    Hello Graeme, from Northern Ireland. Your location and captures are stunning, especially with all that snow. I just purchased the Canon R5 & RF 2/8 24-70mm lens. I only do landscape photography which I love with a passion. With my previous Canon 5D3 I would adjust the barrel of the lens with the affinity marker. I was thinking that I could do what I normally do and autofocus 1/3 up from the bottom, then switch over the lens to manual, then do Focus -Peaking! Would that be a proper and good set - up to get started Graeme? Having said that, I do not know how to focus peak as yet, but it is my mission to achieve this...

    • @GraemeSomerville
      @GraemeSomerville  3 года назад

      Hey Allan, Thanks for taking the time to comment. I don't use the focus peaking feature. If I focus manually, the R5 has green box and arrows so you can see when that part of the image is in focus. I have never had an unfocused image using this technique. I should look into focus peaking at some point.

    Hey Graeme, love your video. Appreciate your "Risk-It-to-get-the-biscuit" in the cold there..lol. Very nice shots! I am in that "Making the transition over to mirrorless" myself, and I have been reading so many reviews on the R5. I am currently a Nikon shooter (D850/500), and I have been going back and forth between the Z7 ii, and this. One of my hold backs, was actually the articulating screen and how that would do in a Portrait mode shot with L bracket. So, THANK YOU for showing that :-). Have you experienced anything that you would consider a "negative" of the R5? Thanks in advance!

    • @GraemeSomerville
      @GraemeSomerville  3 года назад +1

      Hi Rob, Thanks for your comment. In terms of the shooting experience I have nothing but positive reviews. I am coming from the Canon 5d4 and this was my first mirrorless camera. It's fantastic. The only drawback is the 8k video. It doesn't play well on my computer. But I don't shoot much video and the 4k is more than fine. I thought about the R6 for a while and actually had one for a week. I was a little put off by the 20mp (only!!! ..aren't we spoiled) as I often crop my images. So I decided on the r5. I must admit I had to think for a long time if I was going to spend that much on a camera but I am glad that I did. I've never been a Nikon shooter so I am not familiar with the specs Z7 ii. The Rf glass is phenomenal too. Keep in touch. I'd be interested to know what you decide to do. All the best.

      @@GraemeSomerville Will do Graeme! You and i have very similar shooting interests. Your take on many aspects reflects mine too. My wife and i live in the Washington area in Vancouver, so there are so many landscape opportunities here. And i love wildlife as well. So the D850 was my landscape and D500 was my wildlife. Love em both. But i have to admit, Mirrorless is the way to go, especially when you talk about weight and silent shooting 😎😬. Im still leaning towards the R5, as i have sold many of my Nikon lenses already. However, the lenses i do have left are pricey, and changing manufactures is a biggie, lol. So i appreciate your video and will def keep in touch. Take care, stay safe!

    Hi Graeme- I am a Seattle photographer and still using the 5d mk 4, and by chance saw your video. You did an excellent job with the shot at Artist Point, it looks fantastic! I enjoyed your commentary throughout the process. I have been considering switching to the R5, but not being a professional photographer I can't justify paying $3,900 for the R5, plus replacing the 16-35 2.8, the 24-105, and the 100- 400. That is about $10,000. I am very interested to hear more about your experience on using the adapter and the especially the autofocus. I shoot landscapes and wildlife (birds in flight). Are you a professional real estate photographer? Thanks,

    • @GraemeSomerville
      @GraemeSomerville  4 года назад

      Hi Don, Thanks for reaching out. I wish I was a professional. I am a school teacher but do some real estate photography part-time. I am hoping to expand my RE business in the future but even so, it was a real stretch for me to get the r5. I had the 5dmrk4 but found it didn't quite work for me for real estate in those small spaces and tight rooms. I had a good summer in my part-time business so invested in the r5. I looked at the r6 and was also impressed with that. I must admit I had to think really hard before getting it. So expensive!! And then there is the RF glass. Yikes. I'll have to wait on that. The auto-focus is definitely a big jump up from the mark 4. It is so responsive and eye-tracking is amazing. It is very noticeable the difference. I found the 5dm4 hunted quite a lot and I missed maybe 5-6/10 shots when shooting birds. But the r5 is a killer wildlife camera. My success rate is easily 9/10 or higher (and I am a novice bird photographer). I am looking to do more wildlife photography now I have it. The only thing that I can tell that is lacking with not having the RF glass is the IBIS in the camera and lens. It is not as good with EF lenses and adapter. They don't talk to each other as well. But I haven't got any real data on that. Just stuff I have read.

    • @coryandpamela1
      @coryandpamela1 4 года назад +1

      You know you don't have to replace all your glass. I don't plan on buying the RF glass to replace what i have. Until they come out with more lenses i will be sticking to the EF lenses.

    A suggestion. Give us a sentence of what you’re going to to, do it, and then, with gloves on, explain what you’ve done, and why. I’ve got photo gloves with fingertips that are held in place with Velcro. Peel them back, make your adjustments, fold them back, and keep warm. There are lots of different ones on Amazon, for photography and fishing. Pretty much the same concept. Believe me, they work well. Just remember the battery life at that temp can be terrible.
    For landscape particularly, these new cameras allow you to shoot multiple focus zones and will combine them for full depth focus. I forget right now what the feature is called, but it can make a major difference.
