  • The EdgeRouter X is an entry-level router with some interesting features. It can be powered by a power adapter or via PoE. It also includes a PoE passthrough port to power one additional PoE device.
In this video, I unbox and perform initial setup on the EdgeRouter X. I also do a small amount of PoE testing to figure out the capabilities of the device.

Thanks for your video. I am in the process of switching from one ISP at home to another and the current one offers a router / cable modem combo unit (DHCP, FW, etc, Port Forward) the new one only provides a cable modem. I picked up one of these routers yesterday and have loved the flexibility it provides. It allowed me to build a parallel network to the one at my house (using only my laptop on the new ISP) - Once the network was up all I had to do was swing the LAN feed from the old router / cable modem to the Edgerouter X. Same IP space defined and none of the clients knew anything had happened. So for me the application was I didn't want to spend $5 / month for a router from the ISP, but wanted all the tools that the old combo unit had. This provides that !! thanks for the video

Hey man;) Just an advice in regards to the wattage on that adapter you got with your edge router: if you try to pull too much power from that, you might end up stressing it beyond safe operating conditions (SOC). This could in turn result in a fire hazard. So now you know:) thanks for posting.

This one is so stable to play as your core router, and make your wifi router as only wifi coverage device. it has been used for more than 3months without a reboot. and the size of it is so tiny to impose in anyplace you want it to be.

I just saw this on the Unifi AP specs.. "Passive Power over Ethernet (12-24V)" The 24 volts is the unit's maximum input voltage, companys do so to get the maximum possible power through the wireless radio, but the power circuitry can actually go down to 12 volts and the unit will continue to work. Thus is why you were able to power the unit with the 12 volt power supply. I guess there's probably also a voltage multiplier that also steps up the voltage if required, but that just a guess.

TL;DR The Access Point only requires 4Watts of power __AND__ it accepts 12V or 24V of input. This is IMPORTANT. The wall wart provided is more than enough. Not to mention that the Wall Wart has to power the Router itself so I doubt it can push 12V@0.5Amps to a device via the PoE and still provide power to the Router. Doesn't matter for the Access Point though as it doesn't use that much power.
Look at the UniFi AP specifications it accepts 12V and 24V input. dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_AP_DS.pdf page 11. It's maximum power consumption is 4W meaning the PoE pass-through needs to be 12V@0.3A or 24V@0.15A. The wall wart which comes with this EdgeRouter meets those requirements, thus the reason it turns on.
As to whether the EdgeRouter X converts 12V PoE input into 24V PoE output; I doubt it. It would HAVE to be a configuration option as if it just assumed 24V it could blow up devices. My guess is that because it says PASSTHRU, that it means what it says. It passes through the Voltage to the other side.
Voltage is important. It has to be pretty exact. Amperage is a regulation. Meaning that a device can pull MORE amperage (i.e. more watts in the end) than what the Wall Wart is spec'ed for. This results in the Wall Wart over heating and eventually dying. Either way, one sure fire way to be certain is to use a Multi-Meter on the wires which transmit the power.
Another thing to consider is whether the power is Phantom Power. If it is NOT then the PoE circuit can only handle 100Mbit's of data transmission as it needs the other wires to transmit the power. If it does use Phantom Power then it can send data AND power over the same twisted pairs.
In the end I am amazed this device is only $49.99 and wonder what the reboot rate is. I have a medium-quality WiFi Router and it needs rebooting at least twice a month. Something I do not enjoy.
      Great video!

I'm just guessing here but I could imagine, that the router and the AP can be powered with the 6W adapter because they were both idle. I think once the router is under high load, the 6W might not be enough anymore and the AP might turn off or maybe the voltage might collapse and both devices will turn off and then boot again.

I'll tell where this router would be perfect. Used with sideline replay video system. It is small, uses little power (can plug to battery pack with AC plug), take care of two ethernet operated rtsp cameras, use the passthrough for a Nanostation M5 access point, and receive the end zone cam video to sideline server via Nanobeams. Everything is small enough to pack in two small cases all self contained and powered with battery packs.
One server with as many clients needed to view each play instantly. Having air view is a huge advantage especially when there are numerous services operating in playoff games.
Configuring this stuff is where CrossTalk has been really valuable. If you have anything on local mode rtsp configuration that would be awesome. I'm using Cerevo liveshell 2.

Great info Chris, I have just purchased the three unit wireless kit and I think I will get the Edge Router to use in a very simple way. My setup will be Internet into 24vPOE adaptor....e/0. I will use the e/04 port for my first wireless access point and then use the wireless bridge for the next two access points due to an inability to run network cables to each access point. It would help if you did a video on this.

My guess is that when you wirelessly bridge additional access points, it will force all access points to run at 1/2 duplex. Not much of a choice if you can't run cable to each AP though. I could be wrong, others could chime in...

Hehe, just picked one up at the thrift store, brand new in box, for $6. Not being familiar with Ubiquiti equipment (I'm an Omada person) I THOUGHT it was just a POE powered switch (which I could use). I guess I couldn't read since it CLEARLY states ROUTER on the box! :) So given it's a router I guess I COULD configure it the way I need it (I use VLANs so I need some ports tagged and others not), but more likely I'll just go and sell it.

Exactly this. At the beginning I felt it was powering the AP correctly but couldn't figure out why the AP was restarting and dropping connections. Used the poe injector that came with the AP and all the problems went away. I feel pass-thru means you'd require poe on eth0 of the ERX, with enough to power the ERX plus enough for the AP (or other device).
Anyone banging their head with a constantly restarting AP and using poe - this is generally the issue.

Just want to advise you that it states on the power adapter what it is out putting. You are right about the w=v*a. However it applies to what your source power is. I.E. Wall power in the U.S. is supplied at 110-120v, that power plug adapts down from 120v.

Nope, it has nothing to do with the mains supply voltage. The output rating is purely based on output voltage and current - i.e. 12VDC out at 0.5A is 6W, whether supplied from 110VAC or 230VAC.

They are nice little purpose built routers. I use them in applications that replace netgear and dlink routers in small business that have internet speeds larger than the old devices can support > 20Mb. Have even replaced a few older Sonicwall and netgear VPN boxes. Can't beat the price. Throughput on these things is full Gb unless you are using the PoE so they will support 150Mb internet when using the wall adapter. Just tested against a local speedtest mini and got 360/90 behind two switches and a pfsense router - i'm guessing the pfsense box is limiting a bit.

Hi Chris, could you please do a video on setting up static gateway routes. The scenario I have is this:
    Router 1 (Netgear Nighthawk)[10.0.0.0 subnet] > Netgear AC1200 Extender > eth0 WAN EdgeRouter-X with primarily 172.16.x.x. subnets.
While I was able to get this working with masquerading to eth0, I found that I couldn't connect to services such as a bonjour printer (MDNS) in the 10.0.0.0 segment.
For the time being, I've move my ER-X into this configuration:
    ER-X (eth3) > (lan port) on Nighthawk [disable DHCP] > .....
The ER-X is now running the DHCP server and all devices are within the same subnet. I was advised to remove the NAT masquerading and setup static gateway routes on the both the Router 1 side and on the ER-X.
    Thanks again!

I really enjoy your videos, and your straight forward take on reviewing and quickly unboxing the devices that you take on.
However; the first usable piece of information comes only like 5+ minutes in to the video. If one is here to look at your review of (yet another ;) ) ubiquiti device, we all know what the WAN and LAN is, and that we should update the firmware, and all of these very basic things that you run through every time.
I might be wrong, but it kind of feels like after watching 4-5 of your videos, i have spent 1/3 of my time looking at you updating firmware and plugging in the devices without really adding anything new to the process. If you are buying an edgerouter, and need to learn how to update the firmware or what your particular subnets are on your home network or how to change the admin password, then I think they are in the wrong place to begin with.
Please don't take this as negative criticism, I enjoy the videos you do, because you get to the info that I am looking for pretty quickly, I'm just pointing out that your target audience probably know these very basic things already, and you spend a fair amount of time going through them again and again over and over. Maybe you could fast track them a bit and get to the interesting parts a little faster?
Sorry for complaining, I just thought you could get some constructive criticism how to make your videos more to the point a tad quicker.
p.s. Will we ever get to see you play one of them guitars?

      @CrosstalkSolutions  8 лет назад +1

+Joakim Malmqvist (Jo) Totally understood - but keep in mind two things. First, the vast majority of people watching this video will likely only watch one video of mine - they bought something that they need help setting up, and they want to see it start to finish. Definitely seems repetitive when you watch a ton of my vids in a row, but most folks don't do that. Second, not everyone is super experienced in networking - heck, even I refer back to my own videos from time to time when I forget how to do something...so for the layman, this info is really valuable.
I appreciate the comments, and I am actually planning on getting into some more technical stuff on my channel as time permits, but all of the unboxing and initial setup type of videos will likely follow the same formula.
As for the guitars, you'll have to check out my guitar channel! (j/k - I don't have a guitar channel).

Very interesting. So which would be better, power my unifi AP using the Edgerouter X with the included power adapter and run it through the poe passthrough on the router? Or power the router using POE and power the AP via poe passthrough OR power them independently? Would their be any differences in performance?

Great videos, very informative. Will running one of the wizard setups be enough to get a basic home user going or will I need to do more tinkering to get it going and safe. I plan on upgrading my router (currently Wireless N) and am currently using UAP for my wireless and will be getting an AC Lite when they come out, so I will not need a consumer wireless router if this one will fit the bill. Thanks for the great videos on the Ubiquiti products.

Very informative video Chris. I've setup my 4 Ubiquiti AC-lite access points and they are coupled to an AWS micro instance cloud controller, all seems to work great! Love the fact that you can see the clients roaming from access point to access point seamlessly. The MERU Wireless system in work does this, but costs many times as much (albeit with a greater number of clients per access points and range). I'm looking at getting the edgerouter X and maybe a couple of POE tough switches to complement the setup ( and the replace the spiders web of 15 year old netgear / linksys switches I have dotted around the house) If I add these can they be managed through the Cloud controller as a single pane of glass view ?

    • @CrosstalkSolutions
      @CrosstalkSolutions  8 лет назад +1

+Norton Ansell No - in order to manage everything with UniFi, you need UniFi devices (the USG for firewall, and USW for switches).

+Crosstalk Solutions Right, good to know. I've ordered the edge router x to see what its like. My cable router seems to be having an issue at the moment where it slows down from 50mb to 3mb, ping times of 500ms +. Only seems to have started happening since I put the unifi access points in. But that might be a coincidence ? Turned off the uplink monitoring on the controller as suggested in the forums. is this something anyone has experienced before ?

Thanks for this. I was able to get the Edge working with computer and cameras based on your instructions, however I have no internet access. This is likely because I am setting it up in a cascade with the Edge as router #2. What settings do I need to change due to using a cable from router #1 plugged into the WAN port of the Edge for internet access? The networks are properly isolated with different third digits.

I was wondering if it's possible to power the ER-X from a device "inside" the network, such as a US-8 60W? I know that the ER-X can take the WAN input from eth4, rather than eth0, but that's quite enough to tell me if I can connect eth0 on the ER-X to one of the powered ports on a US-8 60W and have it all work nicely (one power supply for both devices).

Hey Chris, I've been watching a bunch of your videos and they deserve way more views, excellent content and very engaging! I have a quick question though. I have a Cisco Small Business WRVS4400n that just died on me that I need to replace and I plan to do so with a separated router/AP solution for future upgradeability and performance. I also have a 42U server rack in the basement that I use for hosting, all on the same ISP/IP address, so I have a decent amount of throughput that's required from time to time.
What is the difference between the EdgeRouter X and the EdgeRouter ERPOE-5 as far as performance and features? Is the ERX capable of full routing duties? Doesn't it run the same software? The POE is not super important to me, although I plan to also get the Unifi AP AC LR that's a new release as you discussed in one of your other videos, but I understand it works fine on 24v Passive. I know the ER-X isn't a 1 million pps router and doesn't support hardware offload, whereas the ERPOE-5 boasts both of these features. How big of a difference is there in performance do you think? I don't mind spending the extra money. Thanks!

    • @CrosstalkSolutions
      @CrosstalkSolutions  9 лет назад +1

+CyberdyneProductions The EdgeRouter X is definitely lighter on performance - it is more for home use in my opinion. For instance, it doesn't have the built in packet acceleration that gets the ER-LITE and ER-POE to the million packet per second performance that they boast (I forget exactly what that feature is called). I don't have specifics on performance differences - the data sheets should show you the CPU that is used in each device.
The ER-POE on the other hand is great for business and has full routing capabilities. I have been very happy with it each time I have installed it for a customer, and I highly recommend it if you are going to be using it in conjunction with the Ubiquiti AP's.
Bottom line - if you can afford the extra cost of the ER-POE, I believe it is well worth the investment. I only wish Ubiquiti was paying me to sell their routers. :)

Hey Chris, I have a question.
I am struggling to find info on this.
What do I need to set up on my normal router so that all Internet and traffic of the whole network only uses the EdgerouterX?
Do I switch off WIFI and DHCP if i am using the Edgerouter and have a UAP for wifi?
And what ranges should the adsl router be and what should the Edgerouter be? THe range i'll be using is 192.168.0.1
    Hope you can help. Thanks

    • @ShobogenzoX

+Wes Jacobs He changed the DNS so they they are using something other than what's provided by his ISP. The address 4.2.2.2 is a free for public-use DNS provided by L3 and the 8.8.8.8 is the same operated by Google. I've been using OpenDNS' servers for a while, go down to the benefit matrix and you can see some of the benefits of using something other than your ISP DNS servers: www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/

Great job on the video. Looks like in the network setup you can specify a unifi controller and manage multiple devices at once from that controller.
I'm looking for QOS as well as being able to see every connected device on the network and how much traffic it is currently using.
Does the interface show you all ethernet connected devices with activity similar to how a UAP shows you connected wireless clients? I saw a screenshot that might have looked like it would do that.
But, I wonder if Eth2 is actually connected to a switch that serves multiple clients. Would I only see activity on ETH2 for the switch connected to it, or would it identify each mac or IP of the clients connected to the switch?
