@Brian Babin It's made for media playback and web browsing, which it does well enough.

@@waterheart95 Exactly. My family has a cabin without access to the internet, and I have a Raspberry Pi 3 running Kodi with some emulation and locally stored media for the family to use. I've been itching to upgrade it, so I picked up a Lenovo m92p that I've been tinkering around with, but I'm not sure if that's the machine that I want to go with or if I should go for something like the Larkbox/NucBox. A huge amount of it is going to come down to noise and reliability. I needs to be able to run reliably and fairly quietly without me getting calls from my family about how it won't work or it's so loud that it overpowers the sound of the video that they're watching.
Something like this seems perfect for my use case based on specs, but I've seen comments about the Larkbox being loud, and elsewhere in this thread people complaining about their units dying. Both are pretty big red flags for me.

    GREAT review as ALWAYS!
I watched your earlier video of the pre-production unit. Since you mentioned reporting your heat and other issues to the maker, I expected they would address the issues before mass production. I ordered the 512GB SSD model on Christmas eve. It is due to arrive tomorrow. I already have several mini PCs and more SBCs than I can count so I really didn't have a "need" for another mini PC. The partial metal build of the case gives it a more premium look than the Lark Box Pro. After watching this, I think I made the right choice. I plan on setting it up mostly for retro game emulation and connecting to my TV.
The good thing about ordering something like this via Amazon Prime is if you get a DOA or lemon unit, you can send it back for replacement or refund right away. I'll put it through it's paces as soon as I get it. If it performs like it should I'll keep it. If not I'll return it ASAP.
I do have tempered expectations and know what to expect from a mini PC box with these specs. If it can emulate the few PSP games I have, it should do fine with anything less demanding. If you have time I'd like to see PPSSPP running God of War - Chains of Olympus on this mini PC.
That isn't a game I own but If it can run that game smoothly, it should run the few PSP games I own flawlessly.

If I hooked up wired ones, it ran much better. Through some research, I found that if you use a USB extension cable, and plug the USB receiver into it, the issue is resolved. It also improved the Cinebench Multi Core score by 200 points (ran several times both with and without the extension). Once I fixed that issue, the system seems to run just fine.

I wonder if this is any more stable than the lark box (pro). Just visit the chuwi forums to see all the posts from people with bricked or dead units. some suggested up to 50% died. I went through 2 of them, both returned due to problems (dead USB port on one and the other bricked through changing the boot order in the bios). The problems mostly lay with the UEFI / bios setup as it has a generic debug bios on it and most of the settings are not for the actual device. If you touch a perfectly normal setting in it there is a good chance the device is permanently bricked and no way to clear the NVRAM and reset it. Curious if GMK actually wrote and added a proper finished bios to this unit or if it is just the same rebadged boards as the lark box.

The $20 for 2 extra GB of RAM is definitely worth it depending on your use case. You'll see the real difference the 2GB makes while multi tasking. If for nothing else you have a potential 2GB zram (or ramdisk) block device. You can use it a few ways like letting the board swap and write logs to RAM instead of the SD. For instance create that block device in /tmp and see if it doesn't make a noticeable difference.

It's been this way for decades. You either need a PC today or you don't, as there will always be something better and/or cheaper tomorrow. There will never be a "golden egg" in this market.
2020 was not a great year for PC's as demand was high and thus prices did not fall as much. Used PC prices even went up, not down. 2021 may be better for buyers *if* demand slows but the economy remains strong; an uncertain proposition. If you can wait, then do. If not, then make your selection today using objective reviews from sources like ETA Prime.
Remember with these mini-PC's that you are paying a premium for their form factor. Though less attractive in 2020, you can usually buy a more powerful used PC for the price of a new mini-PC, so your choice can depend upon your definition of "need". Larger form factors are generally more future-proof as well and thus a better investment, but this is becoming less of a factor as the traditional, expandable PC slowly, but surely, dies.

@@Ender3Me I recently picked up a Lenovo Thinkcentre m92p on Craigslist for $100 to tinker with. It came with Windows 10 pre-installed, and seemed to work fine at that. Mostly I wanted to play around with some emulation and see about getting something like Batocera/Kodi running. I ran into a slew of issues as I was working on it, though a fair amount of that was almost certainly that I've never worked with Linux before.
But I did just get it up and running, and it seems to do ok. Ideally I would like an emulation machine that can run Gamecube games flawlessly, but I feel like that might be just beyond the grasp of this machine, though from the Larkbox Pro review it might not be out of the question for that one. The biggest issue for me is noise and reliability. The hope is that this will be used in a remote cabin shared with my family that doesn't have access to the internet, so it needs to play videos/games without dying and without making so much noise that it annoys the family. I've seen some comments about the Larkbox that give me pause though.

Would be cool to get one of these nuc boxes with a '4750e' with a TDP of 5-10w instead of 15w, or just a standard 4750u with custom BIOS that allows for the full 20w burst speed but keeps temps under 80c

my Larkbox just died yesterday, when runing windows in idle mode, just "puf" and everything gone, i dont have any overhyped opinion about repair/refund care from chuwi outside china, so i will probably just discard my 140usd and move out, but this is my second chuwi device, which just died after month, and like 5th or 6th from china overall, so, even these devices are cheap, I DO NOT RECOMEND BUY IT anymore, never ever, just pay more for your local seller, but make sure of FULL repair aviability in your local area, its more important then you think :/

@@Brockton its shame, bcz i really love my larkbox, it was perfect for my needs and cheap too, it is really small, literally palm size, so now when it died, i spend like a week of searching replacement, and i ended with lattepanda delta, its little bigger, with only 4Gb ram and 64Gb erom, but have two ssd nvme slots, and it can have reall passive cooler, so its 100% silent with full load, which is extreme problem with ALL mini mini pc. Second on my mind was hackboard2, but these will be ready on april, and bcz of usa made, shipping and import fee kills it for me completely :(

"Hi this is ETA Prime and this week we're going to look at Cray's new Quantum Supercomputer Development Ball for 2022. Yes this $66 device is the size of a ping pong ball. It has three USB-C ports, built in Wifi, wireless video and bluetooth. I tell you emulation on this thing is fantastic with no issues with emulating the PS5 on the PPPPPSSSSS emulator running at full scaling. Goldeneye for the N64 still has some frame skipping but is almost playable. It can simultaneously run Windows, linux and IOS. Now granted, running Firefox with four tabs open is a challenge and can lead to overheating but the device can be dropped in a glass with ice and a transfer medium of your choice. It tries but alas still can't run Crysis."

The larkbox Pro works fine on a PC LCD, also works fine if I directly connect it to my 4K TV (Hisense 55H9F). However, running it through my receiver (Sony STR-DH590) it will not passthrough. I’ve tried new HDMI HDCP 2.3 cables and others. I’ve set the receivers FMT settings back and forth. Nothing. So it’s an incompatibility with chuwi/sony.
I can plug in an old crappy laptop and the passthrough works just fine. So for CHUWI, I will have to return as it’s not going to work as my HTPC.

Interesting market. I could see these being a nice frontend type box for Plex or Kodi in a different room than the media server itself (i.e. in a living room connected to an older non-Smart TV), or as others have mentioned maybe a good emulation machine? Have you tested emulation on this NUCBox yet? I'd bet it'd run well for all but N64, since as we know, N64 is a beast to emulate, almost no matter the hardware.
