- Our shipment finally arrived! We've got our new algae-eating fish, and boy, are they gonna be HUGE! These White Amur (grass carp) will hopefully be able to handle the algae growth in the summer.
Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

Lydia the fish whisperer, I firmly believe that Lydia would make a really fabulous vet, seeing her care for the wet baby turkey chicks the other day was amazing, her wisdom and the way she warmed them and bought them back to life was amazing, she has that magical touch with animals....
Yeah she's always great with all the animals, always seems to have insights into their behaviors. For a couple years now I've been thinking she'd make a great vet.

Awww, at 4:29 when Willow headbutted Stella, and she ran, it sounded like she was saying/calling "moooom", while peaking behind the tree. It was so cute, and pitiful! Then Willow sat there looking "undefeated, and proud" 🤣😂🤣🤣 All the 🐐🐐🐐 are so cute! I love seeing each of their little personalities come out!

If you twist off the blackberry it'll come off the stem and you won't have to break it off. It should regrow too. It has to be soft to come off
When I was in elementary school there was a mulberry tree that I loved out in the play ground. The teachers told us not to eat the berries because they might be poisonous. We didn't know what type of tree it was. Anyways I never listened so when they weren't looking the older kids would hold me and some others up and we would pick as many as we could and then share. It was the best and I didn't know what they were until I watched this so thanks 😊

You know your an amazing goat keeper when they line up to get milk what a great family
I think what you will discover is that the grass carp does not have sucking mouth parts and therefor has no good way to suck alga out of the pond. They are great at controlling underwater weeds like Hydrilla and even Lilly pads and grasses. Basically you have added three aquatic goats to the herd. They like about the same things that the goats like, and when they are big they will each eat about as much as a small goat. There is a fishing youtuber out there who goes by Juanelo1946 who did a great video on grass carp a few years ago. He's kind of sour on them because he overstocked his 6 acre pond with them about 30 years ago, and they have actually caused bad alga blooms for him. Our experience with them has been very good so far, but we stocked half the number of fish in our lake recommended by the hatchery on account of Juanelo's experience. About 40 of our 70 haven't reached full size yet, so the jury is still out on whether we will have similar problems as Juanelo. So far they are keeping the submerged weeds (mainly milfoil and bladderwort) at bay while not wiping them out entirely, which is exactly what we want. They aren't great at controlling floating vegetation like duckweed, although they will try to eat it. The bluegill actually eat the duckweed more efficiently. For a fish to be a good alga eater it needs to have sucking mouth parts like a pleco. The mouth parts of the grass carp are design for clipping off vegetation like a goat or sheep does and not for sucking it up like a pleco.

Just started watching your channel so hope I'm not repeating information you guys already know, but another way to reduce algae is more plants. Algae thrive in excess nutrients and light. Reducing those directly reduces algae. So plants that cast shade or float on the water will both eat up extra nutrients and block the sun. More fish can actually make algae worse as they contribute to the waste production/nutrients in the water (although I don't think just a few of those guys in a big pond makes a huge difference in this case). Most fish also don't eat a ton of free-floating algae that turns water green. They'll just munch on stuff growing on rocks. You might also want to cut back on whatever you feed your tilapia, as you might be feeding too much, which adds to the nutrients in the water and grows algae.

I had two rabbits outside. Rats showed up. I put water w a lil anti freeze in it and put it where only they can get. We worked great. They come for the poop.

You should paint the Turkey chicks nails with nail polish that would probably work better than a string or something
Kimberly Barner Nail polish wears off fairly quickly. I tend to paint nails when I’m going through my flock. The best way to mark any bird is with a dab of dye on the back in between the wings. Blue coat works fairly well as would a quick spray of food coloring (no red though). Those guys though look big enough for a small simple band.

That’s interesting that you picked the White Amur. Some people won’t know that it is a species of grass carp that are sterile. They do eat a ton of vegetation and algae, so they should get the job done. They can grow pretty big. Should be interesting to watch them grow.
