The comment about rural living strikes a chord with me also. We often forget that a lot of JA immigrants were country folk who, when we came to the UK, ended up in cities - and they were grimy cities that seemed perpetually shrouded in chimney smoke and grey depressing slums back then. My father (recently deceased) worked in a job far removed from his country life in St James, JA, as a miner at Gedling colliery in Nottingham.
Sorry for your loss. I personally cannot imagine what a shock to the system it was for your dad and what huge challenges he and his countrymen and women faced back then in particular. Rest in peace.

Hi I was born and brought up just down the road from Gedling pit, some of my family also worked down the same pit and I went to Gedling comp school which overlooked the pit as well, funny how things have changed now as the old Gedling pit is now a very rural country park visited by many people each day.

If you ever get the opportunity to meet Charlie Phillips he loves people and will converse with anyone and everyone. I love bumping into him, he is both humble and charismatic and always upbeat joking. At one time he stopped taking photos until his work was discovered and he returned to his love in documenting life and people. He's an unknown national treasure to many, but very well known and beloved in the Black London arts community. Loves to flirt, and the women love flirting with him. So glad Charlie's work over the years is being appreciated.
So nice to see charlie getting the recognition he truly deserves. I’ve been inspired by him since discovering his work whilst at university doing my art degree, back in the early 2000s. So nice to keep seeing your face popping up and congratulations on the OBE ❤️❤️
Great to see this gentleman on video. What a lovely character and artist. Thanks to You Tube I have now the pleasure of knowing about him and will be viewing his work and learning. 📸🤙🏼
This NEEDS to be longer! At least half hr!! Definitely want to hear more from this man!💯
Would love to see more of his work. Thanks for this.
"We're apart of your culture rather you like it or not."
And who's saying otherwise?

I loved that! He says it assertively but with warmth and without any aggressiveness.
And of course he is right!
What a special person The soul of an artist and all round good person

Lovely vignette into this gentleman's life and his wonderful work. Thanks for posting this.
Great video. Amazing story. I love the music at the end. Shazam not picking up. Anyone knows who the artist is?
This really resonated and inspired me an islander of colour, trying to make it in the UK as a photographer. Thanks for sharing.
Great! I have to do some research on Charlie, as an amateur photographer myself, I agree with his sentiment. 'country folk' of Jamaica 🇯🇲 are plentiful here in the UK 🇬🇧 -- Clarendon represent - I would love to meet him one day 👍🏾
Does he have site for his pictures. Would love to see look for a picture or two (or more) to ordre a print of.
A perfect short film about life’s needs out weighing our wishes. Service to others…
Wow everyday I’m glad to be Jamaican. Love this video and history!
Simply Epic in every aspect!
Can someone tell me what is the track playing at the end? Apps say Big Sky by Cooliger but I am not able to find it
Hello!! Im still looking for that jazz final tune. I think is a version of the song Big Sky by Dean Sorenson but this version is different. Sounds like Mehliana or something alike but can't find it still. Great video, awesome edit
I could have watched a feature length version of this.
Wonderful, friendly and kind gentleman who is inspirational. Sometimes recognition comes late but it is well deserved. Great choice of soundtrack too BTW
Thank you, i like videos series like this one, many of the greats are overlooked while alive.

Glad I got to see this video. I never heard of Charlie Phillips until now. Sad to say, like many creatives of Color, Charlie's work was overlooked.
This is one video on RUclips that is way to short.
Fantastic. Thank you for this!
What a great man a great soul, a great photographer . Robin Witting

Amazing video on an greatly inspiring artist. Thank you very much
May I ask if anyone has information about the end song?
I’m glad I watched this. Looks like he earned that OBE!
The term ' take a photograph doesn't do justice to the process. More accurate is the phrase, 'made the exposure' . And there's no taking involved..
though many will squabble over this ! Language is precious & it suffers in the hands of the uncaring. The Westons, Adams, never stumbled about shortcutting this process. They were extremely passionate & devoted to the precise mechanics about lens work. They weren't snobs though in the minds of some seemed so. I imagine as modern times rolled into place, serious photography may have taken a hit . The trend was to move & develop fast..sell sell sell. Degrees of heart felt delicacy fell to the way side.
You really do make the most beautiful films, Nowness
Some say it's not where you are from but where you are, but I will claim Mr. Phillips as a Jamaican.
