, but the reality was that they just didn't deliver a more engaging driving experience. This was either because the engine's power band felt better suited for 8-speed gearing, not 6-speed (think 2013 M5), or that there was just a general lack of feel and connection through the shifter. In other words, you were changing the gears, but it wasn't fun or special. Then you drive Porsche's new PDK and that completely changes your mind about everything. The 991 Carrera S with the PDK was a blast to drive, and one of the best, if not the best sports car I've ever driven. I don't think I'd have the manual. Then again, the new Boxster S has one of the best manual transmissions I've ever driven…so does the FR-S, so does the Fiesta ST…the MK6 GTI isn't bad either (I bought one over the DSG). But then you get into cars like the GTR, and the 458, and the 991 Carrera, where I feel like the double clutch transmissions and paddles add to the driving experience. So you're right, it depends! -CA

      Winding Road Magazine Also, 1990 MX-5 miata is one of the best feelings for a manual car. The best car I've ever driven and owned, while living in japan, was a 1998 Honda Integra Dc2. I don't think I've ever driven a better handling car in my life, and I owned around 15 different sports cars. I currently own a manual 2013 GTI. I've never really liked paddle shifters. I feel way more connected with the car when I have a shift knob in my hand.

      Ball Sack Funny enough, I also own a manual MK6 GTI (2010). I have driven both the DSG auto and manual, and both transmissions operate fantastically. In the end, I prefer stick shift and therefore went with the manual, yet funny enough over time I've found I'm really not all that crazy about its shift action in terms of it's direct feel, and 1st gear has a bit too much play in it than I'd like. Simply put, shift-action is a bit numb-feeling, compared to some other manuals I've driven, but its certainly not terrible either.
