My Top 10: -This Time Around/Owed to 'G' (Come Taste The Band) -The Spanish Archer (The House Of The Blue Light) -A Twist In The Tale (The Battle Rages On) -Before Time Began (Rapture Of The Deep) -Rosa's Cantina (Purpendicular) -A Simple Song(Now What?!) -Hell To Pay (Now What?!) -Bloodsucker (In Rock) -Love Conquers All (Master and Slaves) -Hungry Daze (Perfect Strangers)
Some Deep Deep Purple cuts I love: - A Gypsy's Kiss (the best organ/keyboard riff ever, and crazy good vocals from Gillan) - Jam Stew (why wasn't this on the regular In Rock?!) - Pictures of Home - Contact Lost (one of the most beautiful instrumentals ever) - Son of Alerik (I'm so grateful it was added to the CD reissue of Perfect Strangers) - All I Got Is You (the best track from InFinite, love it) - Wasted Sunsets - Fools - The Battle Rages On - Holy Man - Strange Kind of Woman (I know it's a hit but I consider it a bit of a deep cut since it's a non-album track)
My loved Deep Dive Purple songs - One Man's Meat - Never Before - Might Just Take Your Life - You Keep On Movin' - You Can't Do it Right (With the One You Love) - Emmaretta - Coronarias Redig
Hello Pete, my Wife and i have been Hard Rock and heavy Metal fans for 30 Years. We come from Hannover Germany (Schenker Town). We love your Show. You are doing a great Job. We would be very happy about a "Deep Cut Dive" Scorpions. Maybe that is possible. Warm Greetings from Germany . Keep rocking
So many great songs from the Purps many of which could be said to be deep cuts. My list 1 Living Wreck from In Rock 2 Demons Eye from Fireball 3 Never Before from Machine Head 4 Rat Back Blue from Who Do We Think We Are 5 Under The Gun from Perfect Strangers
Had to Do This By Era: Mark I: - Mandrake Root - Love Help Me - Listen, Learn, Read On - Anthem - April Mark II: Part I - Flight of the Rat - Hard Lovin' Man - Fools - Pictures of Home Mark III/IV: - Sail Away - Lay Down, Stay Down - The Gypsy - Love Child - You Keep On Moving Mark II: Reunion - A Gypsy's Kiss - Under The Gun - The Spanish Archer - Anya - Solitaire Mark V: - Fortuneteller - Wicked Ways - The Cut Runs Deep Mark VII: - Loosen My Strings - The Aviator - Rosa's Cantina - A Touch Away - Fingers to the Bone - '69 Mark VIII - Picture of Innocence - Doing It Tonight - Clearly Quite Absurd - Uncommon Man - The Surprising - Man Alive
So many colossal tracks! 70's Purple: •Living Wreck •Flight of the Rat •Fools •No One Came •Sail Away •Holy man •The Gypsy •Lady Luck •I Need Love •Love Child 80's/90's Purple •A Gypsy's Kiss •Mitzi Dupree •Hard Lovin' Woman •The Spanish Archer •Dead or Alive •The Cut Runs Deep •Fortuneteller •Loosen My Strings •Don't Make Me Happy •Fingers to the Bone
So glad you picked A Simple Song! Being in my 20s, Now What was the first album that was released after I discovered (and became obsessed with) the band, and I was super excited to get it on its release. Perfect song to start the album. Hits you like a train when it kicks in and Don Airey absolutely nails it. Great video!
Since MK1 is rarely discussed or given any props most of my picks are from that time: Why didn’t Rosemary The Painter The bird has flown April Hallelujah
This was the best deep dive show ever...I listen to most of them and enjoy but usually don’t find that many that competes with the high profile songs but with DP I loved every song you guys picked. ..Guess that says something about the band. Just swesome.
Just a few of the many. Chronological: "Flight Of The Rat" from In Rock "Holy Man" from Stormbringer "This Time Around / Owed To 'G'" from Come Taste The Band "Picture Of Innocence" from Bananas "Before Time Began" from Rapture Of The Deep Thanks, Pete & Jack!
My favorite deep cuts: Mach 1: The Painter - groovy guitar cranking hard heavy Hammond organ surging April - epic masterpiece by early purple starts off mellow with and orchestra and then explodes with a heavy conclusion sort of reminds me of Musical box by Genesis Mach 2: Not Responsible - up tempo bluesy rocker also has an F Bomb from Ian. Bloodsucker - Another classic showcasing the brilliance and the talents of each band member. Mach 3: Might Just Take Your Life - Bluesy awesome trade off with vocalists a little R&B sorta like a song by Sly and the Family Stone
Mine is Off the 1st album Shades of Deep Purple And the Address. 3 songs off the 3rd album Deep Purple Chasing Shadows, Fault Line and The Painter. 2 Songs off Who Do We Think We Are Mary Long and Place in Line. 2 songs off the Battle Rages On, Anya and Talk About Love. And Seventh Heaven off Abandon. 😎
Great show Pete, and your knowledgeable guest picked some great ones, you also fella. Hard Lovin Man is a belter but from Machine Head,i've always loved loved loved Never Before, that keyboard break is a chills down the spine moment and no matter how many times i've heard MH,i always look forward to Never Before. Saw them first at the Brunel University,West London in 1971 and many times since. You could definitely say i'm a PurpleHead.
Never heard A Simple Song before. I went to listened to it and loved it. Amazing song that has a cool slower start followed by heavy middle section. It rocked 🤘🎸
My favorite band could go on forever here are few. 1- Flight of the Rat - In Rock 2- Maybe I’m a Leo- Machine Head. 3- Rat Bat Blue- Who Do We think We Are. 4- Sail Away- Burn. 5- Holy Man- Stormbringer. 6 - Love Child - Come Taste The Band (My sentimental favorite Purple album). And the whole Morse era.
Some of my favorite deep cuts: Shield, Chasing Shadows, Bloodsucker, Demon’s Eye, Sail Away, You Can’t Do It Right, Dealer, This Time Around/Owed to G I’ve not heard much after they reunited in the 80s. Sure I’ve missed out some good stuff.
My favorite "deep" cuts: - When a blind man cries - Demon's eye - Pictures of home - Into the fire (Sure every true fan knows and loves these songs but these are for the ones who have only heard Smoke on the water, Highway star, Perfect strangers etc.) should listen
My deep cuts... "Wring That Kneck" from "The Book of Taliesyn" (1968) "Bloodsucker" from "In Rock" (1970) "When a Blind Man Cries" from "Never Before" single (1972) "Soldier of Fortune" from "Stormbringer" (1974) "Back to Back" from "Rapture of the Deep" (2005)
Yes the original mix/production of When a blind man cries just suits the mood of the lyrics so well. The band sound as if they are in your living room and it’s my favourite slow blues solo by Blackmore. You may be aware of the following. The other stellar version IMO is on Live at the Olympia (Paris). Cranked up, the middle to end section is breathtaking. On RUclips you can find Ian Gillan doing blind man with the blind blues guitarist Jeff Healy ... Great emotional playing.
Loosen my Strings Fortune teller Mad Dog A Gypsy's kiss Demon's Eye Loosen My Strings is criminally underrated. It is such a wonderful and heart moving song and easily top 10 in Deep Purples library.
No love for Slaves And Masters... again. "The Cut Runs Deep" and "Fire In The Basement" have been favorites of mine since it's release. Also, "Ted The Mechanic" from Vavoom (1997) is one we played on the air at the rock station I worked at then and I still think it's a killer cut.
King of Dreams & Fire in the Basement are very good songs. Also, caught their show on that tour at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. I was very stoked when they opened the show with "Burn". Only because Joe Lynn Turner was lead vocalist for that album and tour.
1. Flight Of The Rat- In Rock 2. Place In Line- Who Do We Think We Are ( Gillan uses his lower register ) 3. A Touch Away- A quiet song with great melody and lyrics from Purpendicular 4. House Of Pain- Bananas 5. Birds Of Prey- inFinite. Honorable mention goes to the LIVE Fools which popped up in 2000 or so. It gets jazzy in spots.
The House of Blue Light, The Battle Rages On and some of the late 60s albums are MASSIVELY underrated. Several deep cuts in all of them, translates into hours of great Deep Purple...
Some excellent Deep Tracks from DP: Slow Train (bonus song on Fireball) Smooth Dancer (Who Do We Think We Are) Too Much Is Not Enough (Slaves and Masters) Somebody Stole My Guitar (Purpendicular) Jack Ruby (Abandon)
very nice show. out of all your guests, jack is my favourite. i hope my deep cut suggestion fits the defenition, but at least it's not a very well known song. from their third album: april.
- Wring that neck (favorite pre In Rock deep cut) - Kentucky woman (love love LOVE the keyboards) - Pictures of home (favorite song off that album and favorite mark II part 1 song) - A Gypsy’s kiss (favorite mark II part 2 song) - Hallelujah (found this gem courtesy of Pete’s History of Deep Purple video!) - Anyone’s daughter (so unlike the rest of that album) - Sail away (sooooo bluesy and I LOVE it. Second favorite Coverdale song only behind Burn)
Many thanx Pete and Jack Painted Horse is actually developed out of Grabsplatter or Jam Stew two early instrumentals of MKII Listen to the version of Fools on Live at Ahoy with Orchestra it outstands the studio version. The in concert album contains the complete Machine Head live. They Played Rat Bat Blue in 96 in England a few times. But it does not work live.I think even the great late Jon Lord had Problems to play this very fast organ solo live.
"Bloodsucker" from In Rock really kicks it for me. Bitchin guitar and keyboard arrangement. "No One Came", "Smooth Dancer" and "Rat Bat Blue" are among the hottest rock songs in the world ......hands down. Check 'm out...
I think it’s only now looking back over 52 years that this band in all its forms can truly be appreciated for what they are ....The best rock band of the 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s 00’s 10’s 20’s. Okay that’s a bit over the top but that’s how I feel personally. What other band could put out Concerto for group and orchestra and In Rock within a few months of each other or with new guitarists, put out albums with the quality/diversity of Come taste the band and Purpindicular. As producer Martin Birch said “ Deep Purple were the best at what they did ... without a shadow of doubt“ 1- Why didn’t Rosemary (ever take the pill) 1969 album called Deep Purple. Great solos from Ritchie. 2- And the address. 1968 Shades of Deep Purple. Great expansive psychedelic instrumental. Soaring swooping solo from Ritchie which Hendrix liked apparently. 3- No No No . 1971 from Fireball. Great vocals and whole band performance 4- Twist in the tale 1992 ??. The battle rages on. 5- Son of Alrik. Great instrumental/jam/outtake by the band from a single b side in 1974. Longer version on, I think the remaster of Burn. Always felt they could have developed it into a long form prog masterpiece with lyrics. Perhaps more of a Rainbow song ( It was recorded a year or so before Rainbow formed) 6- Coronarias redig. B side instrumental from Burn era 1973/4. 7 - Silver tongue from Bananas. Just brilliant playing/arrangement/groove.
It's funny how those deep cuts don't necessary stand out when listening to a whole album, but when listening to them single-style they seem to be the greatest songs. Because they are.
1. And the Address - Where everything started and that riff is still one of the best ever. 2. Living Wreck 3. Smooth Dancer 4. Sail Away 5. High Ball Shooter 6. Love Child 7. Under the Gun 8. Hard Lovin' Woman 9. Mad Dog 10. A Twist in the Tale 11. Watching the Sky 12. Razzle Dazzle 13. Freedom 14. Cry Free 15. Coronarias Redig
1) Flight of the Rat 2) Rat Bat Blue (one riff of that song was stolen by David & Co. for "Still of the Night" (starting from: 0:34) lol 3) Fools 4) Solitaire 5) The Gypsy Cheers!
I was at that Deep Purple/ELP/Dream Theater show too in ‘98. Still have my ticket stub. Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming No One Came Rat Bat Blue Just Might Take Your Life Any Fule Kno That
1. Fools 2. Wasted Sunsets 3. Son Of Akerik 4. Pictures Of Home 5. Flight Of The Rat/Into The Fire 6. I Need Love 7. Our Lady 8. Holy Man 9. Smooth Dancer 10. Lovechild 11. Anthem 12. April 13. Hungry Daze 14. Spanish Archer 15. The Battle Rages On
Some of my favourite deep cuts: Wring that Neck April Bloodsucker Living Wreck Hard Lovin' Man No One Came Fools Maybe I'm a Leo Pictures of Home Smooth Dancer Rat Bat Blue Place in Line Sail Away You Fool No One Owed To G/This Time Around Under the Gun Gypsy's Kiss Son of Alerik The Battle Rages On
Just a fun side note... two, actually... 1. First thing I said to myself was that I love your _Burn_ shirt. Then Jack goes and says it, too. 2. Jack - I also have _When We Rock, We Rock and When We Roll, We Roll._ I thought I would never hear anyone ever mention that album out loud. That was a cool moment! Deep Purple 💜
@@allornadaaccordingtojack7601 Me too! And I really like that song. That's a pretty deep cut, too. My goodness, I'm tripping out! I seriously never thought I would be having a conversation about such a random album. LOL
Hard Lovin' Man (In Rock) One More Rainy Day (Shades of Deep Purple) Wring That Neck (The Book of Taliesyn) Listen, Learn, Read On (The Book of Taliesyn) Hopefully, those 4 qualify. Mark I gets very little love, so I focused more on that one. Jack nailed it: Hard Lovin' Man was always my favorite tune on In Rock, and they burn it up on that one!
Depends. You'd be surprised to know the amount of Deep Purple fans I know who've never even heard of In Rock, let alone anything from it (I'm serious.)
Thanks D T 195!! Hard Lovin Man is one of the BEST Deep Tracks I have ever heard, period. Plus, I find it very hard to believe that any DP has never heard In Rock. That album absolutely kills from top to bottom.
Great picks from the Amazon catalogue of Deep Purple. One other show I'd love to hear is a rant about why Deep Purple live, never play songs from Coverdale era. When I get to see a show with Purple, I would love to hear songs from the whole production. So why do they only play songs that Gillan sang in the past and present? I'd heard an interview with Ian Paice and he said that there are so many songs from periods where Gillan sang so it wouldn't be possible to fit in the other incarnations catalogue. In my opinion that is weird since Deep Purple is bigger than mark II and mark V. As a matter of fact they do play 1 song from mark I that wasn't in Gillan production so the logic in why they wouldn't play music from mark III and IV ain't coherent with the words from Paice. What's your take on this Pete?
Mk. 1 . Help .Shades of Deep Purple . Great slow tempo cover of The Beatles classic. Anthem .The Book of Taliesyn . Lovely string arrangement by Jon Lord . Great Ritchie guitar with the strings . Mk. 2 . Flight of The Rat . Deep Purple in Rock . Heavy song about a kid messed up on drugs The rat is his dealer. Fools . Fireball . Spacey , atmospheric , trippy kind of song . Jon plays a great organ intro . Ritchie's solo sounds like a cello . Mk. 3. Gypsy . Stormbringer . Heavy ballad of a troubled soul . David and Glenn do great harmony . Multi tracked guitar. Heavy keyboard rhythm.
There’s a ton of great songs I could’ve picked for this task, but here’s my top 5 (in chronological order): 1. Shield (The Book Of Taliesyn) 2. The Painter (Deep Purple) 3. Cry Free (In Rock bonus track) 4. No No No (Fireball) 5. What’s Goin’ On Here (Burn)
Unreal Group / unreal Catalog/ there is a reason they are still around 5️⃣2️⃣ years later. I’ll just throw one deep cut. HOLY MAN from the 9 th album STORMBRINGER 1974
So how about a W.A.S.P. show? Jajaja sorry Pete. Great show on Deep Purple!! I will go through their discography again, so much amazing music throughout their history... A Simple Song totally grabbed me as soon as I heard that album the first time, kinda gave me a feeling like Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming which is one of many favorite songs by DP. What would be interesting is a show on like the family tree of all the bands and/or solo careers that have derived from DP. Thanks for this series man, diving deeper into the bands we love is really great.
My selection of their songs I love: Coronarias Redig (Burn extra track), Love Child (Come Taste..), The Aviator (Purpendicular), Anya and Solitaire (both from The Battle Rages On).
For me-a five 1. Grabsplatter 2.Bird Has Flown, Gillan vocal 3. Rat Bat Blue--for the keys solo 4. Flight Of The Rat---one of my all time fav Lord solo's 5. Pictures Of Home-the stand out track that initially wasn't used live as a stand out track. Wild card---the full orchestra album, all three movements, for Gillan's best ever vocal on movement 2.
The two songs that come to mind: Walk On from Bananas & Dead Or Alive from The House Of Blue Light. And my personal favorite Deep Purple song - When A Blind Man Cries....not necessarily a deep track🔥🔥🔥.
1, April ,a twelve minuet epic - from deep purple 3rd album mark 1 2, Flight of the rat ,from In rock, 3,Painted horse , studio out take from Who do we think we are, 4, A 200 ,A instrumental from Burn, love it, 5 The surprising , from Infinite, brilliant song and great video
Gypsyb and lady double dealer, you keep on moving, nobody's home, wasted sunsets, not responsible, seventh heaven, 69, Emaretta, April. Whatsername has a Boston vibe in Steve's guitar I always loved that little lick near the end of the song.
Steve morse era . 1) out of hand ( now what) 2) loosen my strings ( purpendicular) 3)wrong man ( rapture of the deep) 4) Vincent price ( now what) 5) fingers to the bone ( abandon)
Lots of great stuff that doesn't get played much. My ten would be: Sail Away Listen Learn Read On Blind One More Rainy Day Hard Lovin' Man High Ball Shooter Smooth Dancer Fools I'm Alone Cry Free
5. Mean Streak 4. Bludsucker 3. Mitzi Dupree 2. Pictures of Home 1. Love Don't Mean a Thing ( prediction: Pete pics at least one song from each Coverdale release and Jack picks a single)
interesting choices. House of the Blue Light is quite enjoyable if you´re in the mood for some well-executed AOR, but i never understood why they had to do a rehash of Bloodsucker on the Abandon record
Wolfgang Kreis My Picks:1.Flight Of The Rat(In Rock,I wonder why nobody ever talks about that track... ),2.Pictures Of Home(Machine Head,My Favorite from that album),3.Gypsy(Stormbringer)4.Gypsy's Kiss(Perfect Strangers)5.Anya(Battle Rages On,Not sure if thats a deep track,but...)
My favourite band my top 5 is difficult because there are too many great Deep cut tracks. Mk 2 songs one song from each album. 1) hard lovin man ( in rock) 2) no no no ( fireball) 3) not responsible ( perfect strangers) 4 Spanish archer ( house of blue light) 5) pictures of home ( machine head)
1. Rat Bat Blue (Who Do We Think We Are) 2. Sail Away (Burn) 3. Lady Luck (Come Taste The Band) 4. A Gypsy's Kiss (Perfect Strangers) 5. The Spanish Archer (The House Of Blue Light)
It's so hard for me to name just 5 "hidden gems" by Deep Purple, so I'll just pick on not well known track from every album, though this is really hard too, because I just love 99% of what this band ever played. 1. Love Help Me, from their debut Shades of Deep Purple 2. Listen, Learn, Read On, from The Book Of Taliesyn. 3. The Painter, from their self-titled album. Although April is a masterpiece, but I think it's more known. 4. Living Wreck, from Deep Purple In Rock 5. I'm Alone, a B Side from Fireball 6. No No No, from Fireball, since I'll skip Machine Head, simply because it's all hits, so I'd drop one more song from Fireball. 7. Place In Line, from Who Do We Think We Are (I'm trying to avoid the songs mentioned in the video) 8. What's Goin' On Here, from Burn. People tend to skip this song, I don't know why, I find it groovy. 9. Love Don't Mean a Thing, from Stormbringer 10. Drifter, from Come Taste the Band 11. Mean Streak, from Perfect Sstrangers 12. Mitzi Dupree, from The House Of Blue Light 13. Fire in the Basement, from Slaves and Masters. It was played live on this album's tour. 14. Nasty Piece Of Work, from The Battle Rages On 15. Soon Forgotten, from Purpendicular 16. Jack Ruby, from ABandOn 17. Picture of Innocence, from Bananas 18. Don't Let Go, from Rapture Of the Deep 19. Out of Hand, from Now What?! 20. Get Me Outta Here, from Infinite
I can't rank 5 so here are my top 10 deep cuts (sorry): 1. Chasing Shadows (Deep Purple) 1969 2. Anyone's Daughter (Fireball) 1971 3. Rat Bat Blue (Who do We think We Are) 1973 4. Sail Away (Burn) 1974 5. Love don't mean a thing (Stormbringer) 1974 6. Cut Runs Deep (Slaves & masters) 1990 7. Somebody Stole My Guitar (Purpendicular) 1996 8. Don't Make Me Happy (Abandon) 1998 9. Sun Goes Down (Bananas) 2003 10. Out Of Hand (Now What!) 2013
This was an easy one for me. Not a huge fan of anything beyond the MK II & III albums. So.... 01) Bloodsucker 02) Demon's Eye 03) Never Before 04) Smooth Dancer 05) Stormbringer
My Top 5 Deep Cut Dive from Deep Purple: - One More Rainy Day Rod Evans and Jon Lord wrote a rather 60's poppy tune. Far from what Deep Purple is known for but I like it. One of my favorites of the first album. - April Early epic from the band. Not "Child in Time" but I have no clue why this song isn't more famous! - No One Came Not the bands most perfect song but that's why I like it. It always sound fresh to me. Would never been a big hit but just love it! Holy Man - Ritchie Blackmore didn't like Glenn Hughes direction on Stormbringer. I'm guessing this is a track he really didn't like but I do. Think Glenn Hughes sound great on this one! Picture of Innocence - "Bananas" might be the most obscure album from the band but it has some pretty good moments on it. This one swings!
It was first released on the New, Live & Rare EP that came 1977 and on the compilation Powerhouse that also came 1977. It wasn't on the album they said, When We Rock, We Rock And When We Roll, We Roll.
And The Address (Shades of Deep Purple) Wring That Neck (The Book Of Taliesyn) ... does that count as deep track or is it too well known? Into The Fire (In Rock) Pictures Of Home (Machine Head) Son Of Alerik (bonus track on the CD version of Perfect Strangers). I know it is a pretty unfocused jam but I love it ;-) Loosen My Strings (Purpendicular) Any Fule Kno That (Abandon)
"Maybe I'm a Leo" is on the "Live at the Olympia 96" Live Album. Pretty nice version. So is "Pictures of Home". It's a very good Live Album. You should check it out.
Deep cuts from the first 4 Mk2 albums. 1. Into The Fire - In Rock 2. Demon's Eye - Fireball 3. Pictures Of Home - Machine Head 4. Smooth Dancer - Who do We Think We Are.
April (Deep Purple s/t - 1969. The most important legacy that Mk I left to Mk II. Excellent prog and hard rock elements from the most experimental album of their career.) Cry free (In Rock Outtake - 1970. I don't understand why it wasn't included in the original album) Dealer (Come Taste the Band - 1975. This pretty good song has only been played twice in 1976 concerts, and is worth it for Bolin's amazing guitar solo. Come Taste is NOT a Purple album, but is one of my favorite Purple albums!!!
In the early 70's they could only put so many songs on each side of an LP, not sure why. So the band had to decide which to leave off. Personally I would have left Never Before off Machine Head and just released it as a 45, and When A Blind Man Cries would have been on the album. Maybe the closing track. Come Taste The Band obviously IS a Purple album but it has a different sound. Going by your logic you would say that Stormbringer is not a Purple album as a lot of the songs were not done in a recognised Purple style.
@@CB-xr1eg I agree with your comment on Stormbringer, just Come Taste the Band took it even further, some songs are genuine rock 'n roll or funk rock, some jazzy dribs from here and there, elements that Blackmore didn't like.
DEEP- DEEP PURPLE Shades of Purple- One More Rainy Day Fireball- No- No- No Machine Head- Never Before Who Do We Think We Are?- Place in Line Burn- Sail Away Perfect Strangers- Mean Streak House of Blue Light- Mad Dog Battle Rages On- Lick it Up Rapture of the Deep- Wrong Man Now What?- Apres Vous- Instrumental Infinite- Get Me Outta Here
With respect to your guest, I believe Painted Horse is on the Powerhouse compilation. My pics: Flight Of The Rat, Fools, Rat Bat Blue, Solitaire, Jack Ruby.
True, and while I think he said it was on "When We Rock, We Rock and When We Roll, We Roll" (which was the next compilation released), but Powerhouse was unreleased material.
My Top 10:
-This Time Around/Owed to 'G' (Come Taste The Band)
-The Spanish Archer (The House Of The Blue Light)

-A Simple Song(Now What?!)
-Hell To Pay (Now What?!)

- Pictures of Home
- Contact Lost (one of the most beautiful instrumentals ever)
- Son of Alerik (I'm so grateful it was added to the CD reissue of Perfect Strangers)
- All I Got Is You (the best track from InFinite, love it)
- Wasted Sunsets
- Fools
- The Battle Rages On
- Holy Man
- Strange Kind of Woman (I know it's a hit but I consider it a bit of a deep cut since it's a non-album track)
Guitar keyboard interplay soloing wow.
My loved Deep Dive Purple songs
- One Man's Meat
- Never Before
- Might Just Take Your Life
- You Keep On Movin'
- You Can't Do it Right (With the One You Love)
- Emmaretta
- Coronarias Redig

So glad you picked A Simple Song! Being in my 20s, Now What was the first album that was released after I discovered (and became obsessed with) the band, and I was super excited to get it on its release. Perfect song to start the album. Hits you like a train when it kicks in and Don Airey absolutely nails it. Great video!
Chasing Shadows, Fire In The Basement and Anya are my favorite deep cuts of Deep Purple.
Since MK1 is rarely discussed or given any props most of my picks are from that time:
Why didn’t Rosemary
The Painter
The bird has flown
April
Hallelujah
This was the best deep dive show ever...I listen to most of them and enjoy but usually don’t find that many that competes with the high profile songs but with DP I loved every song you guys picked. ..Guess that says something about the band. Just swesome.
Thanks very much, Bill!!
Just a few of the many. Chronological:
"Flight Of The Rat" from In Rock
"Holy Man" from Stormbringer
"This Time Around / Owed To 'G'" from Come Taste The Band
"Picture Of Innocence" from Bananas
"Before Time Began" from Rapture Of The Deep
Thanks, Pete & Jack!
Brilliant show buddy brilliant 👍🏼🏴🤟
My favorite deep cuts:
Mach 1:
The Painter - groovy guitar cranking hard heavy Hammond organ surging
April - epic masterpiece by early purple starts off mellow with and orchestra and then explodes with a heavy conclusion sort of reminds me of Musical box by Genesis
Mach 2:
Not Responsible - up tempo bluesy rocker also has an F Bomb from Ian.
Bloodsucker - Another classic showcasing the brilliance and the talents of each band member.
Mach 3:
Might Just Take Your Life - Bluesy awesome trade off with vocalists a little R&B sorta like a song by Sly and the Family Stone
Mine is
Off the 1st album Shades of Deep Purple And the Address.
....the new album, WHOOSH is killer. Lotta DEEP cuts!
My first and most beloved rock band EVER!
Some of my favorite deep cuts: Shield, Chasing Shadows, Bloodsucker, Demon’s Eye, Sail Away, You Can’t Do It Right, Dealer, This Time Around/Owed to G
I’ve not heard much after they reunited in the 80s. Sure I’ve missed out some good stuff.
My favorite "deep" cuts:
- When a blind man cries
- Demon's eye
- Pictures of home
- Into the fire
(Sure every true fan knows and loves these songs but these are for the ones who have only heard Smoke on the water, Highway star, Perfect strangers etc.) should listen
When A Blindman Cries! Wonderful tune!
@@memphissoulstew Absolutely and for some crazy reason left off Machine Head..it would have made it an even better album!
My deep cuts...
"Wring That Kneck" from "The Book of Taliesyn" (1968)
"Bloodsucker" from "In Rock" (1970)
"When a Blind Man Cries" from "Never Before" single (1972)
"Soldier of Fortune" from "Stormbringer" (1974)
"Back to Back" from "Rapture of the Deep" (2005)
At last someone mentions Wring that neck.
@@regev1970 Most probably didn't because it's on several compilations and live albums.
Regev1970 it’s such a great song. Probably my favorite instrumental of theirs and definitely my favorite pre in rock song
Loosen my Strings
Fortune teller
Mad Dog
A Gypsy's kiss
Demon's Eye
Loosen My Strings is criminally underrated.
I love Slaves and masters
@@allornadaaccordingtojack7601 I think Slaves and Masters is a pretty good album . It has some nice songs on it .
best purple deep cut and best track ever...'when a blind man cries'....
1. Flight Of The Rat- In Rock
2. Place In Line- Who Do We Think We Are ( Gillan uses his lower register )
3. A Touch Away- A quiet song with great melody and lyrics from Purpendicular
4. House Of Pain- Bananas
Agreed
Thanks for another great review Pete
My top five rare tracks are
Mitzi Dupree
Love Don't Mean A Thing
Solitaire
Sun Goes Down
A Simple Song
Some excellent Deep Tracks from DP:
Slow Train (bonus song on Fireball)
Smooth Dancer (Who Do We Think We Are)
Too Much Is Not Enough (Slaves and Masters)
Somebody Stole My Guitar (Purpendicular)
Jack Ruby (Abandon)
very nice show. out of all your guests, jack is my favourite. i hope my deep cut suggestion fits the defenition, but at least it's not a very well known song. from their third album: april.
Thanks so much for saying that, qroggle!! And thank you for watching.
What came to my mind immediately? Freedom, When A Blind Man Cries and Not Responsible
1. Hard Lovin Man
2. Living Wreck
3. Fools
4. No One Came
5. Lay Down, Stay Down
Honorable mentions
Slow Train
Lady Double Dealer
Grabsplatter..
- Wring that neck (favorite pre In Rock deep cut)
- Kentucky woman (love love LOVE the keyboards)
- Pictures of home (favorite song off that album and favorite mark II part 1 song)
- A Gypsy’s kiss (favorite mark II part 2 song)
- Hallelujah (found this gem courtesy of Pete’s History of Deep Purple video!)
- Anyone’s daughter (so unlike the rest of that album)
- Sail away (sooooo bluesy and I LOVE it. Second favorite Coverdale song only behind Burn)
Many thanx Pete and Jack
Painted Horse is actually developed out of Grabsplatter or Jam Stew two early instrumentals of MKII
Listen to the version of Fools on Live at Ahoy with Orchestra it outstands the studio version.
The in concert album contains the complete Machine Head live.
They Played Rat Bat Blue in 96 in England a few times. But it does not work live.I think even the great late Jon Lord had Problems to play this very fast organ solo live.
"Hungry Daze", "Maybe I'm a Leo", "Not Responsible", "Under the Gun", "Mean Streak", "A Gypsy's Kiss", "Wicked Ways", "Mary Long"
"Bloodsucker" from In Rock really kicks it for me.
As producer Martin Birch said “ Deep Purple were the best at what they did ... without a shadow of doubt“
1- Why didn’t Rosemary (ever take the pill) 1969 album called Deep Purple. Great solos from Ritchie.
2- And the address. 1968 Shades of Deep Purple. Great expansive psychedelic instrumental. Soaring swooping solo from Ritchie which Hendrix liked apparently.
3- No No No . 1971 from Fireball. Great vocals and whole band performance
4- Twist in the tale 1992 ??. The battle rages on.
5- Son of Alrik. Great instrumental/jam/outtake by the band from a single b side in 1974. Longer version on, I think the remaster of Burn. Always felt they could have developed it into a long form prog masterpiece with lyrics.
Perhaps more of a Rainbow song ( It was recorded a year or so before Rainbow formed)
6- Coronarias redig. B side instrumental from Burn era 1973/4.
7 - Silver tongue from Bananas. Just brilliant playing/arrangement/groove.
nice job pete and jack pete picked my number 1
1 seventh heaven
never before
our lady
ted the mechanic
black and white
They are too much!!
My deep cut beside your great choices is "Son of Alerik" from the Perfect Strangers session's 84
It's funny how those deep cuts don't necessary stand out when listening to a whole album, but when listening to them single-style they seem to be the greatest songs. Because they are.
Ted the Mechanic is a kick ass underrated DP song !
No One Came
Rat Bat Blue
Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming
Pictures Of Home
This Time Around/Owed To G
Gents! ...great choices.

Here’s mine.
1. Flight of the Rat
2. Nobody’s home
3. Hallelujah
4. The surprising
5. Above and Beyond
Very nice!! I learned about "Kentucky Woman" from that album, another great tune. Thank you for watching.
@@allornadaaccordingtojack7601 Me too! And I really like that song. That's a pretty deep cut, too.
My goodness, I'm tripping out! I seriously never thought I would be having a conversation about such a random album. LOL
This is great. I am making a Playlist of all the Deep Cut Dive sessions.
Hard Lovin' Man (In Rock)
One More Rainy Day (Shades of Deep Purple)
Wring That Neck (The Book of Taliesyn)
Listen, Learn, Read On (The Book of Taliesyn)
Hopefully, those 4 qualify.
Mark I gets very little love, so I focused more on that one.
Jack nailed it: Hard Lovin' Man was always my favorite tune on In Rock, and they burn it up on that one!
Hard lovin man is great but is it deep track?
Depends. You'd be surprised to know the amount of Deep Purple fans I know who've never even heard of In Rock, let alone anything from it (I'm serious.)
I think it's quite deep
Thanks D T 195!! Hard Lovin Man is one of the BEST Deep Tracks I have ever heard, period. Plus, I find it very hard to believe that any DP has never heard In Rock. That album absolutely kills from top to bottom.
Love Sail Away!
Cry Free - An outtake from the In Rock Sessions
Freedom - An outtake from the Fireball sessions.
Both great tracks.
Mk.
There’s a ton of great songs I could’ve picked for this task, but here’s my top 5 (in chronological order):
1. Shield (The Book Of Taliesyn)
2. The Painter (Deep Purple)
3. Cry Free (In Rock bonus track)
4. No No No (Fireball)
Come taste the band, one of my favourite purple albums, song by song its up there with the best.
April.
Dealer.
Place in the line.
Wicked ways.
The aviator
My selection of their songs I love: Coronarias Redig (Burn extra track), Love Child (Come Taste..), The Aviator (Purpendicular), Anya and Solitaire (both from The Battle Rages On).
1. Living Wreck
2. No One Came
3. Maybe I'm a Leo
4. Rat Bat Blue
5. Sail Away
6. The Gypsy
King of dreams one of my favorite songs
For me-a five
1. Grabsplatter
2.Bird Has Flown, Gillan vocal
3. Rat Bat Blue--for the keys solo
4. Flight Of The Rat---one of my all time fav Lord solo's
1 know you are very busy a couple of suggestions for top ten songs of candlemass tool zero hour and down keep up the good work love the channel Pete
1, April ,a twelve minuet epic - from deep purple 3rd album mark 1
2, Flight of the rat ,from In rock,
3,Painted horse , studio out take from Who do we think we are,
4, A 200 ,A instrumental from Burn, love it,
5 The surprising , from Infinite, brilliant song and great video
Well actually if you have Apple Music they have a live album with both Maybe I’m a Leo & Never Before. The live album it’s called In Concert 1970/1972
Yes sir I have that release also excellent
Pictures of home is never played live to my knowledge. So that’s my favorite deep cut.
1) out of hand ( now what)
2) loosen my strings ( purpendicular)
3)wrong man ( rapture of the deep)
4) Vincent price ( now what)
5) fingers to the bone ( abandon)

One More Rainy Day
Hard Lovin' Man
High Ball Shooter
Smooth Dancer
Fools
I'm Alone
Cry Free
5. Mean Streak
4. Bludsucker
3. Mitzi Dupree
2. Pictures of Home
1. Love Don't Mean a Thing
( prediction: Pete pics at least one song from each Coverdale release and Jack picks a single)
interesting choices. House of the Blue Light is quite enjoyable if you´re in the mood for some well-executed AOR, but i never understood why they had to do a rehash of Bloodsucker on the Abandon record
Mitzi Dupree, The queen of the ping pong...Such a great song with hilarious lyrics!
@@henrikv3199 Yeah, but that version rips.
1) hard lovin man ( in rock)
2) no no no ( fireball)
3) not responsible ( perfect strangers)
4 Spanish archer ( house of blue light)
5) pictures of home ( machine head)
1. Rat Bat Blue (Who Do We Think We Are)
2. Sail Away (Burn)
3. Lady Luck (Come Taste The Band)
4. A Gypsy's Kiss (Perfect Strangers)
5. The Spanish Archer (The House Of Blue Light)
It's so hard for me to name just 5 "hidden gems" by Deep Purple, so I'll just pick on not well known track from every album, though this is really hard too, because I just love 99% of what this band ever played.
1. Love Help Me, from their debut Shades of Deep Purple
2. Listen, Learn, Read On, from The Book Of Taliesyn.
3. The Painter, from their self-titled album. Although April is a masterpiece, but I think it's more known.
4. Living Wreck, from Deep Purple In Rock
5. I'm Alone, a B Side from Fireball
6. No No No, from Fireball, since I'll skip Machine Head, simply because it's all hits, so I'd drop one more song from Fireball.
7. Place In Line, from Who Do We Think We Are (I'm trying to avoid the songs mentioned in the video)
8. What's Goin' On Here, from Burn. People tend to skip this song, I don't know why, I find it groovy.
9. Love Don't Mean a Thing, from Stormbringer
10. Drifter, from Come Taste the Band
11. Mean Streak, from Perfect Sstrangers
12. Mitzi Dupree, from The House Of Blue Light
13. Fire in the Basement, from Slaves and Masters. It was played live on this album's tour.
14. Nasty Piece Of Work, from The Battle Rages On
15. Soon Forgotten, from Purpendicular
16. Jack Ruby, from ABandOn
17. Picture of Innocence, from Bananas

I can't rank 5 so here are my top 10 deep cuts (sorry):
1. Chasing Shadows (Deep Purple) 1969
2. Anyone's Daughter (Fireball) 1971
3. Rat Bat Blue (Who do We think We Are) 1973
4. Sail Away (Burn) 1974
5. Love don't mean a thing (Stormbringer) 1974
6. Cut Runs Deep (Slaves & masters) 1990
7. Somebody Stole My Guitar (Purpendicular) 1996
8. Don't Make Me Happy (Abandon) 1998
9. Sun Goes Down (Bananas) 2003
10. Out Of Hand (Now What!) 2013
Can't get any deeper than This time around/Owed to G
This was an easy one for me. Not a huge fan of anything beyond the MK II & III albums. So....
01) Bloodsucker
02) Demon's Eye
03) Never Before
04) Smooth Dancer
05) Stormbringer
My Top 5 Deep Cut Dive from Deep Purple:
- One More Rainy Day
Rod Evans and Jon Lord wrote a rather 60's poppy tune. Far from what Deep Purple is known for but I like it. One of my favorites of the first album.
- April
Early epic from the band. Not "Child in Time" but I have no clue why this song isn't more famous!
- No One Came
Not the bands most perfect song but that's why I like it. It always sound fresh to me. Would never been a big hit but just love it!
Holy Man
- Ritchie Blackmore didn't like Glenn Hughes direction on Stormbringer. I'm guessing this is a track he really didn't like but I do. Think Glenn Hughes sound great on this one!
Picture of Innocence
- "Bananas" might be the most obscure album from the band but it has some pretty good moments on it. This one swings!
No One Came is more than a perfect song.
Wasn't "Painted Horse" on the b-side of one of the singles released at the time?
It was first released on the New, Live & Rare EP that came 1977 and on the compilation Powerhouse that also came 1977. It wasn't on the album they said, When We Rock, We Rock And When We Roll, We Roll.
1) Flight of the Rat 2) Fools 3) Coming Home 4) King of Dreams 5) Anya 👍
King Of Dreams and Anya are my favorite from those two albums
The Shield, Super Trooper, Sail Away,This Time Around & Gettin’Tighter.
And The Address (Shades of Deep Purple)
Wring That Neck (The Book Of Taliesyn) ... does that count as deep track or is it too well known?
Into The Fire (In Rock)
Pictures Of Home (Machine Head)
Son Of Alerik (bonus track on the CD version of Perfect Strangers). I know it is a pretty unfocused jam but I love it ;-)
Loosen My Strings (Purpendicular)
Any Fule Kno That (Abandon)
"Maybe I'm a Leo" is on the "Live at the Olympia 96" Live Album. Pretty nice version. So is "Pictures of Home". It's a very good Live Album. You should check it out.
Deep cuts from the first 4 Mk2 albums.
1. Into The Fire - In Rock
2. Demon's Eye - Fireball
3. Pictures Of Home - Machine Head
4. Smooth Dancer - Who do We Think We Are.
You know that Jon Lord had the track slowed down to play that solo in Rat Bat Blue right?
April (Deep Purple s/t - 1969. The most important legacy that Mk I left to Mk II. Excellent prog and hard rock elements from the most experimental album of their career.)
Cry free (In Rock Outtake - 1970. I don't understand why it wasn't included in the original album)
Dealer (Come Taste the Band - 1975.
That guitar riff on Rat Bat Blue is the keyboard part from Woman From Tokyo sped up...check it out.
DEEP- DEEP PURPLE
Shades of Purple- One More Rainy Day
Fireball- No- No- No
Machine Head- Never Before
Who Do We Think We Are?- Place in Line
Burn- Sail Away
Perfect Strangers- Mean Streak
House of Blue Light- Mad Dog
Battle Rages On- Lick it Up
Rapture of the Deep- Wrong Man
Now What?- Apres Vous- Instrumental
Infinite- Get Me Outta Here
Best part of this: The bit about the new record being heavier! Finally Morse has been allowed to play riffs?
With respect to your guest, I believe Painted Horse is on the Powerhouse compilation.
My pics: Flight Of The Rat, Fools, Rat Bat Blue, Solitaire, Jack Ruby.
True, and while I think he said it was on "When We Rock, We Rock and When We Roll, We Roll" (which was the next compilation released), but Powerhouse was unreleased material.
Yes, I looked it up. My mistake, although I do try to always have my facts straight. Thanks!!
