  • EPISODE #175: Ted asks about how God’s law in the Ten Commandments still applies to Christian believers. Rod talks about how rough God’s law is for sinners, the relationship between the law and Christ’s Gospel, and points to the book of Galatians to help clarify a healthy balance for sinners in light of Jesus’ perfect fulfillment of the law.

Interesting that in coming from a Heinz 57 evangelical framework, this grand distinction was little if ever brought forward. I'm sure I heard from Paul that "the Law is a tutor to bring us to Christ." But the necessity of hearing and understanding the place of the two great doctrines of the Bible (per the Small Catechism), is something I gained in Lutheranism. God be praised. Your discussions are always helpful. And needed. God's peace to you both and all the 1517 crew.

Yes, the Ten Commandments still apply to today's world.
The one Commandment that doesn't come forward to this New Testament era we are in now is a Saturday sabbath. Jesus instructs us to worship God in Spirit and in Truth....we do not need to wait for a certain day or time to worship...we must have the right attitude and heart for our worship to be acceptable to God.
Some years ago I taught this as a 10 lesson series at the Massachusetts Treatment Center. The MTC is a medium security prison in Bridgewater..the men who listened were fascinated and the Institutional Chaplain was amazed at what I was teaching. He replied, Where did you get this teaching???!!!
I said back, Just read your Bible !!!
The Bible does indeed interpret itself.
Also, Psalm 19:7 states: " the Law of the Lord is perfect converting the soul."
Consider that all Laws that we encounter in every day life has a basis in the Bible. The most important is simply to Love God and Love one another.
Very good show. God bless you brothers.
    Miss Monique 🙂🙏🌷💗

Can you clarify the three uses of the law? In my learning from a reformed perspective it is spoken of the uses of the law. I understand that the Lutheran tradition does the same but orders them differently. So in my understanding is that the moral law still applies to Christians in that it is a rule for living, but no longer hammers us in the first use of conviction for sin.
“The heart is more deceitful than all else
    And is desperately sick;
    Who can understand it?

Can you please teach me how to find the LAW and GOSPEL in a passage.

In general terms, whenever we are told what we must do or must not do, that is law. When we are told what God has done and continues to do for us, that is gospel. Not every passage in the Bible contains both. Some contain neither, but in the overall structure of the Bible you will find both doctrines, law and gospel, interwoven throughout bodh the old and new testaments.

The Law reveals I deserve to be beat to death and it does. The Law reveals I am utterly undeserving of anything but death -- an absolute disaster. Yet God provides a way for me to die and yet live and His justice is served. He gives me justice which is death. However, by faith He has given me what I deserve by the death of Christ. Faith puts me into Christ (taken out of Adam). In Christ's death I died and got what I deserved -- in Christ I was beaten and tortured to death. Being in Him when he died I also live in His resurrection because Christ deserves life.

Silly question. Of course we need to follow the ten commandments. Jesus Christ Himself said "Follow My Commands". Need one say more?

@Flagrum3 What we are implicitly addressing is the teaching too common in many American churches in which one's salvation, and the risk of losing it, is connected to how much, how often, how well, how consistently one strives to follow God's law, including the 10 Commandments. The problem becomes the moment we sinners perceive the law as 'doable', we need Jesus less and begin to 'save ourselves' with our works. Jesus clarified just how not doable the law is for us sinners so that, in part, we might give up to ourselves and instead trust only in Him for our salvation, Who is sufficient to save us, even while we sin against Him.

@@tedrosenbladt9976 Nothing you stated negates my comment. We must strive to follow the commandments. Obvious to the point is that we need Gods graces to do so, and we must deny ourselves. Denying oneself and following the laws are works btw.

@@Flagrum3 The point is that when Christians are hammered with "you must..." (which is law) to the point that they start to distance themselves from Christ and His faith, out of sheer weariness among other things, do we have better news for such people? Regarding our salvation, did Christ finish the work necessary to save us, or did He not?

Of course the 10 commandments apply to Christians. God blesses Christians that obey the commandments, and disciplines them when they disobey them. The righteousness that comes from the law cannot justify, because this righteousness is not perfect, no man can keep the law perfectly. But anybody that reads the book of proverbs should know that there is the righteousness of the Law and that God rewards those that obey the Law and punishes those that disobey the Law, King David learned the righteousness of the Law that applied to him when his first son with Bathsheba died. David was justified before God by the righteousness of faith, but was punished on his earthly life by failing to keep God's commandments. and lost rewards in heaven as a result of his disobedience to God's law, for God is a just God that will judge us according to our works (2 corinthians 5:10). Even though Chris's righteousness is imputed to us and our sins are laid on Jesus, this does not mean that we will not be judged by what we do in the body here on earth. Luther understood this perfectly, the concept of reward based on works at judgment day cannot be ditched without corrupting the Scripture. As Luther (and Augustine) saw it, the good works of a Christian are evidence of God's grace and are rewarded at judgment day, see this article on Luther's view of the importance of good works on judgment day. ms.fortresspress.com/downloads/9781451462708_sample_chapter.pdf

Silly question. Jesus commanded the Jews those he led out of Egypt to obey all the laws and statutes and commandments and holidays. If you don't do all, it's a sin. According to God. The good news is he wasn't talking to Christians. Ever. Jews are commanded to do all. We are commanded to love God and love our neighbor as ourselves. It's that simple. There's not one scripture in the Bible that says Christians have to obey all the laws and commandments of the Jews.
