Barbara is a clear example of the all devouring mother. Her overbearing protection of her daughter ended up creating a socially maladapted monster. The hardest part of being a mother is to be willing to progressively give up their child to the world, knowing full well that the world is a dangerous place and may well destroy them. If a mother fails to do so, she will selfishly ruin her child, rendering them completely unable to cope with the world.

I had a mother that was only concerned when she realized that her children were gaining a backbone. She never cared about anything we were doing as long as we were in the house while we were doing it. I ran from her house not long after graduating from high school. It was maddening for her that she wasn't able to control me or ask me what I was doing or where I was going. I think that Janelle felt entitled to people's affection, especially Billy's, because her parents always gave her their entire attention and love even though it was a dysfunctional toxic situation. When I heard that she had a crush on "Chris" that probably wasn't reciprocated, a little red flag popped up. Even in her thirties, she still thought of him and had the gall to pretend he was someone who loved her so much that he would tell her boyfriend and parents that Janelle had to be protected at any cost. Can you imagine the effect this had on his life? He is now a police officer, probably married, and a woman from high school is claiming
that he is a CIA agent wanting
Janelle to be protected at any cost.
I really think that besides getting revenge on Billy for not leaving BIllie Jean and the poor baby Tyler to adore her that she also wanted to get out from under the thumb of her parents and be with her boyfriend. Maybe that figured into it somehow also.

I remember when this story first began making the true crime rounds and documentaries. As a criminal psychologist I found it amazingly fascinating but NOT surprising in the least. She was SO "underrated", as many with health or mental issues compounded by a protection wall from a young age are. She was meticulously intelligent, with both a strategic and complex set of mental tools. The level of complexity it took to come up with AND execute this manipulative plot is a gobsmack to many. But so many people do not realize that the the words "Learning disability" has LITTLE to do with "Intelligence". They tend to equate that phrase with "Slow" or "Mental retardation" of some kind, when all it actually means is that they do not well and have difficulty in the "Usual" or "Typical" learning environments society thinks of and that most of us thrive in or handle well. "Learning disability" does NOT mean a lack of, or "less than usual" or even "stunted" in most cases where actual intelligence and complex thought are concerned. Add to that some level of sociopathy and you've got SERIOUS trouble. MAINLY because of what I've said above, no one knows just how intelligent you really are and you learn to play off that misconception very early and use it to whatever advantages you'd like as time goes by. The fact she could think of this and pull this off and the consequences and harm done, is no surprise to those in most of the mental health fields. "Slow" is a whole different ball game, and THOSE people are actually FAR less capable or prone to committing such acts than "Normal" or "highly intelligent" people. Janelle's "Learning disability" had ZERO to do with her intelligence, which to be honest, was probably more complex and strategic than most reading this thread.

Her parents were insane. She was a beautiful girl who could have had the world on a string. The worst kind of monster is a parent who abuses their child and keeps them under their thumb for life.

Reminds me so much of by proxy, Fictitious Disorder. I've observed something similar on a much smaller, less serious tier, within my own family.

Love your channel and so happy for this appearing this morning had a accident yesterday so am stuck on the sofa binging on true crime. Your voice is so calm and comforting making horrible crimes more palatable.

"She told me her name was Billie Jean, as she caused a scene
Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one
Who will dance on the floor in the round
People always told me be careful of what you do
And don't go around breaking young girls' hearts
And mother always told me be careful of who you love
And be careful of what you do 'cause the lie becomes the truth"

I love the rock incident. As if people who commit a crime leave their identities at the scene. This whole family was a bunch of crayon eaters. 😂
