My theory is that Blofeld is just messing with Bond when he says "it was all me". Like it WASN'T QUITE all him, but his organization is far-reaching enough that he can PRETEND it was.
Honestly if they wanted to connect to the previous movies, a smarter way to do it would have been "everything you did just made us stronger". It would actually make sense, to have Bond kick over all these rival organisations that then get swallowed up into SPECTRE.
@@zhoufang996 That would actually make a lot of sense. Casino Royal? We obtained plenty of funding and contacts with the fall of Le Chiffre. Quantum? When it went under, the leaders left behind resources and connections obtained discretely as well as a power vacuum. Skyfall? Spoiler It's funny they got the guy who played Moriarty on Sherlock to be it this film where the main character has an evil sibling we never heard about prior
I really struggle to separate the rest of this movie from the terrible core plot, not just the Austin Powers villain but also the confused C subplot with unclear stakes and motivations all around, which seems to only be there so that M and Moneypenny have something to do. And of course there's also the total lack of climax to Bond's story. I think there could have been a good movie in there with a lot of talented actors and production staff, but the lynchpin, the plot, is a wet noodle. I would not rate this one highly!
Watching the train fight, I figured Batista went, "Oh no, a rope! My one weakness! ... Oh no, kegs! My other weakness!" Also picturing him standing back up and walking after the train once he's thrown out the door. Half expected him to show up at the compound at the end, rope still around his neck, with a trail of (empty) kegs behind him. "Do you know how long it takes to walk out here?"
I always though the biggest problem with Spectre was naming the film Spectre. The whole Blofeld reveal would of been sooo much better if nobody saw it coming. Also just having the twist that he was responsible for the events in the previous films was so lame.
See also; the next Predator film would be better if they don't tell anyone the Predator is in it. Just have an action movie going on for 45 minutes before the audience goes BANANAS.

There was a fire in the downtown area where I live some years ago, and the structural damage to nearby buildings was surprising to hear about. Neighboring buildings that had otherwise appeared untouched needed to be torn down all the same. So I was perfectly willing to accept "cheaper to rebuild", since I was assuming the damage from the bomb was more thorough and structural than the immediately visible damage.
The influence that the James Bond movies have cannot be understated. They can do so much for small countries and other such things. Like The Man With the Golden Gun's James Bond Island, or the fact that Spectre created a tradition. I'm sure that the random ex-spy who wanted to write a short, simple little spy story couldn't have imagined the influence it would end up having.
Portugal used On Her Majesty's Secret Service as recent modernisations publicity especially of the "Look at our recent, cool, San Francisco looking bridge!" type is another great example.

Well, alpine sanatoriums for the rich and famous have a long-standing tradition in real life, and do have a certain kind of glamour associated with them, so personally I don't find it too weird.
My headcanon is that during the torture, Bond hallucinated the end of Spectre and all of No Time to Die, and that he will come round in time for the next movie but still unable to remember faces. Specter- rewrite? Given the ability to change this movie, I think there’s definitely a few paths to make the 3rd act feel less/twisty. Starting from Matt’s idea of swapping the reveals(reveal Blofeld is actually Franz), and work backwards. Have bond feel that Blofeld is familiar, but only have him realize who Blofeld was just before the lobotomy to remove his ability to recognize faces. Give Blofeld the scar initially, and reveal he got it when killing his father as part of the unstoppable object metaphor without revealing he also killed Bonds adoptive father. The thing I think could most easily rework the “I am the architect of your pain” is to make the prior villains simply have been manipulated by his organization. Le Chiffre already has an explicit tie to Mr. White- have Blofeld just mention that Le Chiffre failed Spectre, despite their support. Greene was a member of Quantum, and Quantum could’ve been a subsidiary of Spectre that was either unknowing of the larger organization or was their financially focused arm(which also opens the door to other arms focused on government manipulation). Silva could be called a “mad dog”, with Blofeld providing him tidbits that led Silva to fixate on MI6(which could explain why Silva waited as long as he had to enact revenge). And part of the key is to make his reasoning unknown initially- to laugh off the idea of why simply because he could. He’s obsessed with power and sadistic, but also just enjoys toying with things. He enjoys watching bond struggle, see him fail those he cares for, but has been surprised how resilient bond is. As part of the lobotomy scene, have Blofeld say “You thought I was familiar, but couldn’t quite place me. Let me give you a hint- my name was Franz. Now, let’s make sure you never recognize anyone, ever again.” A lot of the rest of the movie could follow the same beats/scenes, with beats to adjust how Franz was revealed earlier. I wrote this kinda scattershot, so hopefully it makes any sense
You made it to the end! Even though "james Bond Will Return"..it's been quite a journey. Well done with an entertaining and informative podcast. I've been watching these more or less concurrently with you guys, and many of them (especially the 90s and 200s/2010s ones) are new to me. I've learned that my favourite thing about the Bond movies is...the beyond the scenes stuff. So many cool stories! Wild spontaneous things happening that work! Crazy stunts! I love it. Matt in particular will hate this -- I convinced my mum to watch From Russia with Love with me when I visited for christmas. She didn't really get into it and asked me "What's the one with halle Berrie in it? I liked that one!"
If I’m correct, that crater the base is inside is the same one where Hamunaptra is, in the 1999 mummy. (I haven’t seen the whole video yet so if this is mentioned later on I apologise)
15:15 In this scene, Bond is actually using a quite cool real life gadget called a laser microphone. A surveillance device that detects vibrations on, for example, glass panes as in this scene.
This podcast series has been a blast and I'd really love to see you do more in its style, maybe a monthly series on your favourite movies or something like that.
Re: Day of the dead parade: So james bond is the modern day charles dickens then? Bringing what he wanted to see out of the holiday into the world by pure willpower alone.
Dickens did recover plenty of pre-Cromwell English Christmas traditions back, but as a whole, Christmas as it is thought out now (Santa aside) is pretty much an invention of "A Christmas Carol". I'd say Spectre went even farther then Dickens and TOTALLY made up a custom.
@@Targisvear well, what i pointed out there is the holiday, not the parade... Since, as far as i know the Día de Muertos or Día de los Muertos is a Mexican Holiday, famous for creation of altars and eating pan de muertos (bread). The city-wide parade in the other hand.. is something that i'm not sure about. Maybe it was an artistic interpretation from the movie of the actual holiday, that also somehow influences the how the holiday being celebrated in that place since 2016.
@@novrdd Just commented because the fact the holiday is real is a bit irrelevant to the point made in this video or the original comment, since we all know it is real, but in the way it is shown in this movie, it isn't (or wasn't until after its release). That it is real and they create altars for it is good trivia, but has nothing to do with anything anyone said here. Nobody said Dia de los Muertos does not exist and I don't think anyone misheard that it does not exist from saying the parade in Mexico City is an invention (maybe you thought people were saying that), so no correction was needed.
I will say this, Thank you all of you for all the hard work all of you have done on this. for 26 week the bleakness of this years when some really dark times came down through my way this show brought me joy and keep me going sometimes when I didn't think anything else would be able to... so thank you all so much you have no idea what this has meant to me and how this has keep me going.
the "laser sight" is probably a laser microphone: a laser that bounces off the window, which is then detected for minor fluctuations caused by the vibrations of the glass. its actual spycraft used during the cold war
2:02:50 - the twitter thread Matt mentions here, it reminds me of hearing an alternate interpretation of the ending to Minority Report. Where Tom Cruise's character (can't remember the name but just saying Tom Cruise, you'll know who I mean) gets put into the dream prison and the guard says "They say your life flashes before your eyes, that all your dreams come true." And what happens? His wife breaks in and saves him from the prison, he beats the bad guy, and they all live happily ever after in a log cabin somewhere. One can make the case much like Matt quotes from that thread that when Bond gets lobotomised in this scene, everything after it is just his conciseness making a happy ending for him as he's actually dying in that chair.
This was the movie that finally sold me on Daniel Craig's James Bond. It's still not my favorite incarnation of the character, but after watching this one I finally went "yeah, Craig can make this character work."
I felt great catharsis when Matt mentioned Star Trek Into Darkness, because he is exactly right and I have mentioned that comparison multiple times when explaining why I didn't like this movie. The plot is just so ridiculously bad.
I've seen bad movies before, but that was the first movie I saw that made me legitimately angry I had paid for it. Having seen all 6 of the Original Star Trek movies as a kid it just felt like the movie was masturbating to itself.
I have really enjoyed this series and would love to see more of it. They're ruining James Bond. Those two complete hack writers, Purvis and Wade, should have been gotten rid of after The World is Not Enough, or at least after Die Another Day. Why they're STILL being hired is seriously beyond me.
@@DM-kv9kj What a bone head.
Oh man, we’re so close now, I can feel it.
Theory: Spectre is just fucking with Bond, because their surveillance is everywhere and Blofeld has a bit of an obsession
My theory is that Blofeld is just messing with Bond when he says "it was all me". Like it WASN'T QUITE all him, but his organization is far-reaching enough that he can PRETEND it was.
@@TheWAYF I'd rather that for Silva's sake. Quantum makes sense, the rest is a bit of a reach
Skyfall? Removed M, put the entirety of MI6's effectiveness in doubt in the public and political stage.
Sadly, none of that saves the bizarre needle torture that doesn't actually work for some reason.
I always kinda wanted a dumb call back with Q and the missing DB10 being like "Oh no, they did another invisible one!"
Thanks for your in depth reviews, they've really brightened up my Mondays. I hope to see you back really soon when we emerge from this dark tunnel.
it's been a pleasure and a joy to listen to these every week
Discovering this podcast has truly been one of the highlights of 2020. It's been a bright light in this year of darkness. So thank you guys so much for an epic 26 episodes. And I wish you guys a very happy new year!
Spoiler
It's funny they got the guy who played Moriarty on Sherlock to be it this film where the main character has an evil sibling we never heard about prior
This podcast has been a real treat, y'all made Monday a day to look forward to in these dire times!
I've enjoyed this series immensely, thank you Graham, Matt, and Matt, (and Heather). Excited for it to return when we get the next movie
@@AnInnocuousBlueCube And when the Care Bears show up in the third act to convince the predators that hugging is better than hunting, there won't be a dry eye in the house.
I think Bond movies suffer when they try too hard to stick to a continuity
@@JoaoPessoa86 only because they don't pre prepare the story arch. If they plan a story arc for a series of films it could work. But with Craig's films they just waited and tried to make it work as each film came out.
This podcast has been an utter delight to follow. As always, I look forward to your future endeavors!
Man, Im gonna miss this so much. A while back I thought to suggest a Star Trek rewatch podcast, going episode by episode. I know it’s a passion of Graham’s and I love hearing him talk about it, but Ive never had the drive to watch it. But you guys aren’t robots. Thanks for what you’ve done!
I figured him for Trekkie but it the "with mint frosting" comment that I knew for sure 🤣
An important reference is that “the five eyes” is a real intelligence group comprised of Canada, the UK, the US, Australia, and New Zealand that basically does this already. The intent is to pool information to allow each other to deal with their respective international intelligence issues in a swifter fashion
#PardonSnowden #PardonAssange
9 eyes was also a thing. seems like the number of eyes changes depending on the circumstances.
The anglophone countries. Mostly British commonwealth.
Or, as Stephen Fry nicknamed it in QI: "Don't tell the French."
So Canada really is evil.
Relevant Trivia: While a nice joke in context of the movie, the head of MI6 and sometimes MI6 itself is actually referred to as C
Oh, like in John LeCarre? Is it short for "Control"?
@@T4G0E It was the surname of one of the first official heads who would just sign his name as "C" and it kinda became common practice then - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansfield_Smith-Cumming
(The Spy who Came in From the Cold used this as it's basis for Control)
It seems it's now officially "Chief" which is kinda disappointing
@@cronoros And "Casino Royale" strongly implies that "M" is derived from M's civilian last name so this is not the first time the franchise has made that reference. In fact, Fleming probably chose the "M" designation in the novels as a referene to "C" in the first place.
@@Taschenschieber Fleming did choose M as an homage to C(according to wikipedia) which would make sense as he would have interacted with MI6 in his role during the war
Are we still planning on No Time To Die?
It was a great run listening to the podcast!
This series has been excellent, guys. Can't begin to tell you how much I've enjoyed it. Thanks so much.
So when is the next episode?, been waiting a while lol
There was a fire in the downtown area where I live some years ago, and the structural damage to nearby buildings was surprising to hear about. Neighboring buildings that had otherwise appeared untouched needed to be torn down all the same. So I was perfectly willing to accept "cheaper to rebuild", since I was assuming the damage from the bomb was more thorough and structural than the immediately visible damage.
Happy to see that other people also find this villain's motives lame. I love this podcast,
The influence that the James Bond movies have cannot be understated.
Thailand has about 70 million people . That is not a small country.
@@Targisvear ...did they get rid of the bridge they used in the movie? :-/
@@blofeld39 Still there, there is one other bridge over the same river by now, but that one is still there, just renamed (it had the name of the dictator then and was renamed to the revolution that overthrew his regime).
@@Targisvear Ah; gotcha. Nuts to think they filmed there just right after Salazar had had his stroke.
If I had a penny for every Alpine Health Clinic in the Bond franchise, I'd have two pennies. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird it happened twice.
Well, alpine sanatoriums for the rich and famous have a long-standing tradition in real life, and do have a certain kind of glamour associated with them, so personally I don't find it too weird.
"Two, is that a big number?"
"Depends, for number of gadgets: no. For number of mountaintop swiss health clinics: yes!"
My headcanon is that during the torture, Bond hallucinated the end of Spectre and all of No Time to Die, and that he will come round in time for the next movie but still unable to remember faces. This will be used to explain a partial/total recasting, why nobody looks the same any more, and why all the dead characters are suddenly back.
"- SHAKING LETTERS - MORE LIKE NO TIME TO RELEASE AMIRITE WRITERS". Matt G. is still my favourite part of these videos lol
When will Matt G. show up in a video?
@@blofeld39 Not sure if you watch Loadingreadyrun's other content, but if you don't, Matt G often turns up on Crossing the Streams. He's just as dryly funny IRL.
@@lirazel6414 I'm glad to hear it. :-D
Is anyone here waiting for the No Time to Die episode?
I love you both, goshh.. I never knew I would enjoy these podcasts so much, just like how i enjoyed the movie. There is a certain kind of pleasure discussing movies with buddies. This was the case here. First time I thought why they didn't make more bond movies. Happy new year guys. You made my 2020 better, considering i lost my grandfather and grandmother this year and lost my uncle to covid.
Thank you so much guys. Stay blessed.😊😊
I think the writers were discussing the brother plot point and one of them exclaimed 'Groovy Baby!'
Thank you guys for everything!
Can't believe it's been 6 months of FRWL. A great way to spend my time at home this year.
im sitting here at 1.20.21 and im fully expecting graham to do the "ITS ME AUSTIN, IT WAS ME ALL ALONG AUSTIN" bit upon the reveal that christoph waltz is supposedly behind all the previous craig films. i mean it'd make about as much sense, especially with dave batista literally in this movie
Aww, son of a bitch!
Good to see our editor has mastered the shaky text
1:44:18 - though not the same year or model, that Rolls is evocative of the one in Goldfinger.
Shaking my head that the end of this movie is basically "It was ME, Barry!" (see: The Flash comics).
Also loved this series; it gave me something to look forward to every week. See you next time!
Thank you for all the work you guys did on this podcast. I so enjoyed it and I will miss having it as a part of my Monday routine.
Nooo! It’s over! I’ve adored these!
If I’m correct, that crater the base is inside is the same one where Hamunaptra is, in the 1999 mummy.
(I haven’t seen the whole video yet so if this is mentioned later on I apologise)

In this scene, Bond is actually using a quite cool real life gadget called a laser microphone. A surveillance device that detects vibrations on, for example, glass panes as in this scene.
Gentlemen, I would just like to say "thank you". This has been an enjoyable journey and I look forward to hearing you both again.

Fun fact: Did you know that Edge of Tomorrow is based on the light novel All You Need is Kill? It also had a manga adaptation first.
This podcast series has been a blast and I'd really love to see you do more in its style, maybe a monthly series on your favourite movies or something like that.
It was me Bond! It was me ALL ALONG! You all bought it! Even my immediate family bought it! Every damn one of you was made fools of!
I'm gonna miss this podcast. Listening to both of you talk about these movies was very fascinating.
They should do bond villains and Bond girls list
Re: Day of the dead parade: So james bond is the modern day charles dickens then? Bringing what he wanted to see out of the holiday into the world by pure willpower alone.
Dickens did recover plenty of pre-Cromwell English Christmas traditions back, but as a whole, Christmas as it is thought out now (Santa aside) is pretty much an invention of "A Christmas Carol". I'd say Spectre went even farther then Dickens and TOTALLY made up a custom.
Día de Muertos or Día de los Muertos (day of the dead) is an actual real holiday in Mexico... do they celebrate it by parading or not im not sure...
@@novrdd Not in Mexico city and not like that. It was never part of the holiday there, until this made them take it up.
Besides the Austin powers brothers storyline I actually really like this film. Sad the series is over ...
Thanks for a great run, guys. This series has filled a huge gap in my trivia knowledge.
Thank you, gentlemen. Great show. Looking forward to the next one...with Love
1967 - Blofeld has a scar; 1969 - Blofeld doesn't have a scar; 2015 - Blofeld has both no scar and a scar
the "laser sight" is probably a laser microphone: a laser that bounces off the window, which is then detected for minor fluctuations caused by the vibrations of the glass. its actual spycraft used during the cold war
Will Graham & Matt be reviewing No Time to Die?
Into Blandness
I've seen bad movies before, but that was the first movie I saw that made me legitimately angry I had paid for it. Having seen all 6 of the Original Star Trek movies as a kid it just felt like the movie was masturbating to itself.
Thanks for all these episodes folks! Love the Bond franchise, so this was a blast to listen to week after week!
This series has provided me with the answers for many questions in the twitch pub quiz I've been doing, A++, would watch again
I have really enjoyed this series and would love to see more of it. I understand the need for a break, but damn do I just want to hear more of Matt and Graham just gushing about the things they care about (and Matt G's snarky edits & comments are also awesome) if you do decide to make more in the future then we would love to watch them.
All the Bond films came out on Crave (here in Canada) back in December and I was really only keen on re-watching the Craig films again. But then I discovered this podcast and I decided to go through all 25 of them. And boy oh boy, did your podcast really enhance this experience. I gotta thank y'all for the work putting in to making these so easily digestible and informative!
any idea on when you do an episode for No Time to Die?
I'm the sort of person that doesn't like podcasts a lot. Yet this the way you guys do it is so much fun and I love you guys so much, having so much fun while you two talk about James Bond. I love this podcast so much that it's made me think a bit about the Bond franchise and I've even recommended the podcast to my dad who loves the Bond films as well.
Thank you guys^^
(Note: While I do think that Spectre is one of my personal best I will admit I didn't like the ending, not as grandiose as Casino Royale or Skyfall, and Blofeld's plot was lost on me a bit, I understood it yet I was just like "eh.....okay")
so u have 3 Craig films in the top 10 bond Movie rankings?, that is interesting, i have never seen that before, even from diehard Craig fans ^^
