Amazing that this video you made in 2016 is still relevant in 2022 today as I just bought this exact Thunderbolt 2 make from OWC. What's shocking to me is how awful the US Dollar in 2022 has become as the Sticker Price you showed in 2016 was $397 & today in 2022 the same product (no changes in build) is $549 (without RAID Software) and $629 (with RAID Software) in 2022 compared to $397/$475 back in 2016. Mamma Mia! Talk about inflation!! But I still love and need this Enclosure & the OWC company never let me down (Always nice people to me). Thank you for this review, Max 😘👍🏻
I just bought this unit and was thinking of returning it. I read some reviews and forums where people have issues with the software. It seems like the software needs to be updated. I’m on the fence. I would appreciate some feedback.
Hey Max! I just wanted to say thank you for all your great videos, I have been spending tons of time in forums and on youtube trying to figure what will be the best video editing rig to build and order and I have to tell you, your videos have helped me a TON! Ram Specs, SSD over the Fusion Drive, and going with the 4.0Ghz Proc over the medium range for the iMac! I don't comment much on videos but wanted to take the time to tell you thanks for all your hard work!
Thanks, Max! I've actually been looking at those enclosures from OWC for a while now, so it's nice to have your perspective! Looking forward to your next Hackintosh video :)
+Chris Prouse Thanks! This is the first sneak peak into my new build, still finalizing a few things. Hopefully I'll have a video out sooner than later.
+that1cameraguy Yes it would, but the software (SoftRaid) is only for Mac, so you'll want to look into what's available for windows. You can buy the set without the software too.
If you have a medium or large case you might as well just put drives inside your case just find good windows raid 5 software as the built in one is REALLY slow. Like less than 1/5 of Mac
Yeah, I was thinking that. Thanks for the follow up. I may have to eventually go for a case with more hdd caddy space. Windows allows you to create a raid via software through "Storage Spaces" but it's slower than using the RAID option built into the motherboard. I might end up buying a RAID Card.
+that1cameraguy I had a Raid 5 in my previous build (windows) with the same exact drives and it ran under 100MB/s (using storage spaces like you said) Like you saw in the video my 4X 3TB Raid 5 using SoftRaid software runs about 500MB/s. The windows raid 5drivers are just old and suck basically.
I am old school. I rather do manual backups. As for speed, if I am going to pay so much money I rather have M2 with (or just) PCI Express SSDs. Thanks for the video.
Hmm, that seems like a great option for the future. I just ended up getting a WD MyCloud last week just to get our backup process run in the background for now (Also remote access was cool) - But I like the sound of the Thunderbay. Myself and my wife will be dropping our iMacs soon and moving to the Macbook pro's. (Hopefully they release them on the 21st) - What drive would you suggest we get so we can edit from them? Some sort of SSD with a fast connection? USB3 or Thunderbolt. Im thinking of keeping the OS drive clean. New projects go onto the external SSD, When the edit is done, I move to a big backup drive.. Making space for the new project
Thanks for this video. Helps me alot and I can't wait for my Late 2015 Retina iMac to arrive. Gonna couple those things up with this Thunderbay as i do heavy video editing :)
Hello Max, first thanks for the great review. Do you know which HDs are in the box? or at least if they are spinning with 5400 or 7200 ? Thank you very much.
Hi Max! Great Video... I was wondering which drives are you using inside the Thunderbay? I'm thinking of putting WD Red drives but wonder if it's the best combination!
Hey Max, I just bought a late 2015 Retina iMac and can't afford this external drive. Do you recommend a little bit of a cheaper solution? Something around $500. Don't need an insane amount of space but fast writing speeds.Do you still recommend that seagate expansion 5tb? Or something better. I will be editing in 4k
Hello Max, I have just ordered a Thunderbay4 from OWC. Can you advice if I can install 1 SSD as a DAS and then with 3 X 12 tb HDD on RAID, with SoftRaid software.
Hey Max, I am about to buy it on B&H....I want to hear your impressions after some time of using it....is it stable and is it reliable, this is most important to me. Also...do you use some UPS to protect Raid from power loss?
+Bobansky | Director, DP, editor | Bahrain Qatar Saudi Yes very good. I do use a UPS I would suggest it for your PC and Raid setup. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hi , this is very cool. I have couple of questions , i'll be glad if you can share some information : in the video , you said you connect this drive to your hackintosh. Can you share what cpu/mobo/vga you used for your hackintosh. I'd like to setup one, but as you know hackintosh really picky with the hardware. Also i heard of some case that the thunderbolt is not recognized or not working well in hackintosh. So what thunderbolt interface you use ? is it onboard on your mobo or you're using a pci-e thunderbolt card ? I'm planning to be able to playback realtime 4k 16bit dpx sequence (each file is 53MB). Any suggestion ? I used pegasus 1 before, when i still work with 2k, now that pegasus is not enough speed for dong 4k dpx 16bit. There's other solution which is 'caldigit T4' which is faster than pegasus 2, but it's not available in my local store. Thanks.
Hey there. For my hackintosh I just used drives installed in my PC with SATA and then softraid software (without the case) wich is sweet. You can have up a ton of drives internally (up to 8 with good mobo or much more with additional PCI stata cards) and use the softraid to make a raid 5 or other. Search my name and Hackintosh to see my latest build with parts list.
Ok. I have 3 of these and I just downloaded the Blackmagicdesign software to test the speeds. However, the choose disk option is greyed out so I have no idea which drive of my MANY drives is being tested or how to target a particular drive for testing. Any ideas ?
It really is, Storage Spaces is hot trash as raid software. Have you ever used a thunderbay 4 on a windows machine before and if so, what can you suggest I do to get better write speeds (if at all possible?).
Hey. Im interested in buying this enclosure but I'm using PC. I can't seem to wrap my head around the thunderbolt 3 vs USB-C subject. My motherboard is MSI PC MATE B350. Can you share your expert knowledge and tell me, will it work? :) Thanks!
i can help you if you haven't already moved on. this stuff can be confusing because we often mix up "connector types" with the actual technology behind them. example, thunderbolt 3 CONNECTOR and usb C CONNECTOR are identical. you cannot use a thunderbolt device on a USB-C port, and vice versa. Thunderbolt has a massive bandwidth vs USBc. its like comparing a garden hose to a firehose. This is why using thunderbolt on a RAID drive is preferable.so what exactly is the question you have? if your motherboard has a thunderbolt port you can use this product. it cannot be used with a usb c port.
Can you in next video talk about hachintosh, how to set up it, configure. I just want to build hackintosh, but i do not know like which motherboard will be working with OS X and etc
+Tony Nunez I'm not using the thunder bay on my main rig, the hard drives are plugged into the sata ports on my Gigabyte motherboard and I just got the software separately. Works just as well.
+Major Moves Films A7s2's were sent for review. My main wedding cameras are NX1's and I'm looking to buy something higher end for commercial films but haven't decided what yet. One potential is Ursa mini 4.6K.
If you want a good 4k editing experience I'd stay away from laptops, but if you use fcx with the proxy feature yes you could do it just make sure you have some patience. If you edit with Ppro it will be much harder (it's not as efficient). As far as 1080p you don't need too much power to edit it so yes you could.
You were able to create a software raid array ON YOUR HACKINTOSH with the "SoftRaid 5 for Thunderbay" package that came with the enclosure? My experience is that the SoftRaid 5 version that is actually bundled with the the Thunderbay enclosure will not create an array on any device other than the Thunderbay enclosure. I'm having an ordeal with SoftRaid right now over this crippled feature as it is definitely not disclosed. Are you experiencing something different?
imagebuff no the soft raid 5 on my hackintosh I had earlier. I wasn't aware of this as well. I would call them and see if you could just pay the price difference for the upgrade.
+Nathaniel “JustRockFilms” Farinas If you have a PC the software won't work, only if you use OSX. I'd suggest installing your drives inside your PC and using a windows raid 5 solution.
+Max Yuryev thanks for the response. I had one last question. I am thinking of switching my PC to a "hakintosh", are there any benefits of PC vs Mac? I'm on the fence whether I want to switch since I've heard of some issues. Thanks again.
+Francisco sanchez (FX Vision) Hard to show over video. If your in a totally silent room you will hear it, but if listening to music on your mac at 25% volume you will probably not hear it. Same thing if your editing and the fan is at 50% you will probably not hear it as well. I wouldn't worry about the sound, just get a longer thunderbolt cable and place it further away from you.
I find it to be highly dependent on the drives used. The HGST Deskstar NAS and WD Red & Blacks tend to be quite loud whereas the Seagate Barracuda is not nearly so.
Do not buy SoftRAID as you have to paid license fee for each macOS major upgrade. It costs you $79.99. If you do not pay it, you can only stay in the macOS version. You can imagine how much you have to paid at each major macOS upgrade and Apple tends to upgrade macOS every 2 years, then you have to paid every 2 years. The license cost will only increase with inflation.
Lol never mind I just had to restart my computer after putting in the soft raid serial number because soft raid throttles write speeds in the free trial
I'm curious as to why you chose RAID 5 over RAID 10? RAID 5 may provide additional disk space, but you only gain 3x read speed, and 1x write speed. With a RAID 10 you gain 4x read speed, and 2x write speed. I would think the additional speed would be more useful for 4k editing than additional disk space.
Are you sure only 1X write speed? As you see in the video I'm getting 505MB/s write and 576MB/s read. I also don't think Raid10 will give 4X and 2X. I think its 2X and 2X as its essentially doing a two raid 0's (one set as backup). The main reason is space, I want the 15TB. (we shoot a lot of 4K) The speed I'm getting is more than fast enough even for a 6 camera 4K multi-Cam in ProRes 422 and I usually only do up to 4 cam 4K. This year I will be changing to a 12 bay server with raid 6 and 80TB of usable space. Right now we have 30TB of video footage, we can get rid of about 10 of that with cleanups but 20 or so needs to stay and be accessible and of course plan for the future.
I'm certain you achieved 505/MB/s and 576MB/s I'm just saying that you would theoretically go faster using RAID 10. This is because RAID 5 has additional parity operations that come at a cost of write speed. You are mistaken about RAID 10, it isn't two RAID 0s, it is actually two RAID 1s in a RAID 0 config. This way you get 4x read from all 4 disks, and 2x write performance when writing to the two RAID 1s. The only advantage of using RAID 5 at this point is the additional storage space. As you pointed out, you have 15TB in a RAID 5, whereas you would have 10Tb in a RAID 10. Here is a good article explaining the difference between RAID 5 and RAID 10. www.cyberciti.biz/tips/raid5-vs-raid-10-safety-performance.html
The issue with RAID 5 is the additional parity block. You end up striping across 3 disks and storing the parity on the 4th. So you gain 3x read speed from the three disks, but when it comes to writing you gain some from being able to write to 3 disks, but you gain an additional penalty from computing and writing the parity. Whereas, on a RAID 10, the write gain comes from striping across the two RAID 1s and there is no parity cost.
Also, I would recommend against RAID 6. RAID 6 introduces double parity, which will cost you even more write speed. As much as 20% according to this article. www.prepressure.com/library/technology/raid#raid-6
Yes, your right my bad its two raid 1's in raid 0. Raid 5 has worked great for me for years with really fast speeds and I have had to re-built it once. As far as computing penalties it was very low, not really mattering with modern CPU's with real world use. Have a great day and if you buy one of these do me a favor and try both raid 5 and 10 before you throw any data on it (I would if I didn't have data on mine) and let me know the speeds. Its really easy to change the raid format in softraid when there's no data on it.
Max please help me build a hackintosh. Please help i will be utterly grateful to you, as i do not have the money to buy imac .I will edit 1080p as well as 4k video in fcp.please send me the configuration.if possible include the bluetooth also.
Depends on the interface. An SSD on SATA III will see a max of 550MB/s transfer speed. The OWC Thunderbay 4 in the 20Tb configuration pushes 580MB/s ... so it is actually faster than the average SSD! An M.2 SSD or PCIe SSD would be much faster however.
yeah but the tradeoff is you have more protection against drive failure and you can have way more capacity. It's not feasible to build a raid array with many terabytes unless you have over 10k to spend. And if you want performance that smokes an external ssd you can put 8 drives in raid instead of 4. With 8 you can get over 1 gig per second transfer speed.

These are still around 5 year later. Great in-depth review Max. Thank you. Ate they still the best option in their price range in 2021?
Would you still recommend the OWC Thunderbay today? It seems like a simpler solution than a NAS, and efficient.
I'm also wondering about this
Thanks, Max. You've added to my learning all about RAID. And you're not kidding when you call that Dell monitor a beast! holy moly :o

+AnythingSTRANGE I think it's an IKEA desk.
Max?
+fz07er Yup Ikea top with separate legs.

So mine is only getting a 120 MB/s write speed max, the read speed is fine though at around 550 MB/s. Has anyone else had this problem?
Lol never mind I just had to restart my computer after putting in the soft raid serial number because soft raid throttles write speeds in the free trial
What an asshole software.
I have same problem. Try to reboot and still have problems
Check out my hackitosh video, I have a parts list there with wifi card and BT. Guides are available at tonymac86.com
LOL Max was so different before trying coke
Show off that hackintosh
you wont tested the noise level. why?
Not faster than ssd tho
toyarj37 I agree
Not comparable.
