Worth noting... win or lose the Contest, Odium is still trapped. So they don't have to win. They just have to either win or lose. But, Vargodium thinks he sees a way out from either condition.
That is the most likely scenario, though I'd hesitate to take it for fact as Brandon has also said that he hasn't fully decided how era 2 intertwines with Stormlight. There's a chance Alloy, or some of Wax's flashbacks, takes place during the events book 5. Or maybe it isn't until much later. Since nothing is official, I'd probably agree that the events of Alloy happens after book 5 - especially after reading the early release of WAT chapters. wob.coppermind.net/events/2/#e232 - Zaq
See... this is why I'm so confused by the end of Rhythm of War. If the Shard doesn't totally take over the Vessel immediately, then why is Vargodium pure evil within seconds of Ascending? Why is he suddenly twirling his moustache and tying women to train tracks? And if the Shard does immediately take over the vessel, or at least, if that's possible, how would Cultivation be so easily fooled? The only explanation which makes sense is that Cultivation knew what would happen and is still tricking Vargodium into thinking she has no idea he's going to kill everyone when that's directly opposed to his stated goal and characterization up until now.
I am under the impression that it takes some time for a vessel to fully gain access to the entirety of a Shard's memory - otherwise it makes no sense why Harmony has no clue who Hoid is in his first letter. Though, maybe the dual shard aspect functions differently. Also, I am not at all convinced that Cultivation isn't pulling all the strings. If her goal is change, regardless of good or bad, then who knows what her plan is. - Zaq
@@Lightcallers I think the memory from the power is, well, the power. You can remember what the power has done before, like if there was a keystroke log on a computer. Like, the power of Preservation has memory, and the power of Ruin has memory, and can tell the current vessel, this is what I've done in the past, this is how I've been used. I don't think that's the same thing as, the power holds every thought and memory from both Leras and Ati, and eventually Sazed will know everything they both knew. But, I could be wrong.

We have WoB that "era 2" takes place in the gap between Arc 1 and Arc 2 of the Archive. So this Letter will slightly predate Era 2.
