People often times have their natural charisma beaten out of them by abusive families and parents.
I think this is actually a blindspot for Terry... his family of origin sounds pretty healthy and helpful, we aren't all so blessed. Abused people need to do work to heal themselves and their relationships before some of that natural charisma comes back. You're not going to blow anybody away with your wit and confidence when you're in corner, twitching from anxiety and depressed about life.
