Such a beautiful aircraft. The sound gives me goosebumps..
She was something to see in person while at full power, especially when they ran her with the 3 blade Orion propeller.
Fun days. I'm missing the races already. Roswell doesn't cut it. Thank you for the great times John and Lyle and the awesome Rare Bear crew.

Saw this go 501 mph at a Northrop Grumman anniversary air show.
I knew some of the Rare Bear sponsors ,crew. Harris Flying Service. Pete and Nona were dear friends. I was born in Brownfield.
Really missing Reno already, the days of the Bear, Strega, Dreadnaught, White Lighting , Dago were legendary. Rosewell? WTF are they thinking ?
we were there , i forgot the bear had its flaps wired shut , right to save weight?
She was built up years ago with the flaps blended into the wing. So no gaps to reduce drag
@@Voodoo1650 And an oversized prop that requires 3-point landings to prevent contact with the runway. Such a beast!
@@AirDOGGeiirc, they clipped 8-10 inches off THOSE prop blades to get enough clearance to not pick up f.o.d...

How fast can you go in a constant left turn?
@@lanesaarloos281 The record heat race from 2003 had the P-51D Mustang Dago Red run pretty much every lap of the 8 lap race over 500 mph. The average speed was 507 mph

Takes some doing to go faster than that. Rare Bear pushed the Merlins to bursting point.
