    Anyone complaining about $120 for this knife either doesn't collect knives or hasn't compared these to Benchmade, Spyderco and some others who are using Grivory scales and FRN scales that are priced even higher. From my experience, the build quality of the Todd Begg Knives from Reate & Steelcraft is equal to or even superior to these other brands and worth the money.

    Love both Begg knives and bought both and don’t regret it. The build quality is incredible. LTK did a HRC test and was like 6.1 or 6.2 can’t remember but he was surprised how high it came in.

      Yuup; was two different Bodega's I believe that came in at 62.1 RC. LTK even had a video from Bladeshow where he talks to the guy that owns Begg Knives (not Todd, it's his brother who now owns the company), and he mentioned the great HRC results he got from the D2 being used, and the guys response was awesome; said something like the OEM that they use is like the only company that was willing to shoot for higher hardness so they went with them. But he also was adamant on keeping the OEM a secret as well.

      Too many people are caught up in labels. How many POORLY heat treated M390 knives have hit the market that get a pass because it’s “M390”? The D2 they are using is being independently tested to around 62HRC which makes it far better than other steels you could put in this price range. Not all D2 is the same. As long as the steel isn’t a 440 variant or an 8cr I’m happy with it.

    Budget knife guy here. I’ll willingly “overpay” for a D2/G10 from Eikonic just so I can have a legit Chavez design. This is way more knife than that one. Fair enough. In the same vein, I’ll willingly “overpay” for small batch designers like Divo, Tempest, Orion, Qvist, etc. (Just add another knife to my wishlist. Thanks, MC)

  • @ChrisGraham8
    @ChrisGraham8 Год назад +2

    Couple thoughts. Sub $100 knives are rarely this large or feature this level of milling and fit and finish. Other D2 Chinese knives aren’t testing at 62HRC which makes D2 a MUCH better steel than the others you’ve mentioned. So we’re really talking about $20 here?? You can’t tell me the fit/finish, premium treatment of D2 and the intricate milling details aren’t worth the extra $20? Not to mention the size of this blade? I think the price is very fair and I’m personally waiting for better colors OR a CF variant.

    • @markp4401
      @markp4401 Год назад +1

      I wonder if D2 is being hated on so much these days just because people like 154 CM and 14C28N better. D2 certainly has reasonable edge retention and toughness. It corrodes but so do a lot of the premium tool steels. I’ve heard that D2 can be hard to heat treat properly and consistently in large batches. Overall though I think D2 is being dogged a little too much.

    • @jkstdstang
      @jkstdstang Год назад

      Properly heat treated D2 is actually on par with S30V. I think people don’t like D2 in general due to the overexposure of cheap and poorly heat treated knives in that steel, that D2 is not technically stainless although it has almost enough chromium to be, and that its been around a long time. Its not my favorite steel either and i do agree id prefer sandvik steel or 154cm but D2 is serviceable. Someone mentioned the G10 cheapening the look where the original Bodega and even the Steelcrafts produced by Reate used different finishes to make the scale pop between the lines but there were also Bodegas with monotone G10 scales just like this one, I wanna say maybe the field grades before the steelcraft line came out. For me its the heavy stainless framelock choice I don’t love but I do appreciate its bolted on like the customs. The steelcrafts were pretty nice and didn’t even have that feature. The Design is iconic and a grail to some. I just missed out on a nice condition Reate made steelcraft bodega for 2 bills this evening bc i was typing too slow and another buyer snagged it out from under me. Thats what brought me here and Im trying to resist buying this budget version now lol.

    What’s cheap about the knife is that you will see a line in the G10 that on the original knife represents two different materials being used. On this knife it’s just G10. Everything should not be dumbed down. I think the original knife is a Grail in terms of what Todd Begg achieved as a knife maker. The Bodega is an iconic knife design. The details of the knife are lost in this basic version. I wish Todd had designed a different basic knife. What makes something special gets lost when you try to dumb it down

    If this is seriously THE BEST G10 and D2 knife you've ever seen then sure it might be a bit over priced but so over priced that it needs to be the ENTIRE theme of your review?
    I'll argue no, and here's why.
    Just take 15-20 buck right off the top and call that the premium of buying a "Grail" model authorized by a marquee manufacturer. Okay so that's like $100 to $105 still over priced right? Also consider that it has a rather complex design which takes alot more tooling and workmanship, so there's another $10 to 15 bucks. So $85 to 95 still over priced? Maybe not, but also consider that your saying this is the finest d2 and g10 knife you have ever seen and there's there you have another 10 bucks of value. Bringing it to around $75-85 bucks. Still over priced? I'd say no, my two most recent knife purchases are a Kershaw Iridium in D2 at $64 and a Kizer Chili Pepper in 154cm at $75 both of which are great designs but neither have perfect fit and finish so I'd say this falls straight into the category of competitively priced for exactly what it is but cleary not cheap!

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  Год назад +2

      So just imagine it being less expensive and then it's not overpriced? Not sure I get your point. I think you're focusing on the price and ignoring the parts of my review where I praised the design and quality.

    • @TacticalBunnyCA
      @TacticalBunnyCA Год назад

      @@metal_complex Ironically it's not my aesthetic taste at all (too noisey) and I don't care for heavier knives with shorter blades but you really got me thinking on this one. I wish I expressed it better but with respect, which I real do mean respect because after doing just a couple of mediocre knife reviews of my own I realize it's fracking difficult and your knocking them out all the time, I think you were focusing on the price and not ignoring but certainly glossing over the parts where you praised the design and quality but kept coming back to what it cost. My points are based entirely on taking you for and going off of your word that it is the "best d2 and g10 knife you've ever seen". I very much so believe you but just think you might be under valueing what it takes to get a knife to that quality point especially considering the design intricacy and collaboration cost. This video realy struck me how many $75 to $150 knives I've had that are good but are lacking in refinements and banking on the blade steel and slick bearings to sell what is otherwise a very simple design that is easily slapped together. Isn't that why the AL Mar knives are so expensive and the Kershaw-Emerson colabs were so cheap? Or why a cold steel recon can have s35vn and still only cost about the same as this little guy here?
      I'm just thinking that at the end if the day some thing has got to give for that price.

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  Год назад +2

      @@TacticalBunnyCA your analysis is missing a crucial element: Country of origin. This is the main issue when it comes to my hesitations. I know where it's made and likely what it costs to be made. Sometimes the materials really will have a massive impact on price and sometimes not so much. Sometimes the machining elements are more heavily involved in the price. These things aren't all the same for every country when it comes to cost.
      At the end of the day, I stand by this review. Too expensive for me. Cool knife though

    Watched whole video expecting the price to be 200 based on the lead up...120 is low...you used to say to not base cost analysis solely on the materials...why are you doing that now? With this knife the buyer is paying for the Bodega...years of that original design earning its historical place in the knife community...there's a cost to that...plus how nicely you described its construction, attention to detail and action...is there another 120 dollar knife that accomplishes this much? Doubtful. So the only complaint must derive from the materials used...and thats wrong...besides when specifically did g10 and d2 become associated with "cheap" ...those are quality materials.
