Recognizing that you two fly with a different style and allowing him to do what works for him is very impressive. Not many people have the ability to trust others, especially students, in that way. I have met many people that felt the way they did things was the only acceptable way. Great job, both of you.
He's had a lot of solo hours and he's finding some things that work for him. They aren't unsafe. Plus, that's how you get really dialed in as a pilot, when you can experiment with the fundamentals and do new things. Thanks!
Exactly. I was lucky enough to have 2 instructors, and even though both of them would be "tight" on how we should do things, reality is they had different styles. So this immediately let me know that there is indeed some "room" to find also what works for you... other things, not so much. So I see it as part of our job as pilots to find out what we are really doing wrong, and what is simply a different style. Not easy sometimes!
This is great. I laughed when he forgot to flare. I did the exact same thing when first doing crosswind landings. All the focus on that aileron and I forgot I still had to flare. 😆 Nice job all around!
I really like your instruction style. Well done. Congratulations to Leif for making PP. I don't think I could ever learn too much about crosswind landings. Videos like this one add to whats in the memory banks. I appreciate it. I like to practice crosswind landings. Some days they go well and are fun... some days the wind is smarter than me and they could be improved. I am fortunate to be able to fly where my home airport (FMN) is on the top of a mesa. Wind, crosswind, and wind shear are all part of flying here.
That will make you a really sharp pilot when it's a normal part of flying at your home airport. Sure makes it easy when there isn't a lot of wind elsewhere! Thanks for the great comment.
I've done the same thing @ 19.27, where I cut the power to idle too soon and I got that hard bump. Great video! I hope Leif has a successful checkride.
He did pass his checkride! He's a pilot now. He actually bought an airplane while we were doing our final prep, and came home and basically he's been flying the pants off the thing since.
That's awesome that you don't have to worry about crosswinds that often. Here in South Dakota, we are always dealing with some type of crosswind. The first few times I shot approaches without a crosswind seemed really strange to me! Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks! Yeah, generally it blows right down the bay, either way. Don't get a crosswind unless we have a system moving through, and even then it only lasts a few hours.
Chris, I'm new to the channel and a helicopter guy. I'm looking at an airplane purchase in the future and I look forward to having you as a SOLID resource for getting my add-ons and getting comfortable in the "stuck wing" world. Thanks for your hard work and dedication. I appreciate you.
Enjoyed the video, starting to tie up the loose ends before check ride. As a side note I brought my ship into Homer anchorage in 1990. A seven hundred foot chemical tanker.
29:37 What were the two fingers about? Was the CFI telling him he missed traffic? I'm not a pilot or even a student (yet) so just curious what that was all about.
I think it would be more useful for pilots if the camera was at the pilot iview on landing as opposed to on the wing. Then the pilot can look at the aiming point and observe the round out and flare from the vantage point, that we would have, not from the wing or the tail.
Tried to get my PPL several years ago. Being in Kansas, crosswind takeoffs and landings is a daily thing that I never could get a grasp of. Forty years later I still have an ache to finish what I started so may years ago.
Found you through Mr Aviation 101 loved the AK videos! Currently working on my commercial but seriously thinking of coming up in June 2020 to earn my sea wings through Alaska Float and Skis. I know it’s months away but would love to arrange a time to do some bush flying with you. Thanks!
Great job on teaching and vids ,if I can ask can you make a short vid of your vid setup on the plane or maybe a product review .Please and thanks keep up the good work !
Leif- my instructor said this to me which helped made sure I check for final traffic " The runway isn't going anywhere.. but that traffic you don't see is" lol
I’m a curious beginning student pilot. My CFI has started me out using a side slip on the landing approach to handle crosswind landings. What is the advantage of crabbing most of the way and then transitioning to a side slip just before flaring? Thanks.
@@angleofattack sorry, didn't mean to chime in prematurely... I heard that phrase early in my PPL training and I had no clue either... Thanks for what you do!!! Good Job!!
Angle of Attack Won’t be often, I’m still pretty green, I’m 62 and got my PPL @60, IFR @61... we did fly to The Bahamas recently, that was a great learning experience!!

Chris, I like how you are so chill as an instructor while also being effective.
I learned from some amazing people. I'm just a mashup of them.

"First crosswind landing!"
"We're still alive, too." 😆👍
Later: "Those guys are never on the radio." 🦅😂
I totally missed that he said that! Funny! Leif is a character.
Wished I lived in Homer so I could take lessons from Chris - such great teaching style and technique. Love these videos!

Mark Kuhn thanks Mark! What’s bringing you over to fixed wing? I’m sure you’ll fit right in!
Just wanting to be able to fly my family to fun destinations. Flying the airlines with a family is difficult at best.
Great stuff, CPL student myself and still learning new tricks!
That's pretty wild thanks for sharing
You're welcome!

Oh wow cool! Good luck on the checkride!
I’m also enjoyed! More videos like this! Good luck Chris!
Will do!
Another great video. Keep them coming...!
Great video thanks to you both for sharing. So many things can be learned from a different perspective.
Yeah, I felt like this was really packed full.
Ooooo a new channel I"ll have to subscribe to!
Great to have you, Dan! Thanks for all the great comments recently.
Really enjoyed this one mate! 👍🏼
Happy to hear! Thanks for watching.
Extremely grateful for this video
Glad it was helpful!

Hi my name is Francien Van Zyl From South Africa Witbank..... Thank you for your videos, has inspired me through my course...private pilot trainee
Thank you for sharing. This helps a lot. Great flying!
Excellent video. Great job with piloting skills! Good to see xwinds in Homer! Great CFI!
"And we're still alive, too!" - AWESOME, I like this guy :)
Hey, thanks! Leif was great to work with.
I wished I could train some with you. I think it would help with my skills and confidence. Thank you for the videos.
Maybe some day, eh?
Nice lesson, nice instruction 👍👍👍✈️✈️✈️
John Nunez thanks John! Have you done crosswind landings?
The day my ship comes in I’ll hop to Alaska and you’ll be my teacher ☝️
I love cross wind landings. JKRF Honolulu. Pretty much very day is a crosswind challenge.

I do it all the time! Just reach out to me and give me dates and we'll see if things line up. Happy to have you on board!
Sounds great man thanks!
Great video. Crosswind landings or something I struggle with as a student.
nice video, do you advocate the carb in rather than wing down method? any preference? for any reasons in particular?

Thanks, Jason.
Great Lesson. Munter bleiben, as we say in Germany.
Thank you!

how do I click LIKE about 50 times??? Love this. x-winds never made sense to me, this helped a lot

Very cool...thank you....
youve found the alaskan adam LZ hahah. great video
Thanks!
Thanks so much for the support! *Her First Solo!* ---> ruclips.net/video/Zhmqyx_fujE/видео.html
in west texas we only have crosswind landings
Ain't that the truth!
Nice and informative... :P
Glad you thought so.
@@angleofattack I see myself in that student. Knowing Im not allone in forgetting things is allso good to remember. For me... It´s carb heat.
Is that a braille CTR ring?!
Alaska CTR ring. :)
Curious about the 'closed traffic' call...maybe my own ignorance, but any chance you could elaborate...?
Means you're staying in the Pattern, Closed Traffic, not departing the area....

I've never heard of an airport where crosswinds are rare, ever, anywhere.....
Literally every runway is aligned with prevailing winds whenever possible. It’s why the Wright Brothers flew at Kill Devil Hills.
@Angle of Attack runway 17/35 shows xwind @ 9kts @ KMQI. KEDE is only 42NM @290 magnetic and they show xwind VRB @7 KTS. Metar reported@2110Z
Your radio voice annoys me (the student). Good flying.
