When Lance asked the community what the best thing to improve your trading on Twitter, I literally said recording and reviewing your trades. Been doing it for years and nothing is better. I’m extremely fast myself and it’s thanks to this method. I also preach this to traders all the time but most traders are lazy and won’t do it.
I watch your videos often. I do what this video described all the time. When I see an intriguing video, I watch it and watch it and watch it at different speeds, sometimes higher speed other times slower speed; Often I go back and forth a dozen times to grasp an issue of a concept.
I trade Futures so not sure if there is something like this for stocks but Tradovate has a "Market Replay" feature which is amazing. It includes all tick and volume data. Meaning you get every tick by tick movement and you see the complete order flow (DOM / Time and Sales / Cumulative Delta). All this is available back to 2017 for all futures that traded at that time. This way you can replay key moments in the market and see how they played out in real time.
Thank you a lot! I was just recently thinking about what you said in the video - how to improve my trading. I heard that you can record video, but I didn't know exactly how to do this to capture the essence I needed. Thank you for the detailed instructions on exactly how to record videos and what to do next with them.
But I watched this at 1.5 speed and am still struggling to get reliably profitable. :) Thanks SMB, trading is literally the hardest thing I"ve ever attempted but your advice does help. Thanks
This is great, thanks for posting! I usually just screenshot my entire session with all trades marked up on screen, in color codes - (I trade very LTF crypto - so up to 40 trades per 3 hour session). This idea will help me live-replay each section - love it! Keep 'em coming please...
I recently listened to your Chat With Traders podcast interview and was very impressed. I’m glad to hear you’re with SMB and I appreciate your insight on more effective learning. Thank you!
you nailed it about using the keyboard on replays. replay your red trades over and over again. pause and resume as you read the L2 and tape. re key your entries and exits using dummy keys on a fullscreen replay. its almost the same as being back in the trade when it happened. do it over and over again until you can read the tape and l2 on that trade with trained eyes.
Building blocks. Paying attention to detail. David Lee Roth said Eddie Vanhalen was obsessive with tape. He said that after every single live show the first thing Eddie would do was go back to the hotel room and listen to the tape and pick apart everything he could have done better. If you want to succeed you gotta fo the work. The best musicians, the best golfers, the best traders succeed more often than anybody else because they put in a little more work than anybody else.
What a great video with amazing tips, I did the exercise of recording my screens and then replaying them especially for the tape, it helped me a lot but unfortunately I wasn't consistent enough on this exercise, but I'm now going to do it regularly for sure, this is a request to SMB team, if you could record regular videos with Lance, great inspiration for me, just a request If you could record a video with Lance on topic "Tips to shift psychology from PnL trading to actually the chart trading", this issue is holding me back to my trading success. Thank you!
Lance, your method can be improved 100%: I use OBS to stream my platform live to RUclips (privately). You can do up to 10 hours a day. When I review my trades you can link to the timestamp on the video in my trading journal. So I never have to delete anything, never have to edit anything, and if I want to review the entire days price action I can.
The difference in trading is that there are things happening that we may or may not pay attention to. That is why you need the seasoned traders to show you how to analyze your trades, to see what is important and to point out what technicals you should be paying attention too. It's difficult because it depends on the types of trades you are taking. How the get the best results.
this is brilliant! I started recording my trading sessions last week after running into a couple really bad days. I've exposed a few of my weaknesses that I was doing without even thinking. I appreciate this video and think this will greatly help myself and other aspiring traders.
@@haywood0457 if you have Windows just hold the windows key+ G and you'll see a taskbar that allows you to record. Then afterwards allows you to save it to a file and you can view/edit from there.
Excellent clip for trading and life. I got Ericsson's book a decade or so ago. "Deliberate practice...." Great insight. High productivity work and exercises. A friend of mine did a podcast with Dr. Ericsson back then. Great thinking to apply to trading Lance. Good stuff n thanks very much. Appreciate it. Kirby ps. Ill have a look at the other book n incorporate these things into intraday trading. Mike n SMB does a great job of reinforcing best practices.
One thing I like about ThinkorSwim is the OnDemand feature. You can go back and watch/paper-trade any day back to 2009 or '10 using the historical data. Great for practice, back-testing, or "re-trading" something you screwed up (I would sometimes do a trade review, note what I could've done better, and then re-trade it the way I should have for the muscle/brain memory)...As always, thanks for the video.
@@whatusayingangsta3642 actually you can with TD direct investing, I personally opened with them about couple months ago. However you do need $25k min. to maintain cash balance. Hurry before they take it off.
Thank you very much Lance and SMB. Great content! I will definitly add this training to my routine and the books to my next and next next on my reading list. David.
This video is absolutely amazing. It lets me know I’m on the right track. As of lately I’ve yet to see the success I’ve envisioned over my trading journey.. boiling down everything to the basics and learning how to learn or as you call it meta learning thanks for the vid and reassurance
I love the validation this video provides. I already do several of the tips Lance recommends but the advice to start cutting clips of tape and archiving them is awesome tip.
That was great...I am a believer that repetition helps to see things live as trades unfold. I will constantly takes notes on trades to keep on file and refer to at a later date...helps to stick to the plan at times of drawdown. Replaying trades is a great idea and would help with cementing key setups. Thanks for the great vid
Exceptionally dense and to the point. As almost non trader but wanting to make one or two trades a week I have only little material for self video. A bank of trades would be most especially valuable down to the mechanics sped up: entry, stop, target trade evolution for swing, scalp. Also for nondirectional option butterfly, condor and so on. Not just foundational educational but actual trade placement. Boring? No, especially if variable speed and lots of examples. Already available somewhere? Thanks SMB.
I actually started recording my trading just recently. I just happen to come across this video right after and definitely agree it's helped a lot. I got the idea from one of Bella's articles. Great stuff 👍 Thank You
I appreciate your wisdom and insight Lance. There's alot to learn from this video especially about those little nuances and see it moments in trading. Also made me feel better regarding my approach to my options trading and the time I spent paper trading everyday for 8 months before going live. I was getting my reps in lol. Hope u hang around SMB awhile and get some more informative videos out, nice work!
Thanks alot.this will at least show everyone that the learning curve is real and they should reduce expectations at their early beginning and put the in to work. Thanks SMB
Thanks for keeping this real about having to put in the time and applying intentional practice to improve. I have Peak on audiobook and I refer back to it often, along with Mike Bellafiore's audiobook One Good Trade. Both of these literary works have all the nuggets you need to improve your trading if you're willing to take the time and implement the ideas being shared.
My sticking point has always been patience. I see the correct play, confirm it with technical analysis, set my stops/entry and still...STILL, I’m looking for the “earliest” possible entry; only to regret the inevitable pull-back and self-induced panic due to draw down. In short, I agree with everything said in this video. For those of us who are less than patient, the crux of the message is LEARN MARKET STRUCTURE AND HOW PRICE BEHAVES WITHIN THOSE PATTERNS. Me: since my visual memory is freakishly acute, I take notes. I verbally repeat the notes to break the psychological “noise”. It works but consistency, for me, is key. Final key: if it works (and it will) copy, paste, repeat. Sound Repetition equals Perfect Mechanics. Perfect Mechanics equals Perfect Execution. Think anyone “best in the world” who’s an athlete...the imagery of a baseball pitcher works best for me. Thanks for the vid. I look forward to the next.
Excellent video on the learning process; Would be good to hear from some professional traders on their "breakthrough moments" in their own learning process/journey
I use Sierra Charts playback feature. They have a simulated trading mode I use on playbacks, so you do everything you would do on live trades and the fills are pretty accurate in sim mode. The program is cheap about $35 a month but has a bit of a learning curve.
Man this is gold. I’m want to learn to read the tape.I need to figure out a good way to replay live market data and record it. Then organize those videos into categories based on setups. OBS maybe for recording and TOS for the replays? Anyone know a good way to do this?
This is a video we will be working on. Some traders here like to use OBS to stream a select portion of their screen to their own youtube account which will then auto archive the day for them.
